Nashe’S Poem For Ferdinando Stanley, Lord Strange, Jennifer Andersen Jan 2014

Nashe’S Poem For Ferdinando Stanley, Lord Strange, Jennifer Andersen

English Faculty Publications

This article makes a case for the dedication of "The Choise of Valentines" to Ferdinando Stanley, Lord Strange, and explores some of its ramifications for the interpretation of the poem. Beyond the significance of this identification for the poem, establishing the dedication to Lord Strange and Nashe’s participation in elite literary coteries would also be more broadly significant for Nashe studies.

The Freedom Of Thought, In Dream-Life If Nowhere Else: Freud, Foucault, And Euripides, Sharon Sliwinski Jan 2014

The Freedom Of Thought, In Dream-Life If Nowhere Else: Freud, Foucault, And Euripides, Sharon Sliwinski

Data and Test Instruments

This essay examines the “dead daughter in a box" dream, initially reported in Freud's The Interpretation of Dreams (1900), in order to explore two, related ideas: First, the dream is considered an exemplar of the work of symbolization, and in particular, a means for the dreamer to work through the fantasy of infanticide. Second, the dreamer’s disclosure of her dream is treated as an example of parrhesia – a particular speech act that Michel Foucault regarded as central to democracy. The overarching aim is to view dream-life as a quotidian and crucial site for the freedom of thought and speech.

Unveiling The Monster: Memory And Film In Post-Dictatorial Spain, Juan Pablo Pacheco Bejarano Jan 2014

Unveiling The Monster: Memory And Film In Post-Dictatorial Spain, Juan Pablo Pacheco Bejarano

Self-Designed Majors Honors Papers

In 2007, the Spanish congress approved the Law of Historical Memory, recognizing a collective desire to exorcize the ghosts and monsters from its abject and repressed traumatic past. Spanish contemporary identities are still heavily impacted by the traumatic Civil War (1939) and the nearly forty-year long dictatorship (1939-1975) that marked most of its twentieth century’s history. This research focuses on a close reading of three films located within the aesthetic tradition of the Grotesque and the Gothic, and situated within the aftermath of the Civil War: El Espíritu de la Colmena (The Spirit of the Beehive) (1973) by Victor Erice, …

The Moral Code Of Las, Bryant Dawson Jan 2014

The Moral Code Of Las, Bryant Dawson

Kristi Schultz Broughton Liberal Arts Essay Contest

2014 Topic: Somewhere Between Right and Wrong

The distinction between what is right to do and what is callous or offensive marks many of our decisions and can shape our lives and the lives of those affected by our actions and attitudes for better or worse. Moral choices are pervasive; we encounter them in the occupations on which we may embark, the research we may perform, and the lives that we lead. There is no universal agreement on the principles that should guide our moral choices (e.g. many tend to equate what is right with personal advantage or with some …

Children In The Films Of Alfred Hitchcock, Debbie Olson, Jason Mcentee Jan 2014

Children In The Films Of Alfred Hitchcock, Debbie Olson, Jason Mcentee

English Faculty Books

Jason McEntee is a contributing author, "'The Future’s Not Ours to See’: How Children and Young Adults Reflect the Anxiety of Lost Innocence in Alfred Hitchcock’s American Movies.”, pp.31-46.

Children and youth perform both innocence and knowingness within Hitchcock's complex cinematic texts. Though the child often plays a small part, their significance - symbolically, theoretically, and philosophically - offers a unique opportunity to illuminate and interrogate the child presence within the cinematic complexity of Hitchcock's films.
