Oakes Smith Returns To Maine, Timothy Scherman Jan 2014

Oakes Smith Returns To Maine, Timothy Scherman

English Faculty Publications

In June 2014, I was invited to deliver a lecture on Elizabeth Oakes Smith as part of the Gorman Lecture Series at the Yarmouth History Center, a short distance from Oakes Smith's birthplace. I took the occasion to caution those who base their readings of Oakes Smith's works (and those of other women) on their written autobiographies--as if the life of the woman writer stood as the "origin" the woman-as-author could only "copy." Calling attention to the context of Oakes Smith's writing of her autobiography (at which point her popularity was fading, her family disgraced and most of her friends …

Using interviews, community resources, program strategies, and a humanistic philosophy the author discusses the …

The Feminine Personification Of Death In Gustave Moreau’S Evening And Sorrow, May Johnson Jan 2014

The Feminine Personification Of Death In Gustave Moreau’S Evening And Sorrow, May Johnson

The Corinthian

This paper will argue that Moreau’s depiction of the female embodies the seductive and destructive nature of death which preoccupied the arts and literature of the late nineteenth-century. Moreau’s Evening and Sorrow, effectively conveys the increased interest in emotions, and psychology, as a counter-action to the predominance of natural sciences, during the late-nineteenth century.

Review: Mcmullin, Irene. Time And The Shared World: Heidegger On Social Relations, Robert J. Dostal Jan 2014

Review: Mcmullin, Irene. Time And The Shared World: Heidegger On Social Relations, Robert J. Dostal

Philosophy Faculty Research and Scholarship

According to McMullin, injustice is, for Heidegger, the insistence on "my time ... my now." Because the "social" and "justice" are themes of the book, a reader might expect some discussion of the political dimension of human life; but there is no reference to the political, no discussion of the significance of the hero, and no reference to the distinction of the social and the communal (at the cost of the "social") that Heidegger makes toward the end of Being and Time.

Rhetoric And Platonism In Fifth-Century Athens, Damian Caluori Jan 2014

Rhetoric And Platonism In Fifth-Century Athens, Damian Caluori

Philosophy Faculty Research

There are reasons to believe that relations between Platonism and rhetoric in Athens during the fifth century CE were rather close. Both were major pillars of pagan culture, or paideia, and thus essential elements in the defense of paganism against increasingly powerful and repressive Christian opponents. It is easy to imagine that, under these circumstances, paganism was closing ranks and that philosophers and orators united in their efforts to save traditional ways and values. Although there is no doubt some truth to this view, a closer look reveals that the relations between philosophy and rhetoric were rather more complicated. …

The Nature And Possibility Of Public Philosophy, Jeremy Barris Jan 2014

The Nature And Possibility Of Public Philosophy, Jeremy Barris

Humanities Faculty Research

The article argues that there is a central problem with the concept of public philosophy, in that philosophy is partly defined by questioning reflection on its own sense, while public or popular culture characteristically relies unreflectively on its ultimate givens, and these are mutually exclusive modes of thought. The article proposes, however, that because of philosophy’s reflection on and potential questioning of its own sense it has a paradoxical structure of foundational and comprehensive conflict with itself and its own procedure, and that this self-divergence allows a genuinely philosophical role for public philosophy. In the public context, acknowledged failure to …

What's The New Deal With Marshall? Depression Relief And Higher Education, Hubert Wesley Rolling Jan 2014

What's The New Deal With Marshall? Depression Relief And Higher Education, Hubert Wesley Rolling

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Employing archival research, this study examines the history of the New Deal’s influence on higher education, focusing on Marshall University, at the time Marshall College, from approximately 1932-1940. First, it analyzes the Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA) and National Youth Administration (NYA) student part-time employment program’s impact on the college. Second, it discusses the PWA’s (Public Works Administration) and WPA’s (Works Progress Administration) building programs’ and flood relief efforts’ effect on Marshall. Finally, this study explores the political implications of the New Deal with emphasis on state politics and financial problems and their relationship to Marshall. A study of Marshall …

Scandalous Deception In The Castle: An Examination Of The Gender Performance Through The Bedtrick Trope In Arthurian Literature, Abby Louise Daniel Jan 2014

Scandalous Deception In The Castle: An Examination Of The Gender Performance Through The Bedtrick Trope In Arthurian Literature, Abby Louise Daniel

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The bedtrick – mistaken identity in a sexual encounter – is a comic motif employed by medieval, renaissance and modern storytellers. While modern readers tend to recognize this motif as (at best) a disturbing sexual escapade and (at worst) rape, the scholarship on mistaken identity in medieval literature still generally glosses over the bedtrick as a moment of comedy. My thesis examines the literary trope of the bedtrick through the critical lens of Judith Butler’s performativity theory, and the motives behind this form of deception and the modern implications. Furthermore, the bedtrick trope is explored in Malory’s Le Morte Darthur …

Tutoring Esl Students For Improvements In Language Skills, Hollie R. Craddock Jan 2014

Tutoring Esl Students For Improvements In Language Skills, Hollie R. Craddock

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Much research has been conducted from the framework of Vygotsky’s Sociocultural Theory, and on the concept of the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). SCT has a wide application in many fields, including Second Language Acquisition (SLA).

This study collected and analyzed audio-recordings of voluntary, one-on-one tutoring sessions that took place over a six-week period in an Intensive English Program at an American University. The participants included both faculty and peer tutors and English Language Learners (ELLs) in the IE program. The recordings were analyzed to determine if any patterns emerged regarding the target language features on which the tutoring sessions …

Why We Stay, Brittany Nicole Mcintyre Jan 2014

Why We Stay, Brittany Nicole Mcintyre

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Why we stay is a piece of Creative Non-Fiction, is a work that is heavily focused on region. The narrative takes up the life of a female Appalachian. The challenges of being an Appalachian woman raising a family are analyzed alongside such issues as domestic violence, family dysfunction, and mental illness. Because the piece is set in both rural and urban Appalachia, the issue of family is examined in terms of generational conflict and the strong bonds of a matriarch.
