Make Art Real, Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute, Virginia Commonwealth University, Dolores Carrington-Hill, M. Teresa Doherty, Alison Jones, Michelle Mcgregor, Mike Porter, W. Scott Street, Patricia White

L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs Publications

The Make Art Real project aims to introduce new audiences to the arts. It supports Theme II of VCU’s Quest for Distinction by promoting and fostering creative expression through innovative collaborations. The project involves displaying existing connections between art and non-art disciplines, as well as making new connections. These unusual pairings are then placed on exhibition through a lunch-time lecture series named “Unexpected_Connections,” which allow faculty, staff, and students to lead and participate in discussions about the reality of art. The lecture series is the first sustainable and reoccurring program to be held in the Depot building, a multidisciplinary facility …

If You Can, You Can, Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute, Virginia Commonwealth University, Amy Chesky, Rima Franklin, Sandra Fritton, Alena Hampton, Demetrius Shambley, Gokhan Yucel

L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs Publications

VCU distinguishes itself as being one of Virginia’s most diverse institutions of higher education. This project seeks to support and extend this wonderful attribute by encouraging a climate of equity and inclusiveness. If You Can, You Can creates a common platform and language in support of the university’s mission to address disparities concerning equality and inclusiveness, and provides a model that is useful in promoting all dimensions of diversity. In addition to developing this overarching model, Team Real Connections worked with the VCU Athletics department to implement a prototype program called “If you can play, you can play,” which promotes …

Math In Motion, Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute, Virginia Commonwealth University, Jose Alcaine, Diana Barden, Lori Floyd-Miller, Blake Maciver, Lea Marshall, Angela Nelson, Thomas Vahdani, Tarynn Witten

L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs Publications

Everything we know about the universe rests on the foundation of mathematics. Somehow, though, the magic of mathematics – the true power of numbers and their beautiful wildness – gets lost in math class. Children, our most magical thinkers, get turned off math in grade school and miss out on a language through which they could learn to read and change the world. VCU Math In Motion will generate a creative, dynamic STEM education initiative within the Richmond community using an innovative curriculum and a customized mobile unit to bring the beauty of math to Richmond region school children in …

A Racial Impact Analysis Of Hb 936: Accessibility Of Electronic Textbooks, Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute, Virginia Commonwealth University, Melanie Avery, Theresa Cry, Linda Haskins, Branden Riley Jan 2014

A Racial Impact Analysis Of Hb 936: Accessibility Of Electronic Textbooks, Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute, Virginia Commonwealth University, Melanie Avery, Theresa Cry, Linda Haskins, Branden Riley

L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs Publications

The economic and social consequences of the lack of access to technology for students in the Commonwealth of Virginia are real and significant. This report provides a legislative racial impact analysis of House Bill (HB) 936, a proposed bill in the Virginia General Assembly, prohibiting school boards from making electronic textbooks available for students, unless the school board adopts a plan to ensure that e-textbooks are available on or before July 1, 2017. The bill focuses solely on developing a plan for installing prior to implementing electronic textbooks in K-12 classrooms. Electronic textbooks are important as they offer updated content, …

A Racial Impact Analysis Of Sb 30: Medicaid Expansion, Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute, Virginia Commonwealth University, Cindy Davis, Robert Irving, Kimberly Pope, Monica Reid Jan 2014

A Racial Impact Analysis Of Sb 30: Medicaid Expansion, Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute, Virginia Commonwealth University, Cindy Davis, Robert Irving, Kimberly Pope, Monica Reid

L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs Publications

Virginia is the second worst state in providing Medicaid to its citizens. The focus of this report is to provide a racial equity impact analysis of Senate Bill (SB) 30, the Senate legislative vehicle for the appropriations of the budget submitted by the Governor of Virginia for fiscal years 2015 and 2016. SB 30 included a provision called “Marketplace Virginia” as an alternative to traditional Medicaid expansion in Virginia. This compromise bill would have covered an estimated 430,000 Virginians who fall in the Medicaid coverage gap by assisting them in purchasing private insurance. This report provides a racial equity impact …

A Racial Impact Analysis Of Hb 32: Minimum Wage Increase, Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute, Virginia Commonwealth University, Gena Burr, Danise Harmon, Uzziah Harris, Tammy Martin Jan 2014

A Racial Impact Analysis Of Hb 32: Minimum Wage Increase, Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute, Virginia Commonwealth University, Gena Burr, Danise Harmon, Uzziah Harris, Tammy Martin

L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs Publications

The racial equity impact of HB 32 is important because minorities in Virginia disproportionately work in minimum wage positions. The purpose of this report is to provide a racial impact analysis of House Bill (HB) 32, legislation proposed in the 2014 Virginia General Assembly to increase the minimum wage from $7.25 to $8.50 an hour. According to 2013 data, 1.8 million workers in Virginia are paid hourly rates and 6.8 percent of these workers earn the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. Examining fiscal years 2015 to 2020 for the Commonwealth, such an increase would cost $2,712,696. This impact …

A Racial Impact Analysis Of Hb 994: Human Trafficking, Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute, Virginia Commonwealth University, Staci Boone, Traci Deshazor, Selonia Miles, Katina Williams Jan 2014

A Racial Impact Analysis Of Hb 994: Human Trafficking, Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute, Virginia Commonwealth University, Staci Boone, Traci Deshazor, Selonia Miles, Katina Williams

L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs Publications

Human Trafficking has become an international crisis that has caused a devastating impact on the Commonwealth of Virginia. The purpose of this report is to examine the racial equity impact of Virginia House Bill 944. HB 994 was introduced to the House by Delegate Barbara Comstock, along with 13 other members of the House and was passed by the House of Delegates and was Passed Indefinitely in Courts of Justice with letter in 2014. This Bill, as initially introduced, would have made it a felony to participate in Human Trafficking by expanding the definition of abduction/kidnapping. It also would have …

Valuing Governance, Beatriz Trigo Jan 2014

Valuing Governance, Beatriz Trigo

Spanish Faculty Publications

Book Summary: As has been abundantly documented in the popular and academic press, the humanities are facing challenging times marked by national debate regarding the importance of the humanities in higher education, program and budget cuts, and an ever-decreasing number of tenure-track jobs. In addition, the humanities face quite literally a quantification of their value as the Academy adopts a more corporate mindset.

This volume provides advice to professionals in the humanities on how to forge a useful, compelling, and productive career. The book’s 13 chapters address professional approaches to developing and maintaining an active research agenda, fomenting the ideals …

Narrativa Oscura: The Open Question Of Tennessee Williams's "One Arm", Jacqueline O'Connor Jan 2014

Narrativa Oscura: The Open Question Of Tennessee Williams's "One Arm", Jacqueline O'Connor

English Literature Faculty Publications and Presentations

In the introduction to Tennessee Williams’s Collected Stories (1985), Gore Vidal suggests the stories “are the true memoir of Tennessee Williams. Whatever happened to him, real or imagined, is here. Except for an occasional excursion into fantasy, he sticks close to life as he experienced or imagined it” (xx). At the time of the volume’s publication, just two years after Williams’s death, critical attention to the short fiction had focused primarily on its significance as apprentice work and as source material for the plays that made him famous; when Dennis Vannatta published the first book-length study of the short fiction …

Disciplinarity And Trandisciplinarity In The Study Of Knowledge, Jay H. Bernstein Jan 2014

Disciplinarity And Trandisciplinarity In The Study Of Knowledge, Jay H. Bernstein

Publications and Research

Scholarly inquiry about the nature and significance of knowledge has been shaped by disciplinary traditions and priorities that define “knowledge” differently and result in disconnected literatures. In the mid to late twentieth century, library science educator Jesse Shera sought to bridge the conceptual gap between epistemological and sociological approaches to knowledge in proposing a new discipline he called social epistemology. Around the same time, long-term projects by the economist Fritz Machlup and the physical chemist turned philosopher of science Michael Polanyi did not merely combine existing disciplinary approaches but transcended conventional frameworks for conceptualizing knowledge. These scholars can be viewed …

Slimmer, Brighter, And Nearly Perfect: The New Big History Textbook Is Here, Mojgan Behmand Jan 2014

Slimmer, Brighter, And Nearly Perfect: The New Big History Textbook Is Here, Mojgan Behmand

Collected Faculty Scholarship

Rarely has the appearance of a new textbook been the cause of such delight as broke out amongst the First Year Experience faculty at Dominican University of California in August 2013. The book that triggered such reaction is a seemingly unassuming volume, Big History: Between Nothing and Everything (2013), written by historians David Christian, Cynthia Stokes Brown, and Craig Benjamin, and published by McGraw-Hill. Why was the book greeted with such enthusiasm, you might ask? Was it that the world needed another textbook on history? That the Dominican faculty felt a special bond with one of the authors, Dominican professor …

Centennial Notecards, Anne Giangiulio

Selected Works Temporary Series

From the over 30 watercolor drawings I did of buildings on The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) campus, 24 were selected to be made into high-quality deckle edged blank notecards. The cards are sold on campus in 4 separate packages of 6 cards each for $18 as part of UTEP's Centennial celebration in 2014. These same drawings also became a silk scarf (see also "Silk Scarf designed for UTEP's Centennial Celebration" under the "2013 Portfolio in Depth" header).

A Tightly Raveled Mind, Anne Giangiulio Jan 2014

A Tightly Raveled Mind, Anne Giangiulio

Selected Works Temporary Series

Book cover and interior template I designed for 'A Tightly Raveled Mind' by Diane Lawson, published by Cinco Puntos Press. Sigmund Freud would have liked Dr. Nora Goodman, a sexy forty-something psychoanalyst with her handful of neurotic patients who can't seem to allow themselves happiness, love, or success. She's not exactly a steady customer herself, born to a ranting bipolar Talmudic scholar and a mother with a heart as cold as a slaughterhouse on the Kansas prairie in January. But now she has two kids and an overbearing psychiatrist husband. She hates him. She hates his insular social world. Nora …
