Undermining Heteronormativity In Kate Chopin's The Awakening, Susan G. Weber
Undermining Heteronormativity In Kate Chopin's The Awakening, Susan G. Weber
ETD Archive
Many feminist critics view Edna Pontellier, the protagonist in Kate Chopin's novel The Awakening, as the prototype of the New Woman in search of independence from the patriarchal constraints that suffocate her, including sexual rules and restrictions. Most of these critics frame Edna in a traditional heterosexual world. Although The Awakening overtly focuses on male-female relationships, Edna's relationships with her women friends are more varied, nuanced, and comprehensive than those with men. I argue that Edna's desires are not purely heterosexual which is revealed through several secondary characters in the novel, and that Chopin employs safer heterosexual themes, plots and …

Lateralización De /ɾ/ Implosiva: La Conciencia Fonológica Y Sus Manifestaciones En El Español Puertorriqueño Oral Y Escrito (Lateralization Of Syllable Final /ɾ/: Phonological Consciousness And Its Manifestations In Oral And Written Puerto Rican Spanish), Antonio Medina-Rivera
World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications
This study examines the process of lateralization of syllable final / r / in Puerto Rican Spanish. In addition to analyzing the process in oral speech, this study takes into consideration written registers as well. The results show that the process of lateralization goes beyond oral registers among Puerto Rican Spanish. However, the manifestation of the lateral variant does not only occur as a result of neutralization or confusion between 'r' and 'I.' There seems to be a ludic function and evident intentionality in the use of lateral variant, that in some ways shows a mark of identity among Puerto …

Collaboration And Resistance On The Southwest Frontier: Early Eighteenth-Century Qing Expansion On Two Fronts, John Herman
Collaboration And Resistance On The Southwest Frontier: Early Eighteenth-Century Qing Expansion On Two Fronts, John Herman
History Publications
In 1715 two unrelated international events, the emergence of the Zunghar Mongols in Central Eurasia and Japan’s decision to restrict copper exports to China triggered a burst in Qing expansion into two different regions over the next fifteen years (1715-30), the Kham territory of Eastern Tibet and tusi-controlled territories in neighboring Yunnan and Guizhou provinces. As this article will show, Qing officials posted to Sichuan, Yunnan, and Guizhou during this fifteen-year period were in a very peculiar position. On the one hand, they were authorized to negotiate alliances and grant tusi offices to the local Kham elite in order to …

The Design Studio Environment
The subject of Interior design is a problem-solving methodology, whether it is enhancing the way a building’s space is used, or designing a piece of furniture based on the anthropometrics of the human form. The Technological University Dublin’s BA Interior Design studio class is where these types of problems are generally worked through and solved, with the support of lecturers and peers. The studio class is also where major long-term design projects are designed, created, visualized, and critiqued.
In addition to equipping students with the appropriate skills and ability to develop a creative approach to solving …

Vindiciae, Contra Tyrannos: The Influence Of The Reformed Tradition In The American Founding (Chapter 2 Of Faith And The Founders Of The American Republic), Mark David Hall
Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics
In his magisterial history of religion in America, Yale historian Sydney Ahlstrom estimated that the Reformed tradition was “the religious heritage of three-fourths of the American people in 1776.” This chapter traces the development of Reformed or Calvinist political thought from John Calvin to the American founding. It highlights ways in which Reformed ideas and concerns exacerbated tensions between the American colonies and Great Britain, provided a theological rationale for resisting British rule, and proposed a political framework for republican self-government.
