Quechuañol: Préstamos Lexicales En El Quechua De Cochabamba, Kyle Coombs Apr 2013

Quechuañol: Préstamos Lexicales En El Quechua De Cochabamba, Kyle Coombs

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This essay is a supplement for Imatataj tata intiqa rikun? or What Does Papa Sun See? in English. The essay explains the methodology used to collect data and write this children’s book. The investigation focuses on lexical borrows from Spanish to Cochabambino Quechua. Using a drawing of a farm, these borrowed words are found in an area, agriculture, which existed before the Spanish arrived. Many borrowings replace historic words of Quechua. The essay and book recognize that language can change and does not judge the ways that Quechua has changed. The investigation concludes that there are many borrowed words, but …

Navigating Body, Class, And Disability In The Life Of Agnes Burns Wieck, Caroline Waldron Merithew Apr 2013

Navigating Body, Class, And Disability In The Life Of Agnes Burns Wieck, Caroline Waldron Merithew

History Faculty Publications

The concerns expressed in Burns Wieck’s letter to Hapgood typify many of the issues that occupied her during the course of her life. She, like many Americans in the early twentieth century, thought that there were economic disparities as well as great cultural divisions between the working and middle classes in a capitalist system. Burns Wieck worried about how nature and environment shaped physical and emotional existence for her as a woman and as a worker.4 A question she asked about childbirth in her letter—“Why, oh why, can’t they find some way to humanize that experience?”—is one that she might …

God's Will & Man's Will: Predestination, Election, & Free Will, Arnold G. Fruchtenbaum Apr 2013

God's Will & Man's Will: Predestination, Election, & Free Will, Arnold G. Fruchtenbaum

Alumni Book Gallery

The age-old antinomy still rages today. If people are really able to make moral, meaningful decisions, then somehow they must be able to act against God's will. But if people can act against God's will, then how can God be said to be sovereign? In other words, how can we be both free and predestined at the same time? Dr. Fruchtenbaum offers a balanced and biblical plea in this engaging study that examines the issues of God's sovereignty in relation to human responsibility.

Plutarch’S Alexander: An Endorsement Of Platonism And Living As A Philosopher, Sergio E. Gonzalez Apr 2013

Plutarch’S Alexander: An Endorsement Of Platonism And Living As A Philosopher, Sergio E. Gonzalez

Academic Leadership Journal in Student Research

Man has often had an inclination to promote his way of living to his fellow man. Believing that his way of approaching life is superior to all others, he has defended and enforced his views against and upon others. He has done this by way of reasoning and by way of violence. Although most instances of this natural desire are recognized in the form of wars and acts of violence, there have also been many other prominent instances involving peaceful reasoning, such as the revolutionary movements of Martin Luther King Jr. and Gandhi. Plutarch, a Greco-Roman historian and writer, is …

Christine De Pizan And Sacred History, Vickie Mann Apr 2013

Christine De Pizan And Sacred History, Vickie Mann

Academic Leadership Journal in Student Research

Christine de Pizan was an author living in 15th century France whose writings highlighted the courageous actions of women that helped to strengthen their society. Living under the shadow of misogynist writers, she illuminated the female’s right to equality long before other French writers would broach the subject. Particularly enlightening in this respect is her book The City of Women, presenting the positive attributes of women. Globally speaking, Jeffrey Richards has interpreted the book as a treatise on religious doctrine. I will seek to demonstrate what I believe to be her true intent: to lay a foundation of equality of …

John Evelyn: The Forestry Of Imagination, James C. Mckusick Apr 2013

John Evelyn: The Forestry Of Imagination, James C. Mckusick

English Faculty Publications

John Evelyn was appointed as a founding member of the Royal Society in 1662, and in this capacity he published Sylva, or a Discourse of Forest-Trees, and the Propagation of Timber (1664). Evelyn's Sylva foreshadows the development of a conservationist ethic in the management of forests and wildlands throughout the English-speaking world. In this treatise, Evelyn advocates the replanting of woodlands that had been devastated during the English Civil War as a means of restoring the nation's defenses, particularly its navy and merchant marine. The book describes the various kinds of trees, their cultivation, and the best use for each …

Ecological Integrity In Protected Areas: Two Interpretations, Gorden Steinhoff Apr 2013

Ecological Integrity In Protected Areas: Two Interpretations, Gorden Steinhoff

Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

Federal environmental legislation and policy in the United States require that managers seek to maintain natural conditions or “naturalness” within national parks, wilderness, and other protected areas.1 A number of experts in protected area management have argued, however, that naturalness should be abandoned as a mandatory goal in these areas. In the recently published book, Beyond Naturalness, leading management experts strongly recommend changes in protected area law and policy to allow alternative goals.2 One goal recommended by these experts for many management situations is maintaining ecological integrity.3 Indeed, ecological integrity is currently the management goal required by law in Canadian …

Uprooting Where Others Sowed? Presbyterian And Moravian Missionaries In Russian Orthodox Alaska, George Faithful Apr 2013

Uprooting Where Others Sowed? Presbyterian And Moravian Missionaries In Russian Orthodox Alaska, George Faithful

Collected Faculty Scholarship

The arrival in Native Alaskan communities of Russians in the mid-18th century and Americans in the mid-19th century brought lasting change. What that change constituted is a matter of debate. This paper will attempt to look at multiple sides of the story, considering the perspectives of Russians and Americans, and, most importantly, that of the indigenous Alaskans themselves, as well as that of ethno-historians. By disentangling the layers of polemic and hagiography left by Presbyterian and Moravian missionaries, I will demonstrate their corrosive impact at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century on the cultures and …

Game Theory, The Prisoner's Dilemma, And The Book Of Mormon, Robert F. Schwartz Apr 2013

Game Theory, The Prisoner's Dilemma, And The Book Of Mormon, Robert F. Schwartz

BYU Studies

Game theory has been applied to a number of disciplines, including economics, law, politics, sociology, and Bible studies, but this article is the first serious attempt to apply it to the Book of Mormon narrative. One particularly important model in game theory is known as the Prisoner's Dilemma, which emphasizes the possibility and benefits of cooperation in the face of conflict. The Book of Mormon account is an almost constant narrative based on conflict, first within the family of Lehi and then between two warring factions that arise from a split in that original Book of Mormon family. These conflicts …

Salzburg Chorbuch W.B. Xiv Magnificat Traditions In Post-Tridentine Salzburg, C. Michael Porter

Music Faculty Publications and Presentations

The cultural and political climate of post-Tridentine Salzburg was transformed in 1587 with the election of prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Reitenau (1559–1617). This Italianate leader, due to his charisma and strong theological education at Rome's Collegium Germanicum, ushered in a new era of Catholic reform. In addition to reforming the regional Salzburg rite into the approved Roman rite, Wolf Dietrich desired to recreate the artistic environments of his Italian alma mater through the patronage of several musical collections.

Despite these dedications by composers whose works are representative of late sixteenth-century Italian styles, a closer examination of the surviving works …
