Inspiring And Investigating Imaginative Capability Of Design College Student, Hsiang-Tang Chang, Pei-Chin Hsieh, Tung-I Lin
Learn X Design Conference Series
One’s imaginative capability will influence his/her design idea and final product, therefore the imaginative capability is important to a designer. People always considered that the imaginative capability is natural endowment; however, the authors considered that it could be inspired by the family and school education. The purpose of this research was to find a feasible way to inspire students' imaginative capability, and investigate the relationship between the students' imaginative capability to their family education and school education respectively through a devised experimental teaching. For this purpose, some reasonable influential factors of imaginative capability were selected by references and experts’ suggestions, …

Another Future For Designers In America, Kate Catterall
Another Future For Designers In America, Kate Catterall
Learn X Design Conference Series
The rationale behind mass-industrialization, now normalized, is embodied uncritically in the practice of many new designers. What if the industrial past could be explored and experienced as a foreign territory, providing a vantage point from which to critically evaluate contemporary design practices and define new paths? Young American designers are searching for alternate roles, and ways to design and live. Many experiment with models from elsewhere, places where new futures are growing from useful pre-industrial remnants. America, a country synonymous with industrialization, has no such resources upon which to build new practices, and slowing while creating value through quality is …

Revisiting Ekphrasis: The Early Hermeneutic Phenomenology Of Paul Ricoeur., Noel Fitzpatrick
Conference Papers
Through revisiting the notion of the symbol and sign in the relatively early work of Paul Ricoeur it hoped to point to a yet unexplored element of his work in relation to Aesthetics and contemporary Critical Theory. This paper will focus on a particular point in the work of Paul Ricoeur, a point where the problematic of language begins to come to the fore within his structural phenomenology of the late 1950s and early 1960s. The publication of The Symbolism of Evil in 1960 represents a definite departure from the structural Phenomenology of his earlier works where the central concern …

Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This study researches the differences in pedagogical needs between learners of Spanish as a Foreign Language (FL learners) and learners of Spanish as a Heritage Language (HL learners) at the university level. By using the UNL Modern Languages and Literatures Department as an illustrative case and based on an analysis of the Heritage Language student profile in the context of the United States, this study seeks to explore arguments in favor of providing training for university-level instructors of Spanish that responds to the specific pedagogical needs of Heritage Language Learners.
The relevancy of this study is not only based on …

Pedagogy For Teaching Design – With An Emphasis On Sustainable Design, Stephanie Carleklev, Marie Sterte
Pedagogy For Teaching Design – With An Emphasis On Sustainable Design, Stephanie Carleklev, Marie Sterte
Learn X Design Conference Series
Teaching sustainability is not solely a question of providing relevant information; it is foremost about training students to meet the challenges of tomorrow. In design this can mean to shift the focus from material, form and function towards systems, correlation and time – a process supported both by how we teach as well as what we teach. But pedagogy still seems to be treated like a poor cousin to the more important design knowledge. This made us curious about the correlation between pedagogy and teaching design for sustainable change. By applying a study of Eilam and Trop (2011) onto the …

The Great Gatsby Unit
This exercise gives students further practice with both the skills of close reading and character analysis. In The Great Gatsby, readers are introduced to Nick Carraway by Nick Carraway, and many take his words as law. Yet there are also constant inklings that Nick may not be the most neutral of narrators after all. This exercise allows students to look closely at characters in the novel as they are introduced by Nick, and examine the divide between Carraway’s version of the character and the reader’s own impression. Students will only have the text, and their analysis, to guide them. …

Setting As Character, Tracy A. Townsend
Setting As Character, Tracy A. Townsend
The Short Story
This lesson uses Nathaniel Hawthorne’s short story “Young Goodman Brown” to explore tone and characterization in short fiction. It requires students to demonstrate an understanding of the role character plays in fiction and to use specific textual evidence to support a claim. The lesson can be completed in a single class period of fifty to seventy minutes and is suitable for grades 9-12.
