[Sabbatical Report], Dawn Hall

Sabbatical Reports

Using a feminist and cultural studies perspective, my project discusses the independent film industry and its treatment of women directors and female oriented narratives. It begins with a snapshot of male filmmakers' challenges and opportunities with a focus on Kelly Reichardt's career, definition of success, and specific model of filmmaking, with a brief comparison to other female filmmakers whose definitions are different and who have chosen a more commercial path. In addition to discussing industry data and feminist film theory, the body of the work focuses on Reichardt's feature films (one per chapter) framing each within her larger political statements. …

The View From Somewhere, Philip M. Weinstein Apr 2013

The View From Somewhere, Philip M. Weinstein

English Literature Faculty Works

The View from Nowhere is the title of Thomas Nagel's influential 1986 study of the quest for objectivity in philosophic endeavors. Nagel grants that each people sees from nowhere, yet he explores why they might still pursue a view from nowhere. Here, Weinstein argues the value of what one sees from one's embedded position.

The Evolution Of The Medici Portrait: From Business To Politics, Mark J. Danford Apr 2013

The Evolution Of The Medici Portrait: From Business To Politics, Mark J. Danford

Masters Theses

The art patronage of Cosimo “il Vecchio” de' Medici (1389-1464) and Grand Duke Cosimo “il Primo” de' Medici (1519-1574) seemed to be driven by very different ideals. While il Vecchio was driven by business and politics, il Primo was driven by politics and dynastic concerns....It will be shown that when Cosimo “il Vecchio” de' Medici was the Medici patriarch (1434-1464),Medici business strength was at its greatest while Medici portraiture was minimal. On the other end of the spectrum, after Cosimo Ide' Medici became the Grand Duke of Tuscany in 1569, Medici political power reached its pinnacle, as did dynastic portraiture.

Analysis Of A Colonial Alphabet Book, Zoha Khatoon Apr 2013

Analysis Of A Colonial Alphabet Book, Zoha Khatoon

4710 English Undergraduate Research: Children’s Literature

This essay analyzes a non-canonical alphabet book written in the nineteenth century. The Colonial Alphabet For The Nursery was written for the child audience during the Victorian era. It associates a word with each letter of the alphabet, and the word is used in a sentence describing its corresponding illustration. This paper explains how the book portrays Great Britain as a world superpower by showing the other countries as poor and insignificant. Much of this alphabet book teaches children the various stereotypes about numerous ethnicities. This allows for them to grow up with misconceptions about diverse racial groups. This essay …

Earthless - A Sonic Exploration Of The Space Between Death And Life, Composed In Five Movements For Chamber Ensemble., Samuel P. Tygiel

Music Honors Projects

“Earthless” is a composition in 5 movements for a mixed chamber ensemble. The piece is loosely programatic and draws its “narrative” from the Tibetan Book of the Dead, a Tibetan Buddhist Text that gives instructions on how to traverse the space between death and rebirth. Rather than telling a direct narrative, each movement is designed to give a broad impression of the different aspects of the experience between death and life through the combination of text and music. The text is taken from poems by Gerard Manley Hopkins, Sir Walter Scott and Sara Teasdale and compiled in an original “libretto” …

Stop! Think! Grade!: Developing A Philosophy Of Writing Evaluation, Terri A. Fredrick Apr 2013

Stop! Think! Grade!: Developing A Philosophy Of Writing Evaluation, Terri A. Fredrick

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

n the first day of my graduate course in evaluating student writing, I ask the students to describe their evaluation philosophy. After a few moments of silence, the students, a mix of graduate assistants and full-time K–12 teachers, begin by telling me what they expect from students’ writing. When prodded to focus on their own evaluation, they list writing issues they mark in student papers. Some describe evaluation practices: “I don’t pick up my pen until I’ve read through the paper at least once,” says one teacher. “Why?” I press. Eventually someone will venture a claim like this one: “I …

RISD XYZ Spring/Summer 2013: Crisscrossing Cultures

[Wandergesellen] is a way of life that points to the distant past – to medieval artisans travelling from village to village to practice and perfect their craft, bringing their skills where they were needed most. But for Eugene (Yevgent) Gladun 00 GD, the world of wandergesellen – or German journeymen – is more relevant than ever.

The Rise And Fall Of Bread In America, Amanda Benson Apr 2013

The Rise And Fall Of Bread In America, Amanda Benson

Academic Symposium of Undergraduate Scholarship

Over the last century bread has gone through cycles of acceptance and popularity in the United States. The pressure exerted on the American bread market by manufacturers’ advertising campaigns and various dietary trends has caused it to go through periods of acceptance and rejection. Before the industrialization of bread making, consumers held few negative views on bread and perceived it primarily as a form of sustenance. After its industrialization, the battle between the manufacturers and the neighborhood bakeries over consumers began. With manufacturers, such as Wonder Bread, trying to maximize profits and dominate the market, corporate leaders aimed to discourage …

Improving Non-Profit Organizations: Mon Ami, Dylan Yang, Kevin Diaz, Santos Miletes, Robert Tonucci

Academic Symposium of Undergraduate Scholarship

For our Collaborative Learning Program winter term group project, we completed community service at Mon Ami [1] and Service by going to the non-profit every Friday to help the teachers in the day care center. While we were there, our group made observations about the non-profit organization. At the end of the community service experience, our group constructed solutions for the problems we discovered at the non-profit organization and recommended ways to implement these solutions. Our research results were presented to our CLP professors in written form and as a formal presentation.

Reading, Writing And Resources: The Conditions Of Creativity, Mariclaire O’Neill

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This paper addresses the question of whether young Samoans are adequately encouraged to pursue creative fields, specifically writing. It examines relevant literature on the role of libraries and catalysts for early-learning reading as well as the benefits of creative writing, uses interviews with professors, editors, authors and librarians in surveying the current state of creative writing among young Samoans and how the roles of the culture, resources and the curriculums impact this, utilizes surveys to gauge student interest in writing, and finally culminates in a creative writing workshop held to expose university students to writing. The findings point to a …
