Integrating Multidisciplinary Collaboration In Undergraduate Design Education: Too Many Cooks Spoil The Broth?, Katja Fleischmann Jun 2013

Integrating Multidisciplinary Collaboration In Undergraduate Design Education: Too Many Cooks Spoil The Broth?, Katja Fleischmann

Learn X Design Conference Series

Employability studies continue to highlight the fact that digital media design graduates may not be sufficiently prepared to bridge the gap between university and industry. In response, an alternative learning and teaching approach for digital media design education, the POOL Model framework, was developed and subsequently trialled at an Australian university. A broad underpinning strategy of the framework is to reflect industry practice through implementing workplace realities such as multidisciplinary teamwork. Introducing multidisciplinary collaborative practice into design education is identified as necessary; however, exactly how these collaborations can be managed at an undergraduate level is less well defined. This paper …

Style, Discourse, And The Completion Of The Vernacular Style In Modern Japanese Literature, Jacob Zan Adachi Lee Jun 2013

Style, Discourse, And The Completion Of The Vernacular Style In Modern Japanese Literature, Jacob Zan Adachi Lee

Theses and Dissertations

Many histories of modern Japanese literature see the "completion" of the modern vernacular style in the writings of Shiga Naoya (1883--1971), Mushakōji Saneatsu (1885--1976) and Takamura Kōtarō (1883--1956). Why and how this critical-historical perception of stylistic normalcy arose and still continues is better understood, I propose, through a close reading of key texts that identifies instances and patterns of creative manipulation of-as opposed to mere determination by or complicity with-certain philosophical, social, and historical discourses. How this creative manipulation plays out varies in prose and poetry and from text to text. In Mushakōji's Omedetaki hito (1911; The Simpleton), temporal and generic …

Lessons In Immorality: Mishima's Masterpiece Of Humor And Social Satire, Nathaniel Peter Bond Jun 2013

Lessons In Immorality: Mishima's Masterpiece Of Humor And Social Satire, Nathaniel Peter Bond

Dissertations and Theses

From 1958 to 1959, Mishima Yukio published a series of satirical essays titled Lessons in Immorality, in the magazine Weekly Morningstar. Lessons in Immorality was made into a television series, a stage play, and a film.

Famous in the West for writing serious novels, Mishima's work as a humor writer is largely unknown. In these essays Mishima writes in a very comic style, making liberal use of hyperbole, burlesque, and travesty, in order to parody and satirize contemporary Japanese morality. Mishima uses humor to create a world in which Mishima Yukio, iconoclastic author and pop-culture figure, is an arbiter of …

Design As A Second Language. Design As A Multicultural-Multidisciplinary Space Of Integration: Challenges And Advantages Of Introducing Design To Non-Design Students, In A Second Language, In A New Cultural Context, Carlos A. Fiorentino, Andrew Van Der Ree, Lyubava Fartushenko

Learn X Design Conference Series

Teaching design to design-illiterate students is usually a common case for every first year class instructor at any design program. In addition to this, a particular combination of extra challenges makes Design Fundamentals at -the University of Alberta- a very special spot to learn and teach design. Most sections of this class are open to students from many other fields and levels, from psychology to engineering, and from first year students to senior students. Masters students, who usually come from various countries, are often appointed as teaching assistants as part of the graduate program experience. Some of them choose to …

Making Scholarship: Describing The Field Of Inquiry And The Research Approach, Laila Belinda Fauske Jun 2013

Making Scholarship: Describing The Field Of Inquiry And The Research Approach, Laila Belinda Fauske

Learn X Design Conference Series

The project described in this paper is an upcoming postdoctoral project with the aim to explore the concepts of ‘making scholarship’ and ‘doctorateness’ in the practice-based field of Art and design education. This paper will describe the field of inquiry and elaborate on self-ethnography as a research approach. Self-ethnography can be an alternative when a researcher aims to study a professional community to which he or she is already a member. ‘Doctorateness’ is a central concept in organised research education, and even though the term has its origins in the discipline-based fields of research, the concept is of great importance …

The Paradox Of Feeling Invisible Yet Overly-Visible, Hershel Genfer Jun 2013

The Paradox Of Feeling Invisible Yet Overly-Visible, Hershel Genfer

SURGE

A personal reflection on being transgender at Gettysburg College:

When I came out to myself, my friends, and Gettysburg’s ALLies Club as transgender in the spring of 2012, I was one of only a very small handful of out trans* students on campus. There were so few of us, in fact, that you could probably count us on the fingers of one hand, and the issues surrounding the “T” in “LGBT,” while important, seemed to affect other people in other places rather than the people in our own community. Japan Encounters The Russian “Barbarians” The Iwakura Mission’S Visit To Saint Petersburg, 1873, Galina Chenina, Dr. Aaron Skabelund

Journal of Undergraduate Research

As a Japanese history major in Russia prior to transferring to BYU, I focused my study and research on mid-nineteenth and twentieth century Japan. My training provided me with a theoretical understanding and the methodology to conduct research using primary and secondary sources in Russian, Japanese, and English. Last year, I was working on a research project regarding the visit of the Iwakura Mission to St. Petersburg in 1873.

Your Sons And Your Daughters Shall Prophesy...Your Young Men Shall See Visions: The Role Of Youth In The Second Great Awakening, 1800-1850, Trevor Jason Wright Jun 2013

Your Sons And Your Daughters Shall Prophesy...Your Young Men Shall See Visions: The Role Of Youth In The Second Great Awakening, 1800-1850, Trevor Jason Wright

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis contends that youth from age twelve to twenty-five played a pivotal role in the revivals of the Second Great Awakening in New York and New England. Rather than merely being passive onlookers in these religious renewals, the youth were active participants, influencing the frequency, spread, and intensity of the Christian revivals. Relying heavily upon personal accounts written by youth and revival records from various denominations, this work examines adolescent religious experiences during the first half of the nineteenth century. Chapter 1 explores the impact parents had on youth religiosity, showing how the teaching and examples they saw in …

I believe the best documentary photographs are those that evoke emotion and motivate people to take action. Although the Face of Autism project has only been displayed a few times so far, it has done both of these things. Furthermore, a website is currently being created to display the photographs and I am working on displaying the prints in more public galleries in the future.

Perception Of Forgery According To The Role Of Art, Courtney Mcwhorter, Dr. Martha Peacock Jun 2013

Perception Of Forgery According To The Role Of Art, Courtney Mcwhorter, Dr. Martha Peacock

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Originally, when I set out to begin this project my intent was to show ‘Art Forgery as an Art Form’, as the title of this project was originally called. However, the intent of my research was very broad, as I intended to discuss forgery’s role, its creation, the forger, and the merits of forgery. I soon realized that there was too much that needed to be said. Therefore, I decided to concentrate my efforts on the role of forgery, or its perception within the art world. In my research, I began noticing that the reception of forgeries has changed over …

National Identity And Culture: Through Traditional Language And Music In Okinawa, Japan, Ryler Nielsen, Dr. Jeremy Grimshaw Jun 2013

National Identity And Culture: Through Traditional Language And Music In Okinawa, Japan, Ryler Nielsen, Dr. Jeremy Grimshaw

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Two of the most often used methods that we, as humans, use to identify with each other are language and music. The Omoro Soushi, compiled in the early 1600s, is a compilation of poems and songs in the Okinawan language that were used to create music. It shows that a relationship does exist between the language and the subsequently created music.

Albert: A Documentary Film, Dustin Hulet, Tom Lefler

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Two years ago, I came across an essay written by my great-grandfather, Albert Hulet. The short, two-page document, entitled “I Remember,” is a reflective piece written from a vantage point high in the Tetons. In the essay, Albert reflects as an old man, looking down the drainages surrounding him, describing the experiences he had in each canyon as a boy herding sheep in that area, and expounding on how those experiences shaped him into the man he became.

Small Utah Towns, Christine Armbruster, Dr. James Swensen Jun 2013

Small Utah Towns, Christine Armbruster, Dr. James Swensen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

While obtaining my Bachelor of Fine Art, I spent a lot of my time during those six years of school running away. First finding the need to get out of Provo, then Utah, and eventually America. It resulted in a lot of adventures, stories, and long drives. It was during these long drives that I consistently ran into each one of these small Utah towns, classically consisting of a corner store, a post office, and a child being pulled on a radio flyer. One after another after another. Slow down to 30 and watch the old signs from shops past …

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Exhibit A is an explanation in four parts, of my attempt at knowing more about the Populus Tremulus (Aspen Tree). Eighteen months ago my experiments started shallow by painting portraits of the tree as seen in “Level One”. After six months the results were not leading my beyond surface physicality so I decided to try science. I represented this period by a white board, “Level Two”, covered in with written information about the tree collected over the last year from books, lectures, articles, professionals, botany, and environmental literature classes.
