Most people desire to succeed. Even though every person may have a different standard of success, it is necessary to succeed in order to be satisfied with our lives. We also need to value our experiences. For example, a concept called the "10,000 hours rule" has been introduced in a book titled Outlier. According to this concept, anyone can excel at something if he or she chooses to spend 10,000 hours on it. Actually, one should not just spend this time but use it to be passionately and actively involved. The Beatles embodied such commitment. Before they became famous, they …

What Is Industrial Design? Providing A Guide For University Applicants, Michael Goatman, Louise Moody Jul 2013

What Is Industrial Design? Providing A Guide For University Applicants, Michael Goatman, Louise Moody

Learn X Design Conference Series

There are currently a wide range of Higher Education Industrial Design courses available in the UK. In the present era, a wider breadth of narrative has developed within the subject, and as a result the content of industrial design educational offerings varies considerably. The paper assesses the industry view of Industrial Design as a discipline from the perspective of those employing university graduates. These views illustrate a change in the discipline, and this is considered in respect to current education practice. The choice of entry courses for the student wishing to embark on a career in the subject has also …

The Politics Of The "New North": Putting History And Geography At Stake In Arctic Futures, Andrew T. Stuhl Jul 2013

The Politics Of The "New North": Putting History And Geography At Stake In Arctic Futures, Andrew T. Stuhl

Faculty Journal Articles

References to a “New North” have snowballed across popular media in the past

10 years. By invoking the phrase, scientists, policy analysts, journalists and others

draw attention to the collision of global warming and global investment in

the Arctic today and project a variety of futures for the region and the planet.

While changes are apparent, the trope of a “New North” is not new. Discourses

that appraised unfamiliar situations at the top of the world have recurred

throughout the twentieth century. They have also accompanied attempts to

cajole, conquer, civilize, consume, conserve and capitalize upon the far north.

Speaking For Himself: Odysseus And Rhetoric In Sophocles' Philoctetes, Christian Wiggo Axelgard Jul 2013

Speaking For Himself: Odysseus And Rhetoric In Sophocles' Philoctetes, Christian Wiggo Axelgard

Theses and Dissertations

In order to reconcile the deus ex machina at the end of Sophocles' Philoctetes with the actions of the rest of the play, this project analyzes the role of Odysseus within the play with special attention to rhetoric. By considering the character of Odysseus as a complex construct referencing both literary and historical contexts, this study suggests that Neoptolemus in fact errs in siding with Philoctetes to the degree that he does by the tragedy's end. The themes of the play involving Philoctetes and Neoptolemus then become warnings against inappropriate emotional responses, again consistent with Heracles' advice in the deus …

Cross-Cultural Design Attitude: Open-Ended Design Solution For Welcoming The Diversity, Elena Enrica Giunta, Agnese Rebaglio Jul 2013

Cross-Cultural Design Attitude: Open-Ended Design Solution For Welcoming The Diversity, Elena Enrica Giunta, Agnese Rebaglio

Learn X Design Conference Series

Italy draws lots of refugees from the Mediterranean regions: in 2010, Milan received more then 850 people in its welcomely Centres. Municipalities, citizens but also professionals must be involved in the collective answer to such a kind of phenomenon. The ephemeral nature of the settlement in the Centres, the precarious conditions of staying, as well as the variety of tenants’ identities (multi-ethnical and gender turns) shape a new research field of great, social, importance which challenges the designer to imagine new strategies and tactics for collective living. These reasons convinced a multi-disciplinary group (designers, social workers and environmental psychologists) to …

“A Great Weight At My Heart:” A Personal Reaction To Pickett’S Charge, Rebekah N. Oakes Jul 2013

“A Great Weight At My Heart:” A Personal Reaction To Pickett’S Charge, Rebekah N. Oakes

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

“When our great victory was just over the exultation of victory was so great that one didn’t think of our fearful losses, but now I can’t help feeling a great weight at my heart. Poor Henry Ropes was one of the dearest friends I ever had or expect to have. He was one of the purest-minded, noblest, most generous men I ever knew. His loss is terrible. His men actually wept when they showed me his body, even under the tremendous cannonade, a time when most soldiers see their comrades dying around them with indifference.”

When twenty-one year old Henry …

Murray, Richard C. Crepeau Jul 2013

Murray, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The words monumental, epic, unforgettable, and historic are thrown around with reckless abandon in our hyperbolic age that specializes in over-inflating the reality of mundane events. As a historian I am especially wary of the term “historic,” when describing a sports event. In the universe of high frequency television commentators, all of these words suffer from overuse.

From Tutor-Led To Student-Led Design Education: The Global Studio, Aysar Ghassan, Erik Bohemia Jul 2013

From Tutor-Led To Student-Led Design Education: The Global Studio, Aysar Ghassan, Erik Bohemia

Learn X Design Conference Series

“Tutor-led” design education has been argued to be a system where lecturers are at the centre of teaching & learning activities and where educators’ tastes strongly influence students’ outcomes. Design education has also been argued not to prepare graduates for working in highly complex professional capacities synonymous with the contemporary era. We argue the role of tutors in tutor-led design education to be a factor in this. The Global Studio runs Web 2.0 enabled industry sponsored international collaborations between students. One aim is to introduce learners to “complex project situations” and consequently to prepare them for contemporary working life. It …

Zofia Stryjeńska: Women In The Warsaw Town Square. Our Lady, Peasant Mother, Pagan Goddess, Katelyn Mckenzie Sheffield

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis I consider the unique position that Polish artist Zofia Stryjeńska (1891-1974) occupied during the interwar period. Lauded during her time as the most popular artist in Poland, the acceptance of Stryjeńska's female voice in representing a national vocabulary was unprecedented and deserves closer examination. I assert that Poland's history of oppression created a unique environment where women as archetypal figures often took on masculine roles. These 'transgressive types' were visible in the literature and art of the 19th and 20th centuries. Stryjeńska's art, as well as her behavior, capitalized on these transgressive traditions. Women played an important …

Social Network As A Tool To Develop Personas For User Research: An Exercise From Design Education, Koray Gelmez, Humanur Bagli

Learn X Design Conference Series

This study focuses on a brand new type of user research as a part of a design project conducted in 2012 Summer School Project Studio in the Department of Industrial Product Design at Istanbul Technical University (ITU), Turkey. Students are required to get information from an open Facebook profile by concentrating on its demographics (age, gender, and nationality), descriptive attributes, mottos, likes, dislikes, hates, beliefs, activities, work attitudes, holiday attitudes, socializations and favourite objects etc. They are expected to propose some keywords and concepts to describe the persona after learning from the Facebook profile. By depending on these keywords, they …

Mapping The Terrain Of Earth Jurisprudence: Landscape, Thresholds And Horizons, Anne Louise Schillmoller, Alessandro Pelizzon Jul 2013

Mapping The Terrain Of Earth Jurisprudence: Landscape, Thresholds And Horizons, Anne Louise Schillmoller, Alessandro Pelizzon

Environmental and Earth Law Journal (EELJ)

This paper investigates central ideas in the emergent field of Earth Jurisprudence. It suggests that development of conceptual and practical frameworks for an earth justice system predicated on rights of nature is currently at a nascent stage, but such ‘creative uncertainty’ provides scholars and practitioners with opportunities to identify and articulate new conceptual frameworks which avoid some of the hazards of human exceptionalism.

Part I suggests that the concept of ‘rights of nature’ rests upon contestable epistemological and ontological claims and that an effective Earth Jurisprudence will require a continual negotiation of interpretative disagreements and frameworks for action.

Part II …

Eyeth: A Novel For The Deaf, Kelsey Young Jul 2013

Eyeth: A Novel For The Deaf, Kelsey Young

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

Kelsey Young’s science fiction novel Eyeth, to use Tom Humphries’ phrase, is important for deaf literature because it exemplifies “culture talking” not the proof (“talking culture”) of a monolithic culture apart from the mainstream but complex deaf life on its own terms. It also focuses on a wide range of deaf people involved in intra-deafcentric conflicts; deaf sub-‐groups include a range of communication preferences (speaking, cued speech, signing) as well as multiple physical differences (deaf-blind, cerebral palsy, wheelchair users) though not ethnic diversity. A critical introduction to the novel explains that science fiction allows the creation of a world that …

The Role Of Identity Development In Design Problem-Based Learning: Essential Challenges In Sustainable Design Learning, David W. Garrett, Tracy Bhamra Jul 2013

The Role Of Identity Development In Design Problem-Based Learning: Essential Challenges In Sustainable Design Learning, David W. Garrett, Tracy Bhamra

Learn X Design Conference Series

This study focuses on challenges students face in learning through problem-based activities, in UK higher education in design for sustainability. Social theories of learning indicate the highly significant but possibly problematic nature of such social contexts for learning, a view underlined by psychological perspectives on potentially significant aspects of the learning process. In particular, the relevant development of identity is considered to play a centrally important role in learning, including in building expertise in tackling complex design problems. A key aspect of identity theory concerns the properties of self-evaluation during meaningful activities, and this suggests an important emphasis in examining …

Andrew Bae Interview, Richard Park Jul 2013

Andrew Bae Interview, Richard Park

Asian American Art Oral History Project

Bio: While Andrew Bae is situated in Chicago, he has clients from all over the globe. Born and raised in Seoul, South Korea, Andrew Bae picked up on the business of galleries after attending school and studying chemistry and worked as a chemist for several years. Although his gallery is in one of the more desirable locations of River North, he doesn't seem to carry that many artists. He prefers a limited selection of artists (around 10) as he feels there is more personal connection with his artists especially as a gallery owner. Though the business is changing, Andrew Bae …

No Place For Middlemen: Civic Culture, Downtown Environment, And The Carroll Public Market During The Modernization Of Portland, Oregon, James Richard Louderman Jul 2013

No Place For Middlemen: Civic Culture, Downtown Environment, And The Carroll Public Market During The Modernization Of Portland, Oregon, James Richard Louderman

Dissertations and Theses

Following the Civil War, the American government greatly expanded the opportunities available for private businessmen and investors in an effort to rapidly colonize the West. This expansion of private commerce led to the second industrial revolution in which railroads and the corporation became the symbols and tools of a rapidly modernizing nation. It was also during this period that the responsibility of food distribution was released from municipal accountability and institutions like public markets began to fade from the American urbanscape. While the proliferation of private grocers greatly aided many metropolises' rapid growth, they did little to secure a sustainable …

Acts 17: Paul Before The Areopagus, Michael R. Preece Jul 2013

Acts 17: Paul Before The Areopagus, Michael R. Preece

Theses and Dissertations

Luke's record of Paul in Athens is among the most interesting and widely studied topics in the life of the Apostle Paul. Luke recorded that Paul taught in the Athenian marketplace, where he was asked to present his doctrines before the Areopagus. Many have commented on the controversial aspects of Paul's speech before the council as recounted by Luke. Much of this scholarly commentary has been centered on the speech itself and the historical authenticity of the account. The purpose of this thesis is to reexamine the context and the setting of the speech as recorded by Luke in the …

Teaching The Design Of Narrative Visualization: Using Metaphor For Financial Literacy And Decision Making, Aaron Fry, Jennifer Wilson, Carol Overby Jul 2013

Teaching The Design Of Narrative Visualization: Using Metaphor For Financial Literacy And Decision Making, Aaron Fry, Jennifer Wilson, Carol Overby

Learn X Design Conference Series

The authors provide a scholarly definition for metaphor-rich, story-driven “narrative visualization,” and assert the importance of this methodology in contemporary design education. They propose “narrative visualization” as especially useful in promoting financial literacy: a context in which design can both facilitate understanding and possibly influence behavior. This emotionally-engaging means has the potential to affect the “System 1” intuitive decision-making processes that Kahneman and others have identified as the primary drivers of financial behavior. The case study here presents a recent design course that was customized to teach “narrative visualization” in a financial-literacy context. Student work from that course is examined through …
