A Den Of Thieves, Robert F. Gelberg
A Den Of Thieves, Robert F. Gelberg
English Honors Projects
A Den of Thieves is a three-act play detailing the final three days of Jesus of Nazareth from the point of view of the two "thieves" with whom he was crucified. However, rather than a retelling of the Gospels, A Den of Thieves approaches the story through a historical lens, presenting a portrait of Jesus as a Jewish revolutionary leading a populist rebellion against Rome for which he was ultimately publicly executed for sedition. The play offers an examination of both faith and the foundations upon which we build faith.
Radio Waves, Will Davis
Radio Waves, Will Davis
Master of Humanities Capstone Projects
Radio Waves is a service-‐learning project that uses the Broadway tour of Memphis as a starting point to explore the rise of race music on American radio stations in the 1950s, and its influence on rock and roll, rhythm and blues, and ultimately, the civil rights movement, in Dayton, Ohio. Radio Waves researches and explores this particularly rich period of broadcasting history by combining the talents and expertise of artists, musicians, disc jockeys, historians, and local high school students. Master of Humanities student Will Davis acted as both producer and instructor to the students and team led them through the …
Child As Other: The Crisis Of Representing Childhood, Cynthia Henebry
Child As Other: The Crisis Of Representing Childhood, Cynthia Henebry
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores my own work in the context of historical and contemporary representations of children. Because the child’s experience is essentially unknowable to the adult, issues of control that are always at play between photographer and subject are highlighted when an adult is the photographer and a child is the subject. This is evident when we examine and compare the photographs of children that have so far existed as well as the contexts in which they were made. While I believe that complete resolution of these issues is all but impossible, my work and research is motivated by a …
Anti-Heroics, Modesty, And Bad Taste, Philip Hinge
Anti-Heroics, Modesty, And Bad Taste, Philip Hinge
Theses and Dissertations
My thesis work revolves around investigating painting’s relationship with “bad taste” and heroism. By comparing my paintings to illustrative depictions of “heroism”, artists who turn bad art good, ideas concerning modesty, humor, and invention I will contextualize my stance towards “heroism” and bad taste. By establishing my relationship to the aforementioned examples I will trace the growth of my work over the past few years and discuss how its role within contemporary painting has changed as well as how it interacts with various cultural references.

Toward A Deweyan Theory Of Ethical And Aesthetic Performing Arts Practice, Aili W. Bresnahan
Toward A Deweyan Theory Of Ethical And Aesthetic Performing Arts Practice, Aili W. Bresnahan
Philosophy Faculty Publications
This paper formulates a Deweyan theory of performing arts practice that relies for its support on two main things:
- The unity Dewey ascribed to all intelligent practices (including artistic practice) and
- The observation that many aspects of the work of performing artists of Dewey’s time include features (“dramatic rehearsal,” action, interaction and habit development) that are part of Dewey’s characterization of the moral life.
This does not deny the deep import that Dewey ascribed to aesthetic experience (both in art and in life), but it does suggest that we might use his theory of ethical practice in conjunction with his …
Accounts Of Settler Colonialism: A Comparative Study Of The Dakota & Palestinians’ Plight, Baligh Ben Taleb
Accounts Of Settler Colonialism: A Comparative Study Of The Dakota & Palestinians’ Plight, Baligh Ben Taleb
Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Over the course of the nineteenth century, American settlers spread throughout the Western frontier, driving out indigenous populations to establish unique and permanent homelands of their own. In doing so, they caused the death and displacement of thousands of Plains Indians, including the Dakota people in the young state of Minnesota in 1862. Indeed, the US-Dakota War represented a salient instance of settler colonial expansion on the frontier, triggering a bloody conflict between the Dakota Sioux and American military expeditions led by Henry H. Sibley. This paper attempts to contextualize this war within the broader framework of settler colonialism and …

From Carnivals To Red Light Districts: Mexican Gender Norms And Sex Trafficking, Kate Heath
From Carnivals To Red Light Districts: Mexican Gender Norms And Sex Trafficking, Kate Heath
Faculty Curated Undergraduate Works
This paper explores how traditional Mexican gender norms greatly facilitate sex trafficking on the U.S.-Mexico border because of the normalization of violence. In turn, an acceptance of such violence facilitates manipulative practices as related to deception, psychical violence, and psychological manipulation associated with marianismo and machismo. Machismo enables traffickers to use violence against women, threaten their families and children, deceive them with ideas of romance and opportunities abroad, and exploit the benefits of patriarchy and female vulnerability. Meanwhile, marianismo enables trafficking when considering the manipulation of women’s toleration of violence, their strong connections to their families, their limited opportunities for …
Estill Voice Training: The Key To Holistic Voice And Speech Training For The Actor, Katharine Salsbury
Estill Voice Training: The Key To Holistic Voice And Speech Training For The Actor, Katharine Salsbury
Theses and Dissertations
The aim of this paper is to examine the Estill Voice Training System to explain how it may be used in tandem with widely accepted voice and speech methodologies such as those developed by Kristin Linklater, Patsy Rodenburg and Dudley Knight/Phil Thompson in order produce versatile performers able to meet the vocal gauntlet flung at the feet of the contemporary actor. Students must be able to effectively function as voice-over talent, sing musical theatre, rattle off classical text with aplomb and work in film, all with superior vocal health. Synthesizing proven techniques with the skills presented in the inter-disciplinary Estill …
The Devil Can’T Find You If You Hum: Post-Environmental Conductivity, Thomas Burkett
The Devil Can’T Find You If You Hum: Post-Environmental Conductivity, Thomas Burkett
Theses and Dissertations
What would a repositioned concept of environmentalism look like, one that is specifically determined by the geography and the human rights at stake within the environmental politics of a place? I am interested in determining how performative engagements act as an art form that counters dispossessing industrial, political and environmental regimes. Within this discussion of environmental dispossession I will discuss ways I have used drawing as a conceptual space to explore resistance, redefine cultural capital and challenge archeological structures of knowledge, through my presence and protest.
Waveform Analogy, Experimentation, And Optimism, Aaron Storck
Waveform Analogy, Experimentation, And Optimism, Aaron Storck
Theses and Dissertations
This paper offers a contextualization of my art practice, within particular trends in contemporary art and its discourse. It traces an expressed interest in networked objects, and the indeterminacy of meaning in art; from researched examples and texts, through specific expressions of these ideas in my thesis art exhibition. The paper then outlines key areas of practical interest to the experimental viability of my art practice. The paper goes on to explore the relationships between indeterminacy, experimentation, and creativity in the arts; within the context of an original thought experiment that draws an analogy between topics in physics and the …

Untitled, Michael Hunter
Theses and Dissertations
The following is an exploration of ideas and themes related to my studio work, past and present, concrete and aspirational. I approach painting as an experience of pleasure and as a mode of resistance and critique. I will discuss how my work is aligned with many of the themes found in the Pattern and Decoration movement of the 1970s. I will also identify alliances that my work has with DIY, networks, and the contemporary art scene as discussed in Lane Relyea’s "Your Everyday Art World". I describe my mode of working in the context of "workable resistance," which Jan Verwoert …

I Like To Meet People, Betty A. Hodson
I Like To Meet People, Betty A. Hodson
Manuscripts
I like to meet people of all kinds - old or young, famous or unknown, well-educated or illiterate, brilliant or stupid, good or bad, Negro or Chinese, foreign or American. They are all needed to make up this world in which we live, so why not get to know them? One can enjoy living much better if he knows those with whom he associates. There are so many interesting people to meet that I know I shall never tire of meeting them.
How To Amuse A Younger Sister, Don Griffin
How To Amuse A Younger Sister, Don Griffin
Manuscripts
Amusement for a younger sister depends upon her age. Suppose she is just ten months. There's not much to do for her when she cries except carry her about the house and change her diaper. But that isn't very amusing.
A few months later she will be delighted to yank on your hair, poke your eyes, or grab for your spectacles.
When she begins to walk, she will find many things to be amused with around the house. There will probably be broken lamps, torn clothing and paper, and many things damaged. You will not be required to do more …
Heaven, Hell, Or Earth, Mary E. Donnell
Heaven, Hell, Or Earth, Mary E. Donnell
Manuscripts
Since my first days in the Cradle Roll Department of Sunday School, the merits of the bad place against the good place have been impounded upon my mind. In my childish fancy heaven represented a place where everyone wore water wings, balanced embroidery hoops on their heads, and sat all day on cloud tufts eating water melons. This connotation was no doubt derived from the picture Green Pastures. One of my first thoughts about heaven was that it would be very boring with everyone so good. I" had never heard of night in heaven and wondered if the angels …
Evening At Juniper Knoll, Lois J. Shipley
Evening At Juniper Knoll, Lois J. Shipley

Oh, the glory of it all! The sun was a magnificant ball of flame as it descended low in the heavens. Small fluffy clouds of gold floated around the huge flaming ball, but kept their distance as though there was some fear of it. Occasionally, a graceful swallow Hew across, lending his profile to the glory of the heavens, and the cry of night birds as they took to flight gave the woods that necessary note of evening time. As I strolled through the woods, the sticks crackled beneath my feet and one little squirrel in the tree top took …
The Three Most Quiet Things I Ever Knew, Dick Runnels
The Three Most Quiet Things I Ever Knew, Dick Runnels
Manuscripts
In these turbulent, noisy days, I sometimes like to stop and think of the peaceful, the quiet things in my life. As a child, I suppose the most quiet things I knew were the great, silent hills of our farm. How often have I romped and scurried over/ these hills, independent of all restraint'! Or how often have I wandered aimlessly through their protecting shadows while pondering my boyish problems? Always their vast silence offered no opposition to my mood, Like friendly old men, they sat about watching me grow, sometimes smiling, sometimes frowning, but always quietly understanding.
Three Silent Things, Ann Holloway
Three Silent Things, Ann Holloway
Manuscripts
Things that cause the eardrum to vibrate are relatively unimportant in the Universe. Nature's thunder, the boom of the cannon on the battlefield, or man-made machinery in operation create sound, but the very fact that they do so has no bearing on their significance in the world. Trees, wind, stupendous buildings, books, music, and art possess audibility or visibility, but these objects and elements in themselves are meaningless. The silent, intangible factors that allow the trees to exist, the wind to blow, or the artist to paint are the foundations on which the plan of creation is laid.

Always, wherever I am, when I smell wood smoke, a blanket of color waves before my eyes. I can taste the crisp, juicy apples bought at a crude roadside stand and sold by a toothless 'hill-billy' and his apron clad wife or tousled-headed children. I see the brilliant orange of bittersweet clinging to the fence posts, and I can see each article in the antique shops - especially the spinning wheel and trundle bed and the corn-cob dolls with their hooped-skirts. I see fields of corn stripped of their harvest, standing tiredly, waiting, bearing no resemblance to the proud tall-tassled …
Infant Climbs A Mountain, Peggy O'Donnell
Infant Climbs A Mountain, Peggy O'Donnell
Manuscripts
Ever since they'd left New England behind to come west, Infant had been excited; there had been so many things to see, all new and different. At first she had thought that Indiana would be like it was in her first grade reader; that they'd live in a log cabin, that she'd wear a coonskin cap and deerskin breeches just like Dan'l Boone, (only smaller, because Infant was only six) and that there would be real live Indians with tomahawks. Mother had explained that that had been a long time ago, and that Indiana now was just like New England. …
Peace Through Prayer, W. S. Mclean
Peace Through Prayer, W. S. Mclean
Manuscripts
As far back as he could remember he had been afraid of storms. Back there in the early years, some member of the family had set the pace of fear when a storm came. There was an old belief - probably a superstition - that if one sat on a feather bed, lightning wouldn't strike. Anyway, there was a general migration to the bedrooms during a storm. Mother became nervous if the storm was severe, and sister would have a fit of trembling. Brother made a vain show of bravery, which only intensified the uneasiness. All through his seventeen years …

Solliloquy, Doris Daley

The northern day was drawing to a close, and as I watched the sun slide down behind multi-colored clouds, its satellite rays trailing after, it seemed that with it went something of the human quality of this earth, leaving me alone in the presence of the unknown.
Standing topside in the prow, I could look down and watch the slender ship cut the never-ending swells. On either side, the smooth hull sent the backwash sliding along its sides, crested with foam at first, and gradually spiralling out into shining ripples amidships, all the while roaring like a hungry beast. But …
