Forming A New Art In The Pacific Northwest: Studio Glass In The Puget Sound Region, 1970-2003, Marianne Ryder Jun 2013

Forming A New Art In The Pacific Northwest: Studio Glass In The Puget Sound Region, 1970-2003, Marianne Ryder

Dissertations and Theses

The studio glass movement first arose in the United States in the early 1950s, and was characterized by practitioners who wanted to divorce glass from its industrial associations and promote it as a fine arts medium. This movement began in a few cities in the eastern part of the country, and in Los Angeles, but gradually emerged as an art form strongly associated with the city of Seattle and the Puget Sound region. This research studies the emergence and growth of the studio glass movement in the Puget Sound region from 1970 to 2003. It examines how glass artists and …

Effects Of Western Imposition And Climate Change Upon The Koyukon Environmental Identity, Sonja Meintsma Jun 2013

Effects Of Western Imposition And Climate Change Upon The Koyukon Environmental Identity, Sonja Meintsma

The Macalester Review

This paper demonstrates the relationship between the natural environment and the Koyukon Athabaskan Indians that live in Northwestern Alaska. The identity of the Koyukon Indian people derives from the land upon which they survive. This identity is defined through hunting and by the notion of reciprocity between animals, the environment, and human beings. This paper argues that this “environmental identity” has been impacted largely by imposition from the West and is continually threatened by adverse consequences of climate change. These changes will have a profound effect upon the Koyukon people and their environmental identity. It is too early to estimate …

The Kolla Of Argentina: Neoliberal Trends And The Promise Of Law In The Process Of Reframing, Claiming And Maintaining Land Rights, Courtney C. Nussbaumer Jun 2013

The Kolla Of Argentina: Neoliberal Trends And The Promise Of Law In The Process Of Reframing, Claiming And Maintaining Land Rights, Courtney C. Nussbaumer

The Macalester Review

Indigenous groups around the world have faced countless hardships—the Kolla of northwestern Argentina are no exception. While there is no doubt that the Kolla are a minority group both oppressed and marginalized, they have only recently begun to reconceptualize themselves as indigenous. Kolla identity struggles coupled with larger Latin American trends explained below make the Kolla an excellent case study to conceptualize the larger struggle between neoliberal governments and indigenous employment of international legal norms. Processes of legal globalization have led to the increasing codification of the collective rights of indigenous peoples in Latin America. This can be seen in …

Science Fiction And The Myth Of Trajectory Evolution, Jocelyn D. Pickreign Jun 2013

Science Fiction And The Myth Of Trajectory Evolution, Jocelyn D. Pickreign

The Macalester Review

Stephen Jay Gould first proposed the idea of “iconographies of progress.” Today, one of the most prominent forms of progress iconography is the science fiction story. Science fiction as a genre frequently portrays evolution as a linear trajectory of increasing complexity, and in doing so, furthers a worldview that is not unlike the pre-Darwin understanding of human beings as both the center and the pinnacle of the natural world.

Developing Interactive Learning Environments To Promote Scaffolding And Reflection: A Look At The Digital Process Book For Design Studio Education And Comparisons To K12 Science Education Applications, Lori Brunner Stone, Abigail Lundquist, Stefan Ganchev

Learn X Design Conference Series

The purpose of this paper is to describe the development and rationale for the design of the Digital Process Book (DPB) learning tool for design education at the University level and discuss the similarities with applications to learning tools in K12 science education. The DPB is an interactive learning environment that is intended to promote reflection throughout a student’s design process, as well as integrate important scaffolding elements in the system that supplements the traditional inperson contact between a student and an instructor. It is based on tenets of Cognitive Load Theory, which argues that learners are not able to …

In February 1843, Antoine Gardelaud, a former public servant, submitted to the General Department of Print Shops and Bookstores (in the Ministry of the Interior) an intent to publish a monthly periodical called La Chaire catholique (Catholic pulpit).i He named himself as sole owner and Caubet as printer. As its name indicated, this periodical centered on preaching and promised to publish good Catholic sermons from all over France and Rome.

Making, Using And Interpreting Design Probes: How Subjective Is Participation?, Cara Broadley, Marianne Mcara Jun 2013

Making, Using And Interpreting Design Probes: How Subjective Is Participation?, Cara Broadley, Marianne Mcara

Learn X Design Conference Series

The wealth of participatory methods in human-centred design adheres to the notion of a democratic process and solutions that respond to the experiences and needs of users and stakeholders. However, as human-centred design philosophies permeate the landscape of design education and research, the designer’s role as both an objective facilitator and creative decision-maker suggests their impact upon stages of data collection and analysis. This paper advocates tools and techniques to support design students in initiating user engagement and insight-gathering whilst simultaneously recognising and utilising their own subjective experiences and knowledge. Drawing comparisons between our practice-led masters and PhD research, we …

The Library of International Relations was established in 1932 on the basis of documents provided by the League of Nations Association. The original LIR was hosted in a room provided by the John Crerar Library, staffed by Miss Eloise G. ReQua, founder and first director of the Library of International Relations. Miss ReQua’s intent was to encourage the study of international affairs.

During the 1934 and 1935 seasons of the World’s Fair, the Library maintained an exhibit known as the Story Cove on the Enchanted Island, a reading-room, library, and storytelling center. …
