A Relationship Of Parts, Jacob Francois Apr 2013

A Relationship Of Parts, Jacob Francois

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

Through their actions these sculptures allude to our own bodies. The viewer having never seen such an object, its components take on names: lungs, mouth, appendages, or ribs. Our perception of the object shifts to somewhere between what we are and what it is. This shift in perception allows the viewers to project self upon these sculptures. It is not the physical likeness that we identify with, but their actions. Unlike mechanical tools, these objects serve no purpose. If they were accomplishing a task they would only be machines. The function only serves their existence.

The pumps and valves of …

Religion And Jane Eyre, Bradley Kime, Paul Kerry Apr 2013

Religion And Jane Eyre, Bradley Kime, Paul Kerry

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Modern readers might be surprised to learn that the 1847 publication of Jane Eyre caused an uproar. Plenty of critics praised the novel’s author, but many of the loudest voices were shocked by its content. In a satirical essay the next year, Edwin Whipple surveyed the literary scene: England and the United States, he wrote, were “not many months ago . . . visited by a distressing mental epidemic, passing under the name of the ‘Jane Eyre Fever,’” which produced a widespread fervor of “moral and religious indignation.”1 Among other censures, The Christian Remembrancer had declared of the novel …

Gauchos, Charruas, And The Hombre Nuevo: Redefining Masculinity Through Revolution In Argentina And Uruguay, 1959- 1983, Robert Christensen, Dr. Jeffrey Shumway Apr 2013

Gauchos, Charruas, And The Hombre Nuevo: Redefining Masculinity Through Revolution In Argentina And Uruguay, 1959- 1983, Robert Christensen, Dr. Jeffrey Shumway

Journal of Undergraduate Research

One of the least studied aspects of the Cold War in Latin America has been the complex relationships between guerrilla organizations. The project I undertook aimed to begin a dialogue on the interchange of ideas that took place, focusing on how that was expressed through the masculinity of the mostly male combatants. After a careful study of available documents, this proved unsuccessful. Simply put, current archival sources do not provide a sufficient body of material for quantitative study. I instead made use of my time in the archives to assemble a detailed case study of one of the most important …

Maintaining German Identity In Namibia, Nanci Johnson, Dr. Mark Choate Apr 2013

Maintaining German Identity In Namibia, Nanci Johnson, Dr. Mark Choate

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Research in the National Archives of Namibia started out very slowly. I arrived in Windhoek and met all sorts of challenges that I thought I had prepared for. I experienced an attempt at ATM theft against me and then needed to relocate to another guest house for security reasons. On the first day I had planned to do research, the government had shut down the library for water supply issues. Missing an entire day in the archives was difficult to recover from, especially since once I made it in the next day, I met all sorts of difficulties from the …

Effect Of Racial Socialization And Racial Identity In Adolescent African American Males On Academic Achievement, Rasheema Pitt

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This study examined possible influences of racial socialization and racial identity in minority’s academic achievement. Qualitative data sources (in-depth, personal interviews, focus groups, and a survey) were collected from 10 minority students and 8 administrators. In addition, a quantitative survey was used to supplement qualitative data. The researcher established her own set of questions for the interviews and focus groups. The pre-established measures used were the Does Your School Have High Expectations for All Students survey and the School Climate survey.

Thematic and theoretical analyses procedures were used to identify emerging themes and patterns, with particular attention to what minority …

Death Became Them: The Defeminization Of The American Death Culture, 1609–1899, Briony D. Zlomke Apr 2013

Death Became Them: The Defeminization Of The American Death Culture, 1609–1899, Briony D. Zlomke

Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Focusing specifically on the years 1609 to 1899 in the United States, this thesis examines how middle-class women initially controlled the economy of preparing the dead in pre-industrialized America and lost their positions as death transitioned from a community-based event to an occurrence from which one could profit. In this new economy, men dominated the capitalist-driven funeral parlors and undertaker services. The changing ideology about white middle-class women’s proper places in society and the displacement of women in the “death trade” with the advent of the funeral director exacerbated this decline of a once female-defined practice. These changes dramatically altered …

The Role Of Sympathy In Henry V'S Rhetoric, Kaylee Ficklin Apr 2013

The Role Of Sympathy In Henry V'S Rhetoric, Kaylee Ficklin

Student Works

In Shakespeare's Henry V, Henry is often seen as a manipulative figure who uses his powerful rhetoric in order to accomplish a self-serving political agenda. Arguably, Henry's greatest power is his rhetoric, and critics often cite this as his most manipulative tool-the means though which he accomplishes his own selfish desires. Rather than praising his rhetorical abilities, critics question Henry's motives and point to his rhetoric as the proof of his manipulation. However, "The Role of Sympathy in Henry V's Rhetoric" provides a different view of Henry. I argue that because Adam Smith's concept of sympathy contributes a great deal …

"'More Safe I Sing With Mortal Voice': The Bard, The Reader, And The Problematics Of Creation In Paradise Lost", Benjamin Moran Apr 2013

"'More Safe I Sing With Mortal Voice': The Bard, The Reader, And The Problematics Of Creation In Paradise Lost", Benjamin Moran

Honors Theses

For the first three centuries following its initial publication in 1667, John Milton's epic poem Paradise Lost was understood by its critics the epitome of stateliness, a poem brimming with grandeur, and above all, the product of a writer certain about his poetic skills and his theodical mission. Joseph Addison, one of the poem's earliest and most influential critics, summarizes this orthodoxy when he wrote that readers find in Paradise Lost "all the Greatness of Plan, Regularity of Design, and masterly Beauties which we discover in Homer and Virgil." In this essay, I directly and indirectly address Addison's argument as …

Community, Power, And Memory In Díaz Ordaz's Mexico: The 1968 Lynching In San Miguel Canoa, Puebla, Kevin M. Chrisman Apr 2013

Community, Power, And Memory In Díaz Ordaz's Mexico: The 1968 Lynching In San Miguel Canoa, Puebla, Kevin M. Chrisman

Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

On September 14th, 1968, approximately 1,000 enraged inhabitants wielding assorted makeshift weapons formed a lynch mob that brutally murdered four people and injured three others in San Miguel Canoa, Mexico. According to the generally accepted account, Canoa’s inhabitants feared that recently-arrived Universidad Autónoma de Puebla employees, in town on a weekend mountain-climbing expedition, were in actuality communist agitators threatening the town’s social order. The lynching in Canoa received limited press coverage and was subsequently overshadowed by the much larger government orchestrated Tlatelolco massacre that occurred in Mexico City, on October 2, 1968. While Tlatelolco remains an important historic event from …

Hans Von Seeckt: Reformer Of The Reichswehr, Aaron Miller Apr 2013

Hans Von Seeckt: Reformer Of The Reichswehr, Aaron Miller

Honors Theses

During the Great War, armies saw the transition from mobile war to static war. This resulted in an astronomical death toll and a war of attrition. When the war was over, the Allied Powers wrote the Treaty of Versailles with the hope of dismantling the German military to such a degree that Germany would never again be able to threaten the world. Despite these restrictions, the German army during the Weimar Republic (the Reichswehr) sought to rebuild its fame and power in Europe. In this process, General Hans von Seeckt, the Commander-in-Chief of the Reichswehr, emerged as a …

A Study Of The Musical Culture Of The Algonquin Indigenous Peoples Of North America, Corbin Clark Apr 2013

A Study Of The Musical Culture Of The Algonquin Indigenous Peoples Of North America, Corbin Clark

Senior Honors Theses

The study of the music of the indigenous peoples of North America has been a topic of research since the late nineteenth century. These studies have mainly focused on the American Indians that lived west of the Mississippi. The Native American groups that lived on the eastern border of North America, known as the Eastern Woodland American Indians, have received much less attention than these other groups. This project focuses on one of the groups associated with the Eastern Woodland tribes, the Algonquins. The purpose of this study is to research their musical culture by focusing on the musical instruments …

Protest And The Pri: Examining Us-Mexican Relations, 1968-1971, Jacob Glenn, Dr. Andrews Johns

Journal of Undergraduate Research

A green flare shot up in the air, lighting the sky. A red flare shortly followed. As the surprised crowd looked up, “a hail of bullets” turned a peaceful student protest into a massacre at Tlatelolco.

Family And Principle: The Blood And Iron Of The Empress Frederick, Aileen Christensen, Paul Kerry Apr 2013

Family And Principle: The Blood And Iron Of The Empress Frederick, Aileen Christensen, Paul Kerry

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The Empress Frederick was a remarkably intelligent woman, who uniquely responded to her parents educational system and ideas, making her the bright hope for the future generation, particularly for the future of Prussia. Her lofty English ideals, however, led her into conflict and defeat at the hands of Otto von Bismarck. The core of the contrast between the Empress Frederick’s and Prince Bismarck’s convictions are best expressed by Vicky (the Empress) herself: “What has been brought about with blood and iron could have been achieved by moral conquests.” Bismarck’s commanding vision of unification through blood and iron is fairly concrete …

Healing The Wounds Of Exile: A Canadian Exile Community 40 Years After Flight From Their Chilean Homeland, Michael Hoopes, Dr. Evan Ward Apr 2013

Healing The Wounds Of Exile: A Canadian Exile Community 40 Years After Flight From Their Chilean Homeland, Michael Hoopes, Dr. Evan Ward

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The result of my research among the Vancouver, Canada Chilean exile community was overall a positive, more concrete understanding of the mindset of the community, though certain difficulties relating to my inexperience have rendered the data I collected somewhat useless. I entered seeking to more clearly understand the process of healing undergone by Chilean exiles still residing in Canada, as I have noticed a significant lack of exile scholarship that deals with the last twenty years of exile. Since these exiles were forced from Chile by the totalitarian dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet in the 1970s, I entered my research …

Mapping The Mediterranean: Bartolommeo Da Li Sonetti And The Isolario Tradition, Kelly Zacovic Apr 2013

Mapping The Mediterranean: Bartolommeo Da Li Sonetti And The Isolario Tradition, Kelly Zacovic

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis provides a detailed analysis of an Isolario, or a printed book of maps of the Aegean Islands, created in 1485 by an anonymous author called Bartolommeo da li Sonetti. Through a thorough analysis of the material properties and content of the book, this thesis seeks to revise previous scholarly interpretations of this long under-studied work of cartography. Examination of five extant copies of the 1485 Isolario and the alterations made to the pages by their owners reveals much about how the volume was consumed, read and utilized in fifteenth and sixteenth century. In opposition to previous conceptions of …
