The Choral Embodiment Of Oedipus: Sacramental Performance In Oedipus At Colonus And Gospel At Colonus, Thomas William Biegler
The Choral Embodiment Of Oedipus: Sacramental Performance In Oedipus At Colonus And Gospel At Colonus, Thomas William Biegler
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
In researching the original performances of Sophocles’s Oedipus at Colonus, contemporary composer Lee Breuer concluded that Ancient Greek productions were “close to rock concerts” full with “responses from the audience like choral or choir responses in the church.” What Breuer recognized was that Sophoclean performances were lively and engaging to their audiences, inviting them to participate and help tell the story being dramatized on stage. What he also recognized was the sacramental power of performance in Ancient Greek tragedies, when a spirit is gifted from performer to viewer. This spirit is passed through the rhythm and meter of the language, …
Implicit Prejudice And Its Implications For How Communities Should Respond To Racial Injustices, Harry Kainen
Implicit Prejudice And Its Implications For How Communities Should Respond To Racial Injustices, Harry Kainen
Undergraduate Theses—Unrestricted
In the spring of 2013, a racially controversial incident occurred on the Washington University Campus. The incident raised questions about the racial tolerance of the university community as well as exactly who should be held responsible for the injustice. Most importantly, the community’s response to the incident exemplified how a community with the potential for substantial collective action can fail to mobilize and improve when they are called upon to do so. This paper examines recent psychological research that studies the existence of subconscious racial prejudices in order to examine its implications in community responses to racial injustices. Results show …

Too Far From Mecca, Too Close To Peking: The Ethnic Violence And The Making Of Chinese Muslim Identity, 1821-1871, Jingyuan Qian
History Honors Projects
This article examines the ethnic conflicts during the 19th century in Yunnan, China. Between 1821 and 1871 a series of ethnic riots took place between the dominant Han Chinese and the Hui, a Muslim ethnic group in Yunnan. This article attempts to explain how the Hui’s blended identity as both Chinese and Mulims caused the two ethnic group’s misconceptions of each other, and how these misconceptions were reinforced by the nation-building efforts of Imperial China. This project also sheds lights on the contemporary ethnic relationship on China’s western frontier.

The Social Integration Of Civil War Veterans With Hearing Loss: The Roles Of Government And Media, Corinna S. Hill
The Social Integration Of Civil War Veterans With Hearing Loss: The Roles Of Government And Media, Corinna S. Hill
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
The end of the Civil War at 1865 came with a staggering cost of 625,000 lives and a sizable number of deafened veterans. The deafened veterans who left the war faced a unique dilemma with their disability, hearing loss. The path to proving their disability and obtaining benefits would prove arduous. Before the Civil War, disability was considered less. After the war wrought its damage, disability was seen as free-riders. The morphing of the disability stigma can be attributed to the reactions from the government and media. The well-intentioned federal government's policies and resources for disabled veterans in the years …

Packaged Little Lives, Corbin R. Covher
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This document attempts to capture the main ideas and evolution of my art making process during the three years of graduate studies at the University of New Orleans. My art making practice is an ever-evolving exploration of materials and ideas. Through art processes and experimentations I am able to overcome negative feelings about my role in society. I get lost in my process making things, thinking about things, and trying to come up with new ideas for the world. I am attempting to heighten mundane materials like cardboard, crayons, foams and concrete with intuitive abstract shape making. I am trying …

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Perception greatly affects the way we experience and understand the world. Using self-reflective research processes and data collection, I explore how art can subjectively re-present data and what this means for research and knowledge. The artworks through which I discuss these notions are Self Checkout 2013, Bibliography of Virtual Consciousness: Uniform Resource Locator Volumes 1-12 (BOVC:URL 1-12), and Observation Box. Self Checkout 2013 is composed of all of my receipts from 2013. They not only record my transactions, but also re-present data from which one can make inferences regarding my life—my consumer identity, my needs, my …
Suppressing My Inner Caravaggio, Nathan A. Childs
Suppressing My Inner Caravaggio, Nathan A. Childs
Graduate School of Art Theses
FULK ART is a body of work that stems out of the divisions and segments of the constructed narrative germane to the notions of "art world" and "art worlds". In his theses Nathan Childs argues that his contemporary studio practice is not rooted in the post production criticism of his objects. Rather his art is a "techne" that hybridizes his daily habits as rituals of making. These rituals are self reverent inspections of multi sided issues, set into a dynamic state. The "third side" of the coin device is a habit of life style that allows Childs to reach deeper …

The Transcript was first published in 1917 by the classes of Chicago-Kent College of Law. The first edition notes that the idea for “a year book and chronicle of the College” was conceived in the fall of 1916 by the senior class, upon which a committee of members from each class were appointed to undertake the project. Editions followed for each year except 1921 until 1929, when the final edition of The Transcript was published.
Issues of The Transcript contain faculty photos and background information, photos of senior, junior, and freshman classes, lists of post-graduate class members, an Organizations section …

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History
In the study of the Civil War, the violence between brothers, neighbors, and countrymen is most frequently explored through the eyes of great armies clashing on the field of battle. But in the American Civil War, as in any modern conflict and especially those dividing a people amongst themselves, a citizen did not have to wear blue or grey to feel passionately about the war. In Baltimore, Mayor George William Brown and paper merchant Samuel Epes Turner, took strikingly different stances on the war despite their geographical proximity to the fighting. Fort Sumter may have seen the first shots of …

Graphic Designers And Brain Surgeons, Both Highly Trained, Yet Not Interchangeable: The Creation Of Promotion Materials For Springfest 2014, Alanna Mehrtens
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Graphic design and brain surgery. What do they have in common? Each person is trained in their profession. Each person is called upon for services that are needed for a specific reason. Common sense tells you to not perform brain surgery without the proper training. Why would that be any different for Graphic Design? Whereas most people would never attempt brain surgery, the average person seems more than willing to attempt creating Graphic Design, usually with poor results. Event branding is an example of where training in this profession is most beneficial. I was the Graphic Designer in charge of …

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public
The article in the Adams Sentinel May 17th, 1863 was innocent enough.
David McConaughy, prominent local lawyer, moderate Republican and progenitor of the Gettysburg Battlefield Memorial Association was passing along a simple request. "I am very anxious to have a collection of trophies and interesting relics from the Battle-field of Gettysburg," Margaretta Meade wrote to McConaughy. The famed General's wife was appealing to Gettysburg to create one of the central attractions for the Great Central Sanitary Fair in Philadelphia that summer. [excerpt]
Identities And Inbetweens: The Vietnamese And Assimilation Strategies In Germany, Andrew C. Downs
Identities And Inbetweens: The Vietnamese And Assimilation Strategies In Germany, Andrew C. Downs
Honors College Theses
Multiculturalism has met with opposition in Germany as many of its native citizens have expressed their dissatisfaction with the country’s immigrant population. The problem, however, really lies in the system of integration utilized by Germany. The German government claims multiculturalism has failed, yet the integration approach the country utilizes is actually somewhere between multiculturalism and assimilation. This research suggests that Germany has not attempted true multiculturalism. The supposed failure of multiculturalism is often blamed on the apparent unwillingness of immigrants to integrate, but Germans are hesitant to accept even the better integrated immigrant groups, such as the Vietnamese. To illustrate …

Review Of Bonnie Latimer, Making Gender, Culture, And The Self In The Fiction Of Samuel Richardson: The Novel Individual, Karen Lipsedge
Review Of Bonnie Latimer, Making Gender, Culture, And The Self In The Fiction Of Samuel Richardson: The Novel Individual, Karen Lipsedge
ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830
Latimer’s Making Gender, Culture, and the Self in the Fiction of Samuel Richardson answers a need in eighteenth-century Richardsonian studies. It is also a thoughtful and long overdue study, which deserves praise and attention. Latimer provides the reader with a greater understanding of the notion of female individuality in Richardson’s novels, and also of eighteenth-century culture and contemporary literature. Her research is gratifying in its level of detail, and she is deft in showing correspondences between eighteenth-century culture, fiction and Richardson’s novels. Although Sir Charles Grandison lies at the heart of this study, Latimer is equally skilful in devoting attention …

You’Re An Austen Heroine! Engaging Students With Past And Present, Caroline Breashears
ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830
In my senior seminar on Jane Austen, I seek to engage students in multiple ways. On one hand, I want them to connect with Austen’s world and to reflect on what it means to them; on the other hand, I want them to understand the very real differences of that world and how they inform her novels. One strategy for engaging students in these ways is through interactive games. Studies have shown that many modern games have features similar to those stressed by engaged learning, so game design can be adapted for pedagogical purposes. I discuss the purposes, design, and …
Teaching Willmore, James Evans
Teaching Willmore, James Evans
ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830
Teaching Aphra Behn’s The Rover for nearly four decades, I have witnessed a considerable shift in students’ attitudes toward the play, especially toward Willmore. More positive about his character in the 1970s and 1980s, they have had a much more negative assessment since then. The only available video version, the Women’s Theatre Trust production, compounds my pedagogical problem through filming techniques and choice of actor; emphasizing male violence against women, its interpretation parallels feminist criticism of the 1990s. Asking students to examine theater history may lead them to see that Behn does not completely match this ideological paradigm. The original …
