Transubstantiation And Quantum Physics: The Parallels Of Mystery In Religion And Science, Zachary Sexton Apr 2013

Transubstantiation And Quantum Physics: The Parallels Of Mystery In Religion And Science, Zachary Sexton

Spring 2013, Science and Religion

As the study of physics has progressed into the abstract realm of quanta, some have argued that the notion of transubstantiation is an unreasonable understanding of the Eucharist. However, when confronted with the uncertainty that modern physics presents, sharp parallels between this uncertainty and the metaphysical mysteries of transubstantiation. If it is reasonable to accept uncertainty in quantum physics, then it should be reasonable to accept the mysteries within the metaphysical world.

Can Human Beings Truly Be Considered Free?, Lea Noonan Apr 2013

Can Human Beings Truly Be Considered Free?, Lea Noonan

Spring 2013, Science and Religion

There exists a complex relationship between human freedom and God's divine foreknowledge; the questions surrounding this topic abound and are difficult to answer. The question arises, if God knows all that we think and do, now and in the future, and has Providence over all of our actions, are we truly free; do we have free will? I assert that we do. The arguments that would pit God's foreknowledge and human freedom against each other as incompatible have a faulty foundation surrounding the nature of God's knowledge, His Being, and our purpose in the world. Essentially, the nature of God's …

Heisenberg’S Uncertainty Principle, Matthew Santos Apr 2013

Heisenberg’S Uncertainty Principle, Matthew Santos

Spring 2013, Kuhn's Philosophy of Science

In 1926 Werner Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle set the field of quantum mechanics on a trajectory riddled with indeterminacy, a trajectory which stood in stark contrast with the classical Newtonian world causality and origin. In doing so, Heisenberg effectively created a new standard by which physicists conducted their science, broadened the scope of that science, and altered the very worldview of those physicists. Such paradigmatic upheaval fits the philosophical model of scientific progress posited by Thomas Kuhn. However, in the ever-changing and still-evolving world of quantum mechanics, Heisenberg’s revolutionary work uniquely strays from Kuhn’s model in its further implications.

Syllabus: Kuhn's Philosophy Of Science, Joseph Torchia

Spring 2013, Kuhn's Philosophy of Science

A critical investigation of the philosophy of science of Thomas Kuhn (1922-1996), with a special focus upon his critique of the classical model of the development of science in terms of a cumulative acquisition of knowledge, and by implication, a gradual progression toward truth. In broader terms, the course assesses the metaphysical and epistemological implications of Kuhn’s understanding of scientific change and the possibility of scientific progress.

The Antibiotic Revolution, Alyssa Olsen Apr 2013

The Antibiotic Revolution, Alyssa Olsen

Spring 2013, Kuhn's Philosophy of Science

In 1928, Alexander Fleming discovered Penicillin, which revolutionized the way infections were treated. This discovery was revolutionary because it impacted the scientific field, the medical field, the pharmaceutical industry, and all of humanity. Alexander Fleming’s discovery of Penicillin sparked the development of antibiotics, which has continued to save people’s lives since the revolution. Thomas Kuhn would qualify the discovery of Penicillin by Alexander Fleming as a revolution because it led to a paradigm shift. Prior to the discovery of Penicillin, patients died from trivial injuries and infections. Fleming’s discovery of Penicillin is revolutionary because it changed the worldview of the …

Expelled Once Again: The Fantasy Of Living The Counterlife In Roth’S Nemesis, Victoria Aarons Apr 2013

Expelled Once Again: The Fantasy Of Living The Counterlife In Roth’S Nemesis, Victoria Aarons

English Faculty Research

In Nemesis (2010) the misguided attempts to create and to live an anxiously figured counterlife turn catasttophic as Roth's Bucky Cantor, the Jewish warrior of the Weequahic playgrounds, attempts to step out of his life and reinvent himself Here the art of impersonation is shown to be an impossible failure. For the deluded Bucky Cantor is inevitably stticken, not only with polio, but with the illusion that he can walk out of^ one life—the life bequeathed to him—and inhabit the lives of others. Roth shows the desire to live out the counterlife to be the ultimate self-delusion, exposing instead, as …

Thoughtful reading of Exodus involves recognizing that a predominantly oral culture lies behind the biblical text. Still, the book also records moments of writing—by both Moses and God. Through this covenantal sharing of reading and writing, God and humanity enter into a relationship of disparate power, but mutual responsibility.

The Politics Of Household Budget Research In Colonial Central Africa, Robert Ross Apr 2013

The Politics Of Household Budget Research In Colonial Central Africa, Robert Ross

Zambia Social Science Journal

This paper investigates the various academic studies of the household budgets of Africans living in what became the countries of Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Malawi, and the Congolese province of Katanga. These studies were made during the colonial period, by members of the Rhodes- Livingstone Institute, the Central Statistical Office of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, in what was then Salisbury, and by Belgian researchers in the Congo. It demonstrates how what at first sight appears to be a neutral form of investigation was in fact highly politicised. On the one hand, there were many who showed how African incomes …

Are You Man Enough? A Look At The Attitudes Of Young Male Professionals On Notions Of Masculinity And Male Gender Norms In Modern India, Sanggeet Mithra Manirajah

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Indian society has traditionally adhered to very strict gender roles and norms that dictate the appropriate behaviors and attitudes of men and women in the private and public sphere. In the advent of a rapid urbanization and globalization, these rigid notions of appropriate masculine and feminine behaviors are changing in large metropolitan cities of India. This study explores the attitudes of young Indian male professionals regarding masculinity and masculine gendered norms in Bangalore, the epitome of metropolitan and modern India. Being a man is hinged to the notion of being the head of the family, and the appropriate traits to …
