Learning From And Praying For The Worldwide Church, Maria Eugenia Cornou Phd, Elizabeth Hernandez, Carlos Colón
Learning From And Praying For The Worldwide Church, Maria Eugenia Cornou Phd, Elizabeth Hernandez, Carlos Colón
Symposium on Worship Archive
How can a congregation in one part of the world best pray for our neighbors around the world? How can we shape our congregational prayer in ways that respond to Paul’s admonition to the young pastor Timothy, “that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving be made for everyone, for kings and all who are in high positions, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity” (1 Timothy 2:1-2)? We will listen and learn, with resources from and for different parts of the Church, including stories from natives of different countries and cultures.
Biblical Principles Of Worship, Ron Man
Biblical Principles Of Worship, Ron Man
Symposium on Worship Archive
How do we balance the need for biblical fidelity with the need for cultural sensitivity and relevance in our worship? This seminar will consider some of the unchanging, transcultural, non-negotiable biblical foundations for our worship, which also allow for a tremendous amount of freedom and creativity as we put these principles into practice.
Five Stages On The Journey Of Disability Attitudes, Dan Quist, Dan Vander Plaats
Five Stages On The Journey Of Disability Attitudes, Dan Quist, Dan Vander Plaats
Symposium on Worship Archive
Based on the idea that the most disabling aspect of life with disabilities is the attitudes of others, Dan and Dan will show us how our attitudes often marginalize those God has called into God’s kingdom and service. By showing us just how our attitudes get instilled in us, exposing us to the truth of those attitudes, and finally appealing to the very presence of the Kingdom-at-hand, our friends from Elim Christian Services (http://www.elimcs.org) will help us understand and change our approach to working with marginalized people-groups all around us, especially those affected by disabilities.

Reading For Preaching: The Preacher In Conversation With Storytellers, Biographers, Poets, And Journalists, Cornelius Plantinga
Reading For Preaching: The Preacher In Conversation With Storytellers, Biographers, Poets, And Journalists, Cornelius Plantinga
Symposium on Worship Archive
This workshop is for anyone who is interested both in good reading and in good preaching and, especially, in how the first supports the second. Introducing and drawing upon the presenter's new book on this topic, this session will propose ways that a program of general reading is likely to benefit the preacher. For example, well chosen reading is likely to start the preacher's heart, to tune the preacher's ear, and to make the preacher wise. Wisdom is requisite because folly in the pulpit is homiletical malpractice.
Proclamation In The Psalms For Christian Worship, Cornelius Plantinga
Proclamation In The Psalms For Christian Worship, Cornelius Plantinga
Symposium on Worship Archive
A proclamation is a confident and significant declaration. A proclamation does not say “I wish that God were in charge.” A proclamation says, “The Lord reigns.” A proclamation does not say, “I feel that God wants to take care of me.” A proclamation says “The Lord is my shepherd.” A proclamation is a confident and significant statement of what is true of God and the world, and the Psalms are full of them. This workshop will explore trenchant proclamations in the psalms and suggest uses of these proclamations in Christian worship.

John Ferguson will share techniques for leading many nontraditional styles of congregational song from the organ, using his new resource Many and Great: Introductions and Accompaniments for Global Hymns (Morningstar). If you own this resource, bring it to the workshop!
Listening To Your Listeners: A Preaching Preparation Process That Changes…Everything!, Lori Carrell
Listening To Your Listeners: A Preaching Preparation Process That Changes…Everything!, Lori Carrell
Symposium on Worship Archive
A vast majority of listeners attending U.S. churches have never talked with a pastor about a sermon. And, unfortunately, those listeners report by the thousands that though they expect spiritual growth as they listen to their preachers, it usually does not occur. Preachers who listen to their listeners as a regular part of sermon preparation can expect to change these patterns, increasing the spiritual impact of preaching for individuals, congregations, communities – and culture. During this workshop, participants will discover how diverse congregations have established and maintained pre-sermon dialogue groups (without adding to the preachers’ limited sermon prep time!).

The Art And Craft Of Creating Texts For Congregational Song, Ruth Duck
Symposium on Worship Archive
Ruth Duck, widely published author of many psalm and hymn texts, including in Lift Up Your Hearts and Psalms for All Seasons, will introduce several of her texts and speak about her process in writing hymns. As a seminary professor of worship, she has many insights to offer about writing, theology, and worship as they intersect in congregational singing.
Complementary Prayers: Prayers To Accompany The Psalms, Hymns, And Spiritual Songs Of The New Hymnal Lift Up Your Hearts, Cornelius Plantinga
Complementary Prayers: Prayers To Accompany The Psalms, Hymns, And Spiritual Songs Of The New Hymnal Lift Up Your Hearts, Cornelius Plantinga
Symposium on Worship Archive
Worship leaders live off the work of worship planners and add touches of their own, sometimes celebrating in prayer the power of what the congregation has just sung or, in a prayed line or two, anticipating what the congregation will sing in a moment. This workshop will display and discuss prayers that have been composed to complement psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs in Lift Up Your Hearts. The idea is to give planners and leaders prayers they may use verbatim or in part—or take simply as suggestions for composing their own prayers, written or extemporaneous.

El Culto Como Discipulado, Maria Eugenia Cornou
El Culto Como Discipulado, Maria Eugenia Cornou
Symposium on Worship Archive
Communal worship is a holistic experience which explicitly or even unconsciously shapes the character and identity of each participant. In this workshop we will explore how different worship practices influence believers’ spiritual formation. …

Artist’s Statement
Vibrant art has always evoked a sense of awe within me. Thinking back to August of 2010, I was still in recovery from a stroke when I first visited the Richmond Center for the Visual Arts; Yinka Shonibare’s works were on display. I knew not of who he was, but I was struck by the brilliant colors that comprised Shonibare’s Victorian-inspired costumes, made from Dutch wax-printed cotton. They drew me in like a moth to flame. I toddled and wobbled around each figure, looking up — some were on stilts— I couldn’t pull my eyes away, and the …

The Super Bowl, Richard C. Crepeau
The Super Bowl, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
Here we are once again at the most important weekend in American sport. The Super Bowl is Sunday and that means that Americans across the land will create scenes reminiscent of Thorstein Veblen’s classic, The Theory of the Leisure Class. Veblen’s original vocabulary describing the rich of the late 19th century is as appropriate now as it was then. Such phrases as “conspicuous consumption,” “conspicuous waste” and “conspicuous leisure,” seem to have been coined for the Super Bowl.

The Trouble With Beginning, Middle & End, Julie Patterson
Articles
I recently helped judge a story writing contest, and one of the criteria on the assessment form I was provided was: Does the story have a beginning, middle and end? As I began reading the entries, I quickly discovered that this was not useful assessment criteria.

Transcription Of 19th Century Documents From The Archives Of The British East India Company, Ngaio Palmer, Paul Kerry
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In May 2000, I traveled to England to pursue research for my honors thesis at the British Library and the Bodleian Library at the University of Oxford. In the course of my research, I happened to come across two case files of documents relating to the dubious business relationship between the private press of my great, great, great-grandfather, George Wood, and Dr. James Rind, the superintendent of the Government Lithographic Press of Calcutta, ca. 1829.

Royal Correspondence In The Lancut Archive, Thomas M. Pearson, Dr. Douglas Tobler
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In 1980, BYU’s acquisition librarian purchased a large collection (96 boxes) of historical documents, which originated from the Lancut castle in southeastern Poland. The archive is a wonderful social, economic, and cultural record of the noble families that lived at the castle. The materials cover a wide span of time, ranging from the 15th century up until the onset of World War II, and include letters, maps, legal documents, genealogies, grants and charters, estate inventories, and other original documents. Because the archive has been in private hands for so many years, these materials have only recently become available for scholarly …

Forgotten Battles Of The Civil War: Victories Over Disease In Nashville, Tennessee, And New Orleans, Louisiana, Michael Packer, Dr. Mary Stovall Richards
Journal of Undergraduate Research
During the Civil War disease was a major problem. Many different diseases combined to cause immense problems for civilians and army personnel alike. More soldiers died from disease than from battle. While medical knowledge was growing, physicians had neither the knowledge nor the understanding to combat most diseases. Doctors both North and South had little success against many illnesses.

Continued Neglect: Albuquerque Women’S Literacy, 1848-1870, Lori Rasmussen, Dr. Mary Stovall Richards

The rhetoric of the Mexican-American War, and indeed, the entire expansionist era, claimed that the United States had a God-given responsibility to spread their white, Protestant, capitalistic, and democratic civilization to the heathen of the world. Though sometimes implied, and sometimes explicit, the notion included the idea of educating the barbarians who held a tenuous grasp on the land. Education in this sense meant indoctrination into American culture, including the English language, high literacy rates, gender roles, and a multitude of other facets.1 During the middle part of the nineteenth century, Northern states moved rapidly toward a truly literate …

Searching For Julia Jacquette, Natalie Thompson Nielson, Dr. Michael Phillips
Journal of Undergraduate Research
I applied for the ORCA grant hoping to learn more about the contemporary artist Julia Jacquette. I had first discovered her work on the website for New York’s Museum of Modern Art, which was showing a few representative works from artists currently on display. Her work caught my interest because of its originality, its post-feminist themes, and most importantly, its interplay between word and image, and I decided to research her more thoroughly for my honors thesis. I had researched her as much as I could when I applied for this grant, and I was hoping that the grant would …
Four Poems, Four Voices: Fragmented Authorship In Fernando Pessoa, James Peter Rasmussen, Dr. Steven P. Sondrup
Four Poems, Four Voices: Fragmented Authorship In Fernando Pessoa, James Peter Rasmussen, Dr. Steven P. Sondrup
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The poetry of Fernando Pessoa contributes in a highly original way to a significant twentieth-century aesthetic development: the attempt to overthrow Romantic conceptions of authorship. Through the creation of his “heteronyms”—invented poets with a large degree of independence in style, form, imagery, and thought to whom he attributes his poetry—Pessoa’s poetry fragments into many distinct voices and thus challenges the notion of coherent authorial identity. Fernando Pessoa’s heteronymic structure itself is thus a quintessentially modern voice. The heteronyms challenge, as critic Darlene J. Sadlier writes, “the notion of coherent identity” (118).1 With the fragmentation of the poetic voice, the romantic …

Economics And Education Vs. Griots: Threats To Traditional Performers In The Senegalese Arts, Joseph B. Hill, Dr. Michael D. Phillips
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In much of West Africa, the griot is the central figure in the performing arts. Traditionally, only those born into the griot caste perform publicly in any capacity, be it in music, dance, historical recitation, public speaking, or jesting. Although other castes look down on such work, griots embrace it and carefully guard their monopoly. Immune to most social sanctions, griots speak good and bad with impunity, and nobles pay dearly to ensure that griots say only good (1).
