Sacred Land, Common Ground, Contested Territory: The Healing Mother Of Velankanni Basilica And The Infant Jesus Shrine In Bangalore, Vasudha Narayanan
Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies
The local tea stall blares the Tamil song as I walk in a street near the shrine of the Infant Jesus in Bangalore, in the state of Karnataka. The tune and words sound like any number of Tamil film songs I have heard. And, in fact, I do think it is a film song for it is not unusual in this genre of romantic music to refer to one's lover in an hyperbolic way as a metaphoric god or goddess. But these words are followed by the name that tells me it is not film music- Come, O lord, and …

Institutional Repositories Supporting Community Engagement: Campus And Community Partnerships At Linfield College, Kathleen Spring, Brenda Devore Marshall
Faculty & Staff Presentations
Building partnerships with community-oriented research centers and departments is one of the best ways to develop an institutional repository into a valued community resource. This presentation examines partnerships with the Linfield Center for the Northwest (LCN) and the Department of Theatre and Communication Arts to demonstrate how Linfield’s institutional repository supports faculty research, student internships, multimedia exhibits, oral histories, and original theatrical productions.

After The Fall, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department
2012-2013 Season
In the early stages of a new love, paralyzing memories of past relationships haunt Quentin, a liberal New York attorney who questions his own ability to truly connect with the women in his life. Arthur Miller’s most personal and autobiographical play, After the Fall, unflinchingly tackles the emotional brutality that can unfold within a marriage, against a national backdrop of McCarthyism and the commodification of celebrity. In doing so, Miller unravels the political complications in personal relationships while exposing the personal consequences of big-issue politics.

Shattered By War: The Huber Family, John M. Rudy
Shattered By War: The Huber Family, John M. Rudy
Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public
The tale of Sergent Frederick Huber is relatively well known. The young man, fighting at the battle of Fair Oaks, was struck by three rounds, the final a bullet through his breast that quickly sapped him of his life. The Adams Sentinel reported the incident in the early summer days of 1862, underlining Frederick's bravery in the face of the great beyond. "Tell Father," he reportedly said with his dying breath, according to the Sentinel, "I have died for my country." [excerpt]
Saints In Gilead: Robinson's Revisionist Calvinism And John Ames As A Reconciliatory Figure In American Congregationalist History, Makayla Camille Steiner
Saints In Gilead: Robinson's Revisionist Calvinism And John Ames As A Reconciliatory Figure In American Congregationalist History, Makayla Camille Steiner
Theses and Dissertations
A Congregationalist by choice and a Calvinist by tradition, Marilynne Robinson has a theological background that significantly influences the development of her fictional characters, especially in her Pulitzer Prize winning novel, Gilead. Much has been written about Robinson's particular brand of Calvinism—by both Robinson herself and other literary critics—which tends to be far more hopeful about grace, agency, and the beauties of the natural world than traditional interpretations allow. Little, however, has been written about how the trajectory of Congregationalism as an organizational force in the national narrative influences the decisions of and relationships between her fictional characters. Gilead depicts …
Women In The 1919 Egyptian Revolution: From Feminist Awakening To Nationalist Political Activism, Nabila Ramdani
Women In The 1919 Egyptian Revolution: From Feminist Awakening To Nationalist Political Activism, Nabila Ramdani
Journal of International Women's Studies
The formation of a feminist consciousness in Egypt ran parallel with the country’s rapid development as a modern state at the start of the 19th century. Technological advancements within Muhammad Ali’s increasingly capitalistic, secular country were accompanied by burgeoning intellectual thought among all sections of society, including women. By the end of the century, a middle-class female literary culture had become indelibly associated with a nationwide feminist awakening.
The feminist element to the wider independence movement was both vocal and powerful, as women rallied under the ‘Egypt for the Egyptians’ slogan. Elite women who had organised themselves politically had first …

Microcredit Lending To Female Entrepreneurs: A Middle East Case Study, Alida M. Gomez
Journal of International Women's Studies
There are more than 4 billion people in the world living off of less than 1500USD per year. These are the people worldwide without access to commercial banks and credit unions. These are the people that microcredit lending institutions are here to help. This paper focuses on the advantages to allocating the microcredit loans to female entrepreneurs. Highlighting women’s empowerment through microcredit lending, and using the Middle East as a case study, this paper uses studies from throughout the region that show that microcredit loans are improving communication, access to information regarding rights, and improved household welfare. Through access to …
Jordanian Social Norms And The Risk Of Intimate Partner Violence And Limited Reproductive Agency, Jennifer Mccleary-Sills
Jordanian Social Norms And The Risk Of Intimate Partner Violence And Limited Reproductive Agency, Jennifer Mccleary-Sills
Journal of International Women's Studies
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a pervasive global problem that violates the rights of millions of women each year and has been linked with a multitude of adverse physical, mental, and reproductive health outcomes. In Jordan, socio-cultural constructs of masculinity and female sexuality legitimize control exerted on and violence perpetrated against women. These include the gendered social norms that keep women in disempowered positions and limit their ability make fundamental reproductive decisions such as whether and when to become pregnant. This paper explores some of the mechanisms by which low levels of gender equity increase Jordanian women’s risk of violence …
Gender Standards V. Democratic Standards: Revisiting The Paradox, Amel Mili
Gender Standards V. Democratic Standards: Revisiting The Paradox, Amel Mili
Journal of International Women's Studies
In our past work, we had analyzed the correlation between gender standards and democratic standards in post-colonial North Africa, and found it to be essentially non-existent, despite the fact that these two standards are highly correlated worldwide, and despite the analytical evidence to the effect that they go hand in hand. We revisit our previous analysis, in light of recent developments in North Africa and the Middle East.
