Don Quijote A Través De La Literatura Infantil/Don Quijote Through Children’S Literature, Elizabeth Exo, Carolyn Nadeau, Faculty Advisor Apr 2013

Don Quijote A Través De La Literatura Infantil/Don Quijote Through Children’S Literature, Elizabeth Exo, Carolyn Nadeau, Faculty Advisor

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

The novel Don Quijote de la Mancha is a classic known throughout the centuries and has left behind such a legacy that no one can deny its importance in the world of literature. However, young readers are unable to immerse themselves in this classic unless through an adapted version of the original novel. Through an analysis of various children’s adaptations of Don Quijote de la Mancha, this investigation suggests that the most important themes of the novel, such as friendship, duality, and identity, are still preserved within the adaptations, although somewhat modified to reach a younger audience.

Proceed To Olympus: The Iconography Of The Return Of Hephaestus, Catherine Hensly Apr 2013

Proceed To Olympus: The Iconography Of The Return Of Hephaestus, Catherine Hensly

Hollins Student Conference (2012-2016)

The mythological story of Hephaestus’ return to Mount Olympus exists in fragmentary literary accounts which are augmented by a pictorial record. Working backward from Classical images of Hephaestus’ return, the François Vase manifests as the primary source of the depiction’s overall composition. Examination of sixty-three vases featuring the return as published in the Lexicon Iconographicum Mythologiae Classicae reveals certain themes cycling through over the course of the 6th and 5th centuries BCE. By creating a timeline of these images, deductive reasoning establishes the François Vase as the iconographic prototype. Later images expand or abbreviate its motifs as they simultaneously reflect …

Not So Doubtful: Traditions Of The Apostle Thomas From The Beginning Of The Common Era Through 600 Ce, Janna Strain, Kevin Sullivan, Faculty Advisor Apr 2013

Not So Doubtful: Traditions Of The Apostle Thomas From The Beginning Of The Common Era Through 600 Ce, Janna Strain, Kevin Sullivan, Faculty Advisor

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

Historically, Thomas has a rich identity. Much of the apocrypha was named for the “doubting” disciple, such as The Infancy Gospel of Thomas, The Book of Thomas the Contender, The Acts of the Apostle Thomas, and The Gospel of Thomas, yet these traditions do not address Thomas’s doubting story from The Gospel of John. In fact, Thomas becomes the favored disciple in The Book of Thomas the Contender and logion 13 of The Gospel of Thomas. In The Acts of the Apostle Thomas the disciple leaves Rome to evangelize in India where he is eventually martyred. Today, …

Vestal Virgins Of Rome: Images Of Power, Melissa Huang, Amanda Coles, Faculty Advisor Apr 2013

Vestal Virgins Of Rome: Images Of Power, Melissa Huang, Amanda Coles, Faculty Advisor

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

From humble beginnings, the Vestal Virgins were able to create a foothold in political life through the turbulence of the transition from Republic to Principate. In part due to the violent and perilous transition, the Vestal Virgins of Rome began to represent a sense of what it meant to be Roman. The manifestation of the symbolization of Rome gave the Vestals great power, which they expressed in political and social venues. In order to describe these expressions, this presentation explains the religious and social roles of the Vestals established before the Late Republic. This is necessary because most of the …

Binary Musical Bias In Irreguilar Meters, Akash Bhatia, Joseph Plazak, Faculty Advisor Apr 2013

Binary Musical Bias In Irreguilar Meters, Akash Bhatia, Joseph Plazak, Faculty Advisor

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

The rhythmic structures of Western art music tend to be highly regular. With regards to metrical organization (i.e. grouping of strong and weak beats), previous research by Huron (2006) indicates that binary (strong-weak) meters tend to be more prevalent than ternary (strong-weak-weak) meters. However, relatively little is known about other types of metrical organization, such as meters based on 5- or 7-beat patterns. Results are reported from a corpus study of 5- and 7-beat musical melodies. Five-beat metrical patterns were found to occur more frequently than meters with 7-beat patterns, χ2 (1, N = 144) = 30.25, p < 0.001, φ …

Promising Travels And Unfulfilled Dreams: A Comparison Of Of Mice And Men And El Ingenioso Hidalgo Don Quijote De La Mancha (Viajes Promotedores Y Sueños Incumplidos: Una Comparación De Of Mice And Men Y El Ingenioso Hidalgo Don Quijote De La Mancha), Scott Meyers, Carolyn Nadeau, Faculty Advisor

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

Arguably one of the most widely acclaimed literary masterpieces, it is no surprise that Miguel de Cervantes’s El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha left a cultural legacy that has influenced the work of authors, artists, and filmmakers across the globe. Whether intentional of John Steinbeck or not, analysis of his literary work Of Mice and Men reveals various parallels between the two novels that extend from the complicated, transformative relationship between the two travelling protagonists of each novel to the lack of emphasis on female characters. A thorough evaluation of quotations, character interactions, and recurring themes and motifs …

Symbolic Capital And The Performativity Of Authorship: The Construction And Commodification Of The Nineteenth-Century Authorial Celebrity, Whitney Helms Apr 2013

Symbolic Capital And The Performativity Of Authorship: The Construction And Commodification Of The Nineteenth-Century Authorial Celebrity, Whitney Helms

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Victorian and Antebellum writers were the first literary figures to construct and perform their authorship within the sphere of celebrity. Unlike their Romantic predecessors who endured fame as an unexpected consequence of their popularity, the Victorians and their contemporaries understood celebrity as a condition of authorship. This dissertation takes as its subject the origins and development of symbolic power for authors as it was expressed in the trappings of celebrity and mass culture and argues that authorship became no longer strictly a profession of writing, but rather a performative endeavor that could be presented through diverse commercial markets. Investigating the …

Linked To His Fellow Man Of Civilized Life: Washington Irving, The Transatlantic Native American, And Romantic Historiography In A History Of New York And The Sketchbook Of Geoffrey Crayon, Kara Rebecca Kemp

Theses and Dissertations

As representatives of "an earlier stage of civilization," Native Americans in early nineteenth-century literature were integral in conversations of race relations, cultural development, and anthropological strata. They were a baseline of humanity against which more "civilized" nations of the world marked their progress, determined the value of their own cultural advancements, and proclaimed their superiority (Flint 1). They were an object of continuing fascination for Americans and Britons seeking to reinvent themselves in the aftermath of war and revolution, but their image in these nations was used as a derogatory slur (Fulford and Hutchings 1; Flint 6--7). Suggesting that a …

The Visit, Jiordan Castle

Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD

I will be reading a creative essay constructed for Professor Ryan Van Meter's spring 2012 workshop in nonfiction. English Department Chair Dean Rader assisted me in getting my paper chosen for presentation (with a Q&A session) at the upcoming Sigma Tau Delta International Convention this month. The essay is about visiting my father in prison as a teenager and relates to race relations and our justice system in a personal, yet unsentimental way.

The Readability Of Historical And Modern Writing, Sophia Chong Apr 2013

The Readability Of Historical And Modern Writing, Sophia Chong

Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD

This research explores the difference in readability of historical and modern writing. The goal of this project is to determine if modern academic rhetoric is easier to comprehend than a historical primary source about the same topic. This has been done using a variety of quantitative methods widely used to analyze the accessibility of writings to compare sections of “The Confederate Reader” by Richard B. Harwell. Upon examination, it can be seen that despite the widely perceived convenience in comprehending modern writing that in fact, a primary Civil War period source is more readable than its current day academic counterpart.

Exploring The Problem We All Live With: The Motivation And Ambition Behind Norman Rockwell’S Civil Rights Depictions, Kelly Richman Apr 2013

Exploring The Problem We All Live With: The Motivation And Ambition Behind Norman Rockwell’S Civil Rights Depictions, Kelly Richman

Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD

Using Norman Rockwell’s The Problem We All Live With (1964) a Civil Rights-era depiction of the integration of black and white students in 1960, I argue that Rockwell chose to portray Civil Rights themes in order to make an altruistic plea for equality. To demonstrate my claim, I have researched academic sources, journal articles that explore Rockwell’s views and painterly approach to race, and documents of important political events of the Civil Rights Movement. Through this research, I use textual evidence to conclude that Norman Rockwell was genuinely committed to promoting Civil Rights in his work.

Spilling Over: A Collection Of Short Stories, Jaleesa M. Watkins Apr 2013

Spilling Over: A Collection Of Short Stories, Jaleesa M. Watkins

Theses & Honors Papers

This thesis, Spilling Over: A Collection of Short Stories, explores the concept of finding your place in the world. Nowhere is an individual more tested in discovering their own identity, their purpose, their place, than in direct relation to familial influence. In this collection, this idea of influence and growth into an individual, translates into a focus on the changing interactions in a family unit.

My characters are individuals in the midst of acknowledging a change in their family dynamics. These changes are sometimes unavoidable, such as reactions to death, disease, pregnancy, or divorce, which cause immediate changes within a …
