The Cultural Preservation Of Ecuador Through Art, Jason Harmon, Mark Graham Jun 2013

The Cultural Preservation Of Ecuador Through Art, Jason Harmon, Mark Graham

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The purpose of my project was to research the indigenous cultures of Ecuador through art (painting, drawing, and photography). My hope was to bring a lot of visual reference home, and to create an art show that would inform its viewer of the rich cultural diversity of some of the many indigenous cultures found in the diverse climates and regions of Ecuador. I started out hoping to help others understand these different cultures, their ways of life, and how they live, but after a two and a half week journey through the jungles, mountains, and rain forests of Ecuador, I …

The Garifuna: A Nation Within Nations, Benjamin Petersen, Dr. Jared Johnson Jun 2013

The Garifuna: A Nation Within Nations, Benjamin Petersen, Dr. Jared Johnson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The Garifuna are the descendents of West Africans brought to the Americas in the 1600s aboard slave ships. After a shipwreck in the Caribbean, they settled on the island of St. Vincent and mixed with the Carib Indians, creating a unique people and culture that thrived on spirituality, dance, music, language and tradition. Eventual land disputes with the British led to fierce battles, defeat and finally, deportation to the coast of Honduras. There, the Garifuna reestablished and adapted, eventually spreading along the coasts of present-day of Honduras, Belize, Guatemala and Nicaragua. Today, an estimated 300,000 Garifuna live in Central America …

Chinese Music Infield Study: Insights And Personal Experiences From Attending The Tianjin Music Conservatory, Robert Willes, Kory Katseanes

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My Chinese music study experience began with touring China with the BYU Chamber Orchestra in April of 2011. This tour was a very rich and unique two weeks filled with some of the most beautiful sights in Asia. The Great Wall of China, The Forbidden City, the structures and vastness of the palace left me with a sense of awe at the historical depth and remarkable achievements of the ancient Chinese culture. We performed concerts in Shanghai, Tianjin, Hangzhou, Guangzhou, and Beijing and were very warmly received in all of the venues.

The Music Within Urban Noise, Todd Kitchen, Dr. Steven Ricks Jun 2013

The Music Within Urban Noise, Todd Kitchen, Dr. Steven Ricks

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My goal was to expose the musicality inherent in urban environments through a musical composition involving sound recordings made in New York City. Specifically, I used the sophisticated software available to me in the BYU Electronic Music Studio to identify the specific frequencies (pitches) and rhythmic patterns found in my field recordings. Afterwards I would present my findings with electronics and live instruments in a way that exposed these musical traits present in my recordings.

Alabaster Sky: Writing For The Web, Graham Ward, Dr. Eric Samuelsen Jun 2013

Alabaster Sky: Writing For The Web, Graham Ward, Dr. Eric Samuelsen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Writing the web series Alabaster Sky was a process of daily adaptation. From viewing every web series and documentary-style movie we could get our hands on, to inventing a method of structuring serial fiction that’s non-linear, this project tested us daily. The success of the production itself is yet to be determined, but the writing process can be considered successful in its attempt to test the limits of new media. The most significant area of work in the writing process was marrying the series’ documentary style with a non-linear structure.

Recreating The Past, An Historical Costume Reproduction: Marilla Lucretia Johnson Miller Daniels, Melissa Deguire, Mary Farahnakian

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My project was to research and recreate a dress worn by Marilla Lucretia Johnson Miller Daniels. She helped her husband, William Miller, who is sometimes referred to as a “Bogus Brigham”1 and her father, Aaron Johnson, to found the city of Springville and get the education system in Provo started. Having been a teacher in Nauvoo and in the LDS Church (Primary for ten years and Sunday School for twenty), she supported the work of her first husband to establish education in Provo, and by 1857 there was a school in every district2. She also was an …

Dramautism: How Drama Pedagogy Informs The Process Of Working With Those With Autism, Anna Hargadon, Julia Ashworth Jun 2013

Dramautism: How Drama Pedagogy Informs The Process Of Working With Those With Autism, Anna Hargadon, Julia Ashworth

Journal of Undergraduate Research

What started out as a research project turned into a delightful creative project. Because there weren’t any research professors on campus that specialized in the field of “Drama with People with Autism,” the research side of the project wasn’t able to move forward. My mentor professor was a theatre educator, but had no experience with research.

There Is Still Time: Contingency And History, John M. Rudy Jun 2013

There Is Still Time: Contingency And History, John M. Rudy

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public

"...and it's all in the balance, it hasn't happened yet, it hasn't even begun yet, it not only hasn't begun yet but there is still time for it not to begin against that position and those circumstances which made more men than Garnett and Kemper and Armistead and Wilcox look grave..."

William Faulkner's Intruder in the Dust has that beautifully evocative passage that anyone worth their salt contemplating a Pickett's Charge program has considered including in their ebb and flow. Faulkner was a master of language, and his passage about, "every Southern boy fourteen years old," is a particularly artful. …

Provo’S Ghost Town, Bryan Hutchison, Peter Everett Jun 2013

Provo’S Ghost Town, Bryan Hutchison, Peter Everett

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Provo’s Ghost Town project has been a constant developing project over the past year. It began with what I had originally proposed for the ORCA Grant—to do research on houses and to use that information to create a body of artwork dealing with buildings that have been torn down in Provo, and hold a show exhibiting the artwork. A body of artwork has been made, but is still in progress. There are 15 finished images to date made, with enough materials gathered to make another 15 the upcoming semester at the same size, and enough photographs collected through research to …

Original Composition For The Byu Symphonic Band, Garrett Breeze, Dr. Kirt Saville Jun 2013

Original Composition For The Byu Symphonic Band, Garrett Breeze, Dr. Kirt Saville

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The goal of this project was to gain hands on experience by composing an original piece for the BYU Symphonic Band. There are currently no composition courses taught at BYU focusing on Concert Band literature; and because of the large volume of existing work by established, respected composers, and the small space available on a concert program, opportunities for a young composer to have his work read of performed by a large ensemble such as the Symphonic Band are extremely limited. This makes it difficult to really learn the craft of writing for such a large ensemble because in music …

An Exploration In New Media And Social Marketing, David Jon Banks, Jeff Parkin Jun 2013

An Exploration In New Media And Social Marketing, David Jon Banks, Jeff Parkin

Journal of Undergraduate Research

This project set out to explore, identify, and harness strategy and implementation of social marketing for low-budget and student film online distribution. Taking from previous examples and small-scale testing, a lot has been learned. The biggest lesson learned? Just how much my student colleagues and I underestimated the vastness of social marketing. The growing world of social media has been constantly expanding, and the rules change every day. As such, our project has had to adapt, and deadlines were pushed back, to accommodate for all of the new information we have gathered.

Branded: The Sister Arts Of Rhetoric And Design, Susanna Kelly Engbers Jun 2013

Branded: The Sister Arts Of Rhetoric And Design, Susanna Kelly Engbers

Learn X Design Conference Series

As a professor of rhetoric at an art and design college in the United States, I am keenly interested in philosophies of design education and their relationships to philosophies of rhetorical education. Clearly teachers of rhetoric and of design have much to learn from one another, yet we rarely interact. One way in which design and rhetoric should be informing one another is through the related concepts of branding, familiar to designers; and ethos, well-known to rhetoricians. I know from faculty colleagues in design how important branding is in design curricula. Students learn the value, as Richard Buchanan puts it, …

In Defense Of Feminists Who Like Fashion, Margarita C. Delgado Jun 2013

In Defense Of Feminists Who Like Fashion, Margarita C. Delgado

SURGE

I’m sitting on the downtown R train one night in Manhattan, a copy of Vogue resting on my crossed legs. It is late and I am clearly unwinding peacefully as I thumb through page after glamorous page of my magazine. The train stops at Prince Street and there’s the usual flux of people in and out. Those left inside settle as the train pulls out of the station.

“Ugh. Fashion is stupid,” remarks one young man to another, both of whom are sitting diagonally from me and well within earshot. He’s watching me ignore him as I continue enjoying my …
