Marlowe's Questionable Racism: The Struggle Between Human Sentiment And Nurtured Principles, Michelle Rizzo Apr 2013

Marlowe's Questionable Racism: The Struggle Between Human Sentiment And Nurtured Principles, Michelle Rizzo

The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research

In lieu of an abstract, below is the article's first paragraph.

Written between the years of 1898 and 1899, Joseph Conrad's famous novella, Heart of Darkness, fictionalized the historical reality of an area secretly steeped in colonial rule by the viciously greedy and cruel King Leopold II. Between the years of 1885 and 1908, the Belgian ruler transformed the African Congo into his personal empire by exploiting not only the Congo's natural resources (rubber and ivory), but also the Congolese Africans' slave labor. Joseph Conrad published Heart of Darkness in response to his own experiences while traveling in the Belgian …

"In Family Way": Guarding Indigenous Women’S Children In Washington Territory, Katrina Jagodinsky Apr 2013

"In Family Way": Guarding Indigenous Women’S Children In Washington Territory, Katrina Jagodinsky

Department of History: Faculty Publications

The cases discussed here represent very few of the guardianship arrangements that characterized intergenerational and interracial households in territorial Washington, yet the patterns they illustrate correspond with other evidence that allows historians to track the distribution of Indian and mixed- race children in the Puget Sound region. Th e 1880 federal census schedules for counties bordering the Puget Sound reveals the informal guardianship of Native women’s children in ninetytwo households. Among these extralegal arrangements were forty- two households headed by white men, some single like Ed Boggess and others married to white women like Phoebe Judson, who classified the indigenous …

U.S. History And Beyond, Thomas Borstlemann Apr 2013

U.S. History And Beyond, Thomas Borstlemann

Department of History: Faculty Publications

Nearly all readers who have persisted to this point in our roundtable discussion understand the depth of commitment required to write serious book-length history and recognize that most of us are nonetheless likely to reach very small audiences. Such disjuncture between effort and result suggests something about historians— doggedness, perhaps, or other less positive qualities that many of those with whom we live might offer up in an honest moment (mulishness, obsessiveness, irrelevance). Indeed, we seem to be almost the last scholarly discipline that writes mostly books. But this disjuncture also helps explain the scale of my gratitude for receiving …

Christian Navy Chaplains And The Challenge Of Expanding Religious Pluralism, Timothy Oswald

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

Navy chaplains are expected to facilitate for the religious needs of those from other faiths. For chaplains who believe in the exclusivity of the Christian religion, this can create theological and even personal tensions about support for religious practices which the chaplain believes to be false.

This project explores those tensions and proposes ways to help exclusivist Navy chaplains navigate them. The final ministry product is a Power Point® brief. It draws from bibliographic research, …

A Plagued Mind: The Justification Of Violence Within The Principles Of Maximilien Robespierre, Kevin Lynch Apr 2013

A Plagued Mind: The Justification Of Violence Within The Principles Of Maximilien Robespierre, Kevin Lynch

Annual Celebration of Student Scholarship and Creativity

A Plagued Mind: The Justification of Violence within the Principles of Maximilien Robespierre, takes a new look into the political career of the French Revolutionary Maximilien Robespierre. This work explores the reasons as to why a man who valued principles so highly would seemingly turn against them by instituting the Reign of Terror. It follows the course of Robespierre's political career from beginning to end, and explains how each action taken by Robespierre was actually not an attempt to rise to power, but rather a sincere effort to create a republican France. As the French Revolution spiraled into chaos, …

Copper’S Corollaries: Trade And Labour Migration In The Copperbelt (1910-1940), Enid Guene Apr 2013

Copper’S Corollaries: Trade And Labour Migration In The Copperbelt (1910-1940), Enid Guene

Zambia Social Science Journal

The geopolitical importance of the mining industry in Zambia and Katanga, and the rural-urban migration patterns that it brought about, has been the subject of many studies. And yet, the extent to which these industries were interdependent is often downplayed or overlooked. Looking more closely at the history of the Zambian and Katangese Copperbelts, one can see that, despite their separateness, there was interplay between them. During the British South Africa Company rule of Rhodesia (1899-1924), Northern Rhodesia was developed as an important labour and food reserve for the Katangese mines. Following the onset of the Great Depression in the …

Fishing For A Hero, Simona Stancov '15 Apr 2013

Fishing For A Hero, Simona Stancov '15

2013 Spring Semester

On national holidays like Martin Luther King Day, Memorial Day, and Veterans Day, people all over the United States honor heroes who have protected their country and its residents. While some people receive public recognition for their deeds, others serve as heroes for just a few people. Regardless of their popularity, all heroes possess certain qualities that make them esteemed and respected. The coinage of the term “Hemingway code hero” supports this idea. The expression represents a character in one of Ernest Hemingway’s works that personifies values like bravery, honor, and perseverance and maintains poise in the face of overwhelming …

The Mask Of The 'American Dream', Saraswathi Nookala '15 Apr 2013

The Mask Of The 'American Dream', Saraswathi Nookala '15

2013 Spring Semester

F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby and Edgar Lee Masters’ Spoon River Anthology are heralded as some of the greatest insights into human nature in American literature. Both authors ask the reader to scrutinize the actions and emotions of the characters in their books to understand the true meaning behind their double-sided statements. From analyzing the characters of Tom and Daisy Buchanan and Lambert Hutchins, the reader can conclude that although they have the inordinate amount of wealth everybody in America works toward, they are dissatisfied, and use their money and aristocratic position to project the exterior of contentment. Fitzgerald …

The Marriage Of Science And Religion, Saurabh Kumar '14 Apr 2013

The Marriage Of Science And Religion, Saurabh Kumar '14

2013 Spring Semester

At the end of A Canticle for Leibowitz, written by Walter M. Miller, Jr., the dropping of Lucifer and the resulting repetition of past destruction displays that there is an inherent flaw in the book’s futuristic society. The technological and scientific revival of a world that once repudiated knowledge is remarkable. However, the divergence of science and religion has caused humanity to use the power that comes with knowledge as irresponsibly as it did in the Flame Deluge. Mendelsohn states that, in speculative fiction, “religion is repeatedly depicted as dangerous, diverging humans from the path of reason and …

Revision And Rewriting, Theory Of Knowledge, Grade 11-12, John D. Miles, Victoria Putnam, Candice Cliff

Arthur Vining Davis High Impact Fellows Projects

This project takes into consideration something that high school writers often overlook—revision and rewriting. We visited the classroom on three occasions to lead different kinds of revision workshops. Victoria led workshop one that focused on structure at the thesis and paragraph level. The second workshop was developed using some specific methods from Dr. Miles. We also took time to individually help students discuss structure on the larger scale and how to make that structure useful at the level of argumentation. The third visit was for individual and group conferences with students. Tori also took the role of mentor for two …

Censorship And Fahrenheit 451, Natalie S. Grinnell, Michelle Stinson, Susan Miles

Arthur Vining Davis High Impact Fellows Projects

The goal of this project was to apply the censorship found in Fahrenheit 451 to other situations present in different areas of “the real world”. The students, after doing so, would then create a video of images and their voice, discussing themes of Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451and how it’s used in other areas outside of the book. The purpose is to have students use analysis in literature and applying it in different areas as well as to do so in a different way other than through writing. By using the video software, they are changing the way that traditional …

¡Hablemos Con Más Fluidez! Increasing Oral Proficiency, Begona Caballero-Garcia, Benjamin Green, Lindsay Knox

Arthur Vining Davis High Impact Fellows Projects

Students that study a foreign language in high school generally graduate with a solid base in reading and writing the language; however, speaking it remains a struggle. This project was designed to develop a series of activities and a framework on which future activities can be based. The activities are meant to engage students and help them practice speaking so as to increase their oral proficiency. By doing such activities two or three times a week, students can become more accustomed to speaking a foreign language and will gain confidence. They will also have practice using vocabulary relevant to the …

Moses, The Golden Calf, And False Images Of The True God, Rolf A. Jacobson

Faculty Publications

In Exod 32, the people demanded of Moses, “Make gods for us.” Or did they say, “Make us a god”? Translations differ. In this article, Jacobson argues for the latter, that is, that the issue is not more than one god but a false image of the true God—a sin God’s people continue to perpetuate today.

Tuzina, Tradition, And Therapy: A Case Study Of Dance/Movement Therapy In Post-Conflict Northern Uganda, Kateashley Clarke Apr 2013

Tuzina, Tradition, And Therapy: A Case Study Of Dance/Movement Therapy In Post-Conflict Northern Uganda, Kateashley Clarke

African & African American Studies Senior Theses

Despite great advancement in recent decades, rehabilitation resources for post-conflict communities are often lacking within the humanitarian field. Antonio Donini (2010, p. S233) argues that because humanitarianism is self-defined by those who practice it with little or no consideration for alternative approaches, reinventing a globally accepted notion of 'humanitarianism' is a difficult task. Post-conflict rehabilitation is one of the fields most affected by this 'particularistic' style of humanitarian action, with Western-influenced techniques dominating the spectrum. According to Peter Salama (2004, p. 1810), though mental health is increasingly discussed in policy and research forums as an essential component of emergency programs, …
