Baltimore On The Border: The Occupation, Kevin P. Lavery May 2014

Baltimore On The Border: The Occupation, Kevin P. Lavery

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

Though Baltimore and Maryland were preserved for the Union, it was a victory won at gunpoint. Historian Harry Ezratty describes one occasion when Governor Dix, Butler’s successor in the Middle Department, demonstrated “a genuine display of gentlemanly tactfulness” and Victorian cunning when he invited overly influential local ladies to discuss matters of the occupation. According to his memoirs, he then pointed to a gun stationed at Fort McHenry and diplomatically asked his guests where it was directed. They observed that it was pointed to Battle Monument Square: a site of local importance commemorating the War of 1812. He promised them …

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public

A couple weeks ago I got the chance to wave to Ben Franklin and Mark Twain. They waved back from the stage as the curtain dropped. Jess leaned in to me. "I didn't realize that this is what history is to you," she said, with a bit of derision in her voice. I understand my wife's derision. Disney World is not the first place that comes to mind when most people think of powerful and meaningful history. But for me, it is where I began to find the magic in history. [excerpt]

The Specific Object, Jared Lindsay Clark, Brian Christensen May 2014

The Specific Object, Jared Lindsay Clark, Brian Christensen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

“The history of painting may be characterized in terms of the gradual withdrawal of painting from the task of representing reality – or of reality from the power of painting to represent it – in favor of an increasing preoccupation with problems intrinsic to painting itself…painting and sculpture became free to pursue concerns intrinsic to themselves.”

Deaf Sex Education In India: A Study Of Deaf Indians In The U.S., Lisa Marijn Van Der Mark

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a serious issue in India, as the United Nations AIDS (UNAIDS) in 2008 reported that approximately 2.5 million Indians are living with HIV (p. 1). Because of this, some degree of sex education has been initiated in state schools in India. Since no research exists on whether deaf people in India are receiving this education, the research questions related to the focus of this study on factors of sex education for the deaf in India include: What is the level of awareness and knowledge about sexually transmitted infections (STIs), safe sex …

Ergonomically Designing Art Objects, Ambika Subramaniam May 2014

Ergonomically Designing Art Objects, Ambika Subramaniam

Undergraduate Theses—Unrestricted

The following thesis examines the work of Ambika Subramaniam, in particular her thesis installation Ergonomically Designing Art Objects, for the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture at Washington University in St. Louis. Based within a discussion of semiotics, the thesis researches furniture signification and tracks its evolution through traditional form, ergonomic function, and consumed product. Major points include the ways in which objects are capable of collapsing and retaining the semiotic divide between a sign and referent, and how that signification relates to contemporary design-oriented products. Using the chair as the exemplifying object, the thesis installation questions how objects have …

Apple Of Discord: The "Hungarian Factor" In Austro-Serbian Relations, 1867-1881, Ian D. Armour May 2014

Apple Of Discord: The "Hungarian Factor" In Austro-Serbian Relations, 1867-1881, Ian D. Armour

Central European Studies

When seeking the origins of World War I, the chain of events in the late nineteenth century that led to the breakdown of relations between Austria-Hungary and Serbia and facilitated the rise of an aggressive Serbian nationalism needs to be understood. This book focuses on the hitherto unexplored Hungarian influence on the Habsburg Monarchy's policy toward Serbia after the 1867 Ausgleich, and it argues that this early period was critical in shaping policy after 1871, down to the imposition on Serbia in 1881 of a system of economic and political control. The Ausgleich, the Austro-Hungarian compromise that reconstituted the Empire as …

Genre Fusion: A New Approach To History, Fiction, And Memory In Contemporary Spain, Sara J. Brenneis May 2014

Genre Fusion: A New Approach To History, Fiction, And Memory In Contemporary Spain, Sara J. Brenneis

Purdue Studies in Romance Literatures

Although the boom in historical fiction and historiography about Spain's recent past has found an eager readership, these texts are rarely studied as two halves of the same story. With Genre Fusion: A New Approach to History, Fiction, and Memory in Contemporary Spain, Sara J. Brenneis argues that fiction and nonfiction written by a single author and focused on the same historical moment deserve to be read side-by-side. By proposing a literary model that examines these genres together, Genre Fusion gives equal importance to fiction and historiography in Spain. In her book, Brenneis develops a new theory of "genre …

Center Stage: Operatic Culture And Nation Building In Nineteenth-Century Central Europe, Philipp Ther May 2014

Center Stage: Operatic Culture And Nation Building In Nineteenth-Century Central Europe, Philipp Ther

Central European Studies

Grand palaces of culture, opera theaters marked the center of European cities like the cathedrals of the Middle Ages. As opera cast its spell, almost every European city and society aspired to have its own opera house, and dozens of new theaters were constructed in the course of the "long" nineteenth century. At the time of the French Revolution in 1789, only a few, mostly royal, opera theaters, existed in Europe. However, by the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries nearly every large town possessed a theater in which operas were performed, especially in Central Europe, the region upon …

Painting And Stuff, Lol, Sopearb Touch May 2014

Painting And Stuff, Lol, Sopearb Touch

Graduate School of Art Theses

Our own human experience is a distinct realm which can never be precisely duplicated in another lifetime. It frames our whole view of existence and, as artists, affects our art making process. The theory of the Tabula Rasa functions as the inspiration of my work and this writing examines my personal view of growing up in the internet age and America, and how my view of life, as well as artistic practice, is shaped by a consumerist culture that has gone global. Additionally, as a figurative painter, I create a context with other artists who create work about their own …

Hot Culture, Cold Halls: Narrating History And Healing At Sites Of Trauma, Emily L. Burde May 2014

Hot Culture, Cold Halls: Narrating History And Healing At Sites Of Trauma, Emily L. Burde

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

With the increased threat of geopolitical violence in the 21st century (bioterrorism, nuclear war, government upheaval, and the like), and at a time when most of the world’s citizens are desensitized to extreme forms of violence, it is necessary for museum professionals to undertake the mission of bringing order out of such chaos to educate the public by creating a tangible truth. By “cooling off” the material remains of a mass trauma through processing, registrars begin a chain of events that ultimately allows curators to establish effective visual narratives of the build-up of tensions, the culmination of the events, …
