Worlds Of Gods And Goddesses - Saturn, Alexandra Aldecoa

College of Arts and Sciences Presentations

Each team member created a planet poster based on the concept that humans use both science and religion to explain the unexplainable. Each of the planets has a mythological background, usually Greek, which is related to the planets and the name of its moons. These posters had both physical and digital aspects to them. The typography used for each poster is related to statistics and facts about that planet. Video and audio related to the still images are visible using an augmented reality application. Situationism, Honesty, And The Folk, Drew Lindgren, Jared Talley, Travis Bundy, Lauren Stevens, Kim Hayes, Kyle Brasil, Sara Couture, Amanda Lynch

College of Arts and Sciences Presentations

This project aims at finding a widespread folk theory of honesty in order to construct an accurate account of the philosophical nature of honesty as a character trait. Our research process involves gathering responses from the folk, then combining and interpreting the responses. Our broad goal is to discover a solid case for the existence of character traits that can be used against the recent situationist attacks being seen in psychology. Proponents of situationism reject the existence of broad character traits, arguing that behaviour is driven by situational factors and that humans posess no significant character traits at all (Harmon, …

The Korean War In The 1960s And 1970s: A Cultural Analysis Of The First Six Seasons Of M*A*S*H, Leah Tams Apr 2014

The Korean War In The 1960s And 1970s: A Cultural Analysis Of The First Six Seasons Of M*A*S*H, Leah Tams

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

This paper studies the first six seasons of the hit television show M*A*S*H (1972-1983) and examines how the sociocultural climate of the 1960s and 1970s in America influenced the show's portrayal of the Korean War and how, in turn, the show reflects those cultural influences. This study focuses on the influence of the Vietnam War, the civil rights movement, the Cold War, second-wave feminism, and the gay and sexual liberation movements. It argues that each of these movements and events had a profound influence upon M*A*S*H, which is evident in its portrayal of the Korean War as a conflict infused …

Japanese American internment in the United States during World War II affected thousands of lives for generations yet it remains hidden in historical memory. The study of Japanese American internment provides a historical catalyst for research and introspection about democracy, citizenship, and constitutional rights in the hope that by understanding the past a dialogue can be established to prevent a recurrence.

Senses In Synthesis: Imaginative Sensing In The 19th Century, Jesse Hernandez Apr 2014

Senses In Synthesis: Imaginative Sensing In The 19th Century, Jesse Hernandez

Theses and Dissertations

During the late 19th century, arts and literature had a surge of sensory awareness, made manifest through sensory analogy, intersensory metaphor, and synaesthesia. This dissertation explores this phenomenon through a study of five poets and artists: Charles Baudelaire, Arthur Rimbaud, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Barlas, and Julia Margaret Cameron. Using imaginative sensing, these artists transformed the relationship between artist and observer, assigning greater responsibility to their audience while simultaneously asserting artistic control of their work. Their fascination with sensory mixing and multisensory awareness demonstrates unique ideas about perception and embodiment, ideas that have sparked both controversy and imitation. I begin …

Wmu Career And Student Employment Services – Present Practices And Future Recommendations For Employer Relations, Amanda Jeppesen

Honors Theses

Career services offices currently find themselves in a rapidly changing environment. Due to economic hardship, students and employers are expecting more effective and fruitful engagement, and offices must create innovative solutions to provide such engagement on shrinking budgets. Career services staff charged with conducting employer relations activities are charged with brokering these relationships between employers, students, faculty and staff, and the offerings of their departments. The purpose of this study is to determine current practices for the career services offices at Western Michigan University, Oakland University, and Central Michigan University. Then, best practices identified by industry experts will be explored …

Comparing Gains In German Vowel Production Across Three Learning Environments, Anna Katharina Burton, Dr. Laura C. Smith Apr 2014

Comparing Gains In German Vowel Production Across Three Learning Environments, Anna Katharina Burton, Dr. Laura C. Smith

Journal of Undergraduate Research

This study sought to compare pronunciation gains in German in three learning environments, focusing especially on the umlauted vowels, e.g., /ø:/ as in Schönheit ‘beauty’ and /y:/ as in üben ‘to practice.’ Our research aimed to answer the following questions: 1. In which learning environment do students make more improvement in vowel production during an 11-week period: on a Berlin Study Abroad (SA), living in the German House, or while taking German classes? And 2. To what extent do problems with production of umlauted vowels impact the way native speakers rate the pronunciation of learners’ vowels?

Likewise Folio: A New Journal Of Contemporary American Poetry, Kylan Rice, Conner Bassett, Dr. Susan Howe

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In a socially mediated age marked by competing identity politics, fractured and proliferating interests, and streamlined global connectivity, networking and community-building have become invaluable components of any venture /career goal. This is as true for lawyers or politicians as it is for poets and artists. The old adage, “it’s who you know,” is continuously validated and proven in job markets, in graduate schools, and in other sectors of the career-oriented world. To this end, Conner Bassett and I have used the funding provided us by an ORCA grant not only to expand the reach of our small online poetry journal, …

Progressive Vowel Nasalization In Brazilian Portuguese, N. Douglas Porter, Dr. Willis Fails

Journal of Undergraduate Research

This study examines the nature of nasalized vowels in Brazilian Portuguese and specifically looks at data regarding progressive nasalization, which occurs when a nasal consonant (like /m/ or /n/) affects how nasal the vowel is that follows it (as in the word mito or minto).

Building The Unsinkable Understanding: Margaret ‘Molly’ Brown And Her Legacy Through Architecture, Adam Lloyd, Dr. Kerry Soper

Journal of Undergraduate Research

On a visit to Denver, Colorado in November 2011, my girlfriend requested that we visit the Molly Brown House Museum as she had grown up watching the musical The Unsinkable Molly Brown. As we toured the museum, the architecture and interior design of the house caught my attention as it reminded me of the Gilded Age cottages in New England that I had learned about in my American Humanities class. My project was originally intended to explore the Gilded Age homes of Mining Age Colorado but, as I visited Denver in the summer of 2013, I was intrigued by the …

Putting The Muse To Music: German Composers And Elisa Von Der Recke, Aubrey Hatch, Dr. Michelle James, Cindy Brewer Apr 2014

Putting The Muse To Music: German Composers And Elisa Von Der Recke, Aubrey Hatch, Dr. Michelle James, Cindy Brewer

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Some artists create music directly, while other artists—like Elisa von der Recke—inspire others to create music. Elisa von der Recke was a literary phenomenon in her era, a woman whose writing was taken seriously by male readers, thinkers, and, very importantly, by male composers. At the height of her popularity and shortly after her death, several of Germany’s best composers put Recke’s poetry to music. Unfortunately, for all of their popularity during the German Romantic period, Recke’s poems—as well as their musical accompaniments—have all but disappeared1. The purpose of this project was to both compile and transcribe music that was …

Motherhood, Mary E. Shirley Apr 2014

Motherhood, Mary E. Shirley

Manuscripts

As she lay in the midst of dirt and squalor she seemed in utter oblivion. To her the cobwebby walls, the cockroaches, the plush chair with springs uncovered, and the filthy blanket were unimportant, because for once in her life, the young colored girl had captured the spotlight. She was the center of interest in that room; of secondary interest was the baby - her baby - in the next room.

Winter, Ardath Weigler Apr 2014

Winter, Ardath Weigler

Manuscripts

Faint, uncertain fluorescence of day struggling to penetrate the murk of man-made atmosphere - pushing through the exhalation of factory and furnace, making silhouette background for life. An occasional, broken shuffle of steps along the gritty alleyways as a solitary devotee gropes his path to the six o'clock mass. Lining the street - drab frame houses point a picket finger of mediocrity. Unrelieved monotony of mansard roofs jagging against the dun-colored sky, holding the saturated weight above.

About Defeat, Jean Ebeling

Manuscripts

There they lay, slung back in a corner, discarded from any future use, and looking as if every ounce of strength and good will had been wrung from their very soles. Only a few months before, that old pair of shoes could have held up its laces and thrown back its tongue, unshamefully encountering any other pair of shoes-even those of the higher priced class.

Libya, Virginia Hurt Apr 2014

Libya, Virginia Hurt

Manuscripts

As far as one could see stretched the shimmering sands of the Sahara. The fury of the day seemed to beat upon the earth and the burning glare of the desert set weaving heat-waves into motion above the shifting hillocks, which the scorching wind swept into being and inevitably demolished with its swaying motion.

A Penny For Your Thoughts, Alfonse Tapia Apr 2014

A Penny For Your Thoughts, Alfonse Tapia

Manuscripts

"A Penny for your thoughts."
What could I answer, when, in reality, I had been thinking of absolutely nothing. I was just looking at nature; nature who has always done something to me. I cannot put my finger on it, but I can feel it vaguely with a certain weakness that causes a disengagement from the powers of description. As mysterious as night itself; like the flame glowing in the fireplace, or the tobacco smoke, lazily drifting along to nowhere. It is in that way that I watch the always vanishing 'something' that is forever there in nature.

Appreciation, Betty F. Thome

Manuscripts

My father is sitting at the breakfast
table, his left hand raises by degrees a cup
of coffee to his lips, his right hand firmly
grips the most important part of his morning
meal-the newspaper. Suddenly, the
left hand goes sharply down, making the
china cup click as it hits the saucer, the
sports' page is enlightening this morning.
"By God, Galento's going to try it
again! Tonight at 8: 30!" My father issues
this announcement as fervently as a revival
preacher heralds the end of the World.
"Who is Galento?" says my mother
very innocently from her side of …

This Thing Called Love, Jim Mitchell Apr 2014

This Thing Called Love, Jim Mitchell

Manuscripts

"What is this thing called Io-o-ove?" wails the radio crooner in his agonized search for the "sweet mystery of life." All over the country, dowagers and damsels alike sigh and shed a tear of pity; and "the poor fellow" is voted to a high place among the ranking stars of radio. As his popularity increases, his paycheck grows about in proportion to the square of his "public," and life becomes a song for the crooner with the "catch" in his voice. What is the first thing our poor love-starved hero does upon landing a spot on a coast-to- coast network? …

Struggles In Slang, Jean M. Chalifour Apr 2014

Struggles In Slang, Jean M. Chalifour

Manuscripts

"Slang!! Our children do not use
slang," emphatically pronounced the Head
English Mistress in the G. S. C. School for
Girls, somewhere in England. Now, in
spite of an extremely exaggerated Oxford
accent which usually practically defied the
American Exchange Teacher's powers of
translation, the meaning of this statement
was crystal clear and raised a healthy
resentment in the American's heart. Had
not the A. E. T. heard much slang at the
"digs" among the "diggers" who were well
educated, teachers and bank "clarks?"
When the A. E. T. suggested this to the
H. E. M., she was informed that …
