Materials Selection: From Technical To Emotional Material Properties, Maria González, Javier Peña Jul 2013

Materials Selection: From Technical To Emotional Material Properties, Maria González, Javier Peña

Learn X Design Conference Series

Materials now have the ability to transform energy, to adapt to the environment and to mimic effects only previously possible for nature. They change their properties with external stimuli and provide different perceptions depending on environmental conditions. This dynamism then converts the materials into pure mechanism, pure machine, pure image and pure feeling. The relationship of the person who works with the material, engineers, designers, etc. is no longer so direct. This connection based on experience, on a physical and perceptive knowledge of the materials is today mainly abstract. This fact hinders material selection, as it focuses on the technical …

A Closer Look At 'Incluso' And 'Excepto', Amy S. Orf Jul 2013

A Closer Look At 'Incluso' And 'Excepto', Amy S. Orf

Faculty Works

In presenting prepositional pronouns, many Spanish textbooks include incluso and excepto in a list of exceptions that are used with the subject pronouns yo and tú, instead of mí and ti. While it is true that incluso and excepto do not directly precede mí and ti, it is not true that they always require the subject pronouns yo and tú. I argue that pronoun use with incluso and excepto is more complicated than indicated in textbooks and that it actually varies according to the context of the sentence.

Little Shop Of Horrors, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department Jul 2013

Little Shop Of Horrors, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department

2013 Summer Theatre

Little Shop of Horrors is a delectable sci-fi horror musical with an electrifying 1960s pop/rock score by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman.

Seymour Krelborn is a meek and dejected assistant at a floral shop who happens upon a strange plant, which he affectionately names “Audrey II” after his crush at the shop. Little does he know that this strange and unusual plant will develop a soulful R&B voice, a potty mouth, and an unquenchable thirst for HUMAN BLOOD.

As Audrey II grows bigger and meaner, the carnivorous plant promises limitless fame and fortune to Seymour, as long as he continues …

The Power Of Voice: The Indian Arts Research Centers Identity Shift, Laura Elliff Jul 2013

The Power Of Voice: The Indian Arts Research Centers Identity Shift, Laura Elliff

American Studies ETDs

Over the past three decades and in a significant shift, museum professionals have been collaborating with tribal communities by incorporating their voices into the daily tasks of exhibition design, education, and programs, as well as collections care and storage. This study will examine the Indian Arts Research Center's history and identity by highlighting collaborative projects that have resulted in the inclusion of Native voices and in some cases a joint decision-making process, which I argue has shifted the IARC's institutional identity. In the past, the IARC collection has mostly been managed and created by non-Native people, and Native input was …

Carnales: Transnational Affiliation In Chicano Vietnam War Protest, Kirsten Lustgarten Jul 2013

Carnales: Transnational Affiliation In Chicano Vietnam War Protest, Kirsten Lustgarten

American Studies ETDs

This thesis explores Chicano involvement in and protest against the Vietnam war through a lens of cultural production, particularly song lyrics. It identifies a tension between the fact that Chicanos had proportionally even more to lose from the war than did Anglos, and the fact that Chicano-authored antiwar song is unknown while Anglo-authored protest song is inextricable from the era in the popular imaginary. The study finds that Chicano antiwar song was scarce, and less explicit in tone than that composed by Anglos, and argues that this distinction was caused by a combination of assimilationist pressures and the dictates of …

Write Of The Valkyries: An Analysis Of Selected Life Narratives Of Women In The Heavy Metal Music Subculture, Aurore Diehl Jul 2013

Write Of The Valkyries: An Analysis Of Selected Life Narratives Of Women In The Heavy Metal Music Subculture, Aurore Diehl

American Studies ETDs

Despite women and girls making up a substantial portion of the audience and a small but increasing number of the musicians of heavy metal music, attention to their perspectives is frequently absent from scholarly treatments of the musical genre and its subculture. Feminist scholars writing about women musicians in popular music, likewise, seldom give much attention to female metal musicians. This is problematic because it excludes the voices of those women, many of whom are young and working-class, who have found the metal subculture to be a uniquely powerful venue for their self-expression. In my master's thesis, I will address …

Salinas Pueblo Missions: The Early History, Jeanette L. Wolfe Jul 2013

Salinas Pueblo Missions: The Early History, Jeanette L. Wolfe

History ETDs

This paper examines the early history of Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument just beyond the time when Gran Quivira was set aside as a government reservation. It focuses on the Pueblo Indian and Spanish Colonial mission ruins now protected by the National Park Service, at the management units of Gran Quivira, Abó, and Quarai, while also placing the Salinas story into the broader historical context of New Mexico and U. S. West history. This is accomplished by a careful examination of the first hand accounts by individuals who visited the sites throughout this early period in their history, with a …

Private Matters: The Place Of Privacy In English Legal Records, Romances, And Letters, 1300-1500, Christine Kozikowski Jul 2013

Private Matters: The Place Of Privacy In English Legal Records, Romances, And Letters, 1300-1500, Christine Kozikowski

English Language and Literature ETDs

As a result of the growth of cities and the rise of a merchant class in later medieval England, the desire for privacy began to emerge alongside an increase in personal consciousness. In my dissertation, I examine the place of privacy in fourteenth- and fifteenth-century England by juxtaposing elements of the private such as access, intimacy, and withdrawal in historical documents such as court records and marriage customs against canonical literature including, but not only, Chaucers Troilus and Criseyde, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and Malory's Le Morte Darthur. My study explains the dynamics between privacy and place in …

The Forging Of Castilian Law: Land Disputes Before The Royal Audiencia And The Transmission Of A Legal Tradition, James E. Dory-Garduño Jul 2013

The Forging Of Castilian Law: Land Disputes Before The Royal Audiencia And The Transmission Of A Legal Tradition, James E. Dory-Garduño

History ETDs

The study of legal history has attracted scholars who have surveyed legal writings and their development over time as a body of literature. Others have taken this further by analyzing how the principles contained in these legal writings have been applied, by attempting to analyze cases with similar issues, usually in regards to a specific region or jurisdiction. This study combines both approaches by analyzing how Castilian law formed in the eleventh, twelfth, and thirteenth centuries and was applied first through the royal court and then through the Audiencia Real Castellana (high tribunal). While there have been studies that analyze …

Sovereign Conflicts And Divided Loyalties: Native American Survivance In The Era Of Nuclear Modernity Story Of The Western Shoshone And Their Response To The Yucca Mountain High-Level Radioactive Waste Repository, Amy Sue Goodin Jul 2013

Sovereign Conflicts And Divided Loyalties: Native American Survivance In The Era Of Nuclear Modernity Story Of The Western Shoshone And Their Response To The Yucca Mountain High-Level Radioactive Waste Repository, Amy Sue Goodin

American Studies ETDs

This is the story of the ways in which the Western Shoshone have articulated identities amidst the ever-changing structures of governance that have defined U.S.-Native intergovernmental relations since the early days of U.S. efforts to colonize the American continent. However, the story focuses on nuclear colonialism. At issue is the specific nature of tribal participation in nuclear waste policy under emergent conditions of possibility as defined by U.S.-Native intergovernmental interactions (or a lack thereof). Ultimately, then, it is a story of how the Western Shoshone have articulated adaptive identities to assure survivance both physically and culturally to combat U.S. efforts …

Imagining "The Town Too Tough To Die": Tourism, Preservation, And History In Tombstone, Arizona, Kara L. Mccormack Jul 2013

Imagining "The Town Too Tough To Die": Tourism, Preservation, And History In Tombstone, Arizona, Kara L. Mccormack

American Studies ETDs

This dissertation looks at the ways popular culture, preservation, and economic exigencies continually circulate and interact in Tombstone, Arizona the ways tourists make meaning from the site the importance of the concepts of history and authenticity and the resonance of the Earp Myth and the Mythic West worldwide. Tombstone's place within that myth cannot be understated, as it has come to signify for many the ideas wrapped up in the myth as a whole. On a more basic level, Tombstone fits within wider trends in historic preservation and heritage sites that are central to an analysis of the power and …

Microbes, Individuals, And Medical Charity: Tuberculosis And The Remaking Of Liberal Individualism In Late 19th-Century Philadelphia, Carson Metzger Jul 2013

Microbes, Individuals, And Medical Charity: Tuberculosis And The Remaking Of Liberal Individualism In Late 19th-Century Philadelphia, Carson Metzger

American Studies ETDs

For most of Western history, tuberculosis was an incurable disease--its victims, destined to die. However, in late-19th century Philadelphia, changes in science, public health, and medical charity contributed to a remaking of the disease. Through the experiments of the bacteriological laboratory, and the commitment of governmental and private resources to tuberculosis treatment, scientists and physicians would come to tout the disease's curability. By the beginning of the 20th century, the disease was transformed into a curable entity caused, not by an uncontrollable force of nature, but by an ostensibly containable microbe, the tubercle bacillus. This dissertation argues that this transformation …

Indita Que Si Indita Que No, Juan A. Romero Jr. Jul 2013

Indita Que Si Indita Que No, Juan A. Romero Jr.

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

Much has been written on the balladry of the US. and Mexico. Much has been written on the musical tradition in New Mexico. Much has been written on the tradition of Inditas in New Mexico and Southern Colorado. So one must ask the question, why another study on a subject which many have exhausted? This thesis is written in hopes of adding to the dialogue these scholars have left us. It is also written in hopes of providing an anthology or canon that in times past did not exist or was inaccessible for scholarly analysis. Since most Inditas are dispersed …

Espacios Recorridos En La Escritura Sobre El Exilio: Luis Enrique Délano, Tununa Mercado Y Saúl Ibargoyen Islas En México, Marcela Patricia Zarate Fernandez

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

During the second half of the twentieth century, in many Latin American countries, military dictatorships that implemented a National Security Doctrine were developed, as a way to counteract the gradual attacks by socialist or communist groups. These political clashes were characterized by violence, fear instilled into society, the abolition of rights and freedoms as well as exile. The dissertation presented here is focused on the outcome that exile produced on those writers that lived this experience. Novels, biographies, autobiographies and testimonies about exile are characterized by presenting the memories emerging from the journey of exile. Through the observation of this …

July 3, 2013 Reflection: A Chance Encounter, Ian A. Isherwood Jul 2013

July 3, 2013 Reflection: A Chance Encounter, Ian A. Isherwood

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

In a July 4 letter to his father-in-law, General Alexander Hays expressed reserve. “Yesterday was a warm one for us,” he wrote. “The fight of my division was a perfect success […] We are all sanguine of ridding our soil of the invaders.”

The “perfect success” for Hays was his command’s role in the repulse of Pettigrew’s division in what has become known as Pickett’s Charge. It was an unquestionable victory for his division and the Army of the Potomac. Yet Alex Hays’s matter-of-fact letter was not buoyant with the egoism so easily ascribed to generals after their victories. Hays …

Making Room: A Place For Children’S Spirituality In The Christian Church, Heather Ingersoll Jul 2013

Making Room: A Place For Children’S Spirituality In The Christian Church, Heather Ingersoll

SPU Works

A relatively uncharted territory until recently, the concept of children as innate spiritual beings has garnered significant attention among scholars over the past two decades. Seminal studies by researchers provide practitioners with the opportunity to gain a deeper appreciation of the spirituality of children and their ability to seek and contemplate spiritual concepts (Ratcliff, 2007). The more that is learned about children’s spirituality, the more apparent it becomes that the Christian church in the United States generally fails to provide sufficient space for children to explore, develop, and share their spirituality. This potentially leads children to suppress or disconnect from …

Factores Que Influyen En La Adquisición De Los Sonidos Róticos Del Español Como Segunda Lengua: Sensibilidad Cultural, Motivación, Nivel De Instrucción, Tipo De Discurso, Tiempo De Residencia En El Extranjero Y Contexto Fonético, Ixchel Zarco Gonzalez

Theses and Dissertations

The body of the literature examining the acquisition of Spanish rhotics is expanding (e.g., Canfield, 1940; Face, 2006; Rose, 2010; Hurtado & Estrada, 2010). Most studies on the acquisition of Spanish rhotics have focused on how students progress at different levels of instruction (e.g., Rose, 2010; Hurtado & Estrada, 2010) while various other factors have been shown to affect the second language acquisition of phonology, such as style variation (e.g., Diaz-Campos, 2006; González--Bueno, 1997; Zampini, 1994), L1 transfer (e.g., Major, 2001), and experience abroad (e.g., Díaz-Campos, 2004, 2006; Lafford, 2006). Work on the acquisition of the Spanish tap and trill …

A Theory Of Text As Action:Why Delivery Through Publication Improves Student Writers And Their Writing, Lisa Kae Thomas Jul 2013

A Theory Of Text As Action:Why Delivery Through Publication Improves Student Writers And Their Writing, Lisa Kae Thomas

Theses and Dissertations

Students in required writing courses often fail to see the purpose of their writing and invest themselves in their writing. Many composition pedagogues have noticed that one solution to this problem is to help students publish their writing, and have reported the positive outcomes of their publication-focused courses. However, this practice has not been grounded in theory. My project connects the practice of publishing student writing to theory. I draw on Kenneth Burke's and other's ideas of text as action and show how the ancient cannon of delivery is a necessary means of experiencing and understanding text as action with …

Memory As Ecology In The Poetry Of Tomas Tranströmer, Richelle Jolene Wilson Jul 2013

Memory As Ecology In The Poetry Of Tomas Tranströmer, Richelle Jolene Wilson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to explore how memory functions ecologically in the poetry of Tomas Tranströmer. The term ecology is useful because of its connotative associations with the natural world as well as its broader definition of being a network of relationships as they function within and relate to their environment. Throughout his oeuvre, Tranströmer positions memory as being an external presence with which he interacts primarily because he honors it as a living being and he feels a poetic responsibility to it. As such, he grapples with the challenges of representation, particularly the limitations of language. Ultimately, …

Applied Theatre: History, Practice, And Place In American Higher Education, Joseph A. Obermueller Jul 2013

Applied Theatre: History, Practice, And Place In American Higher Education, Joseph A. Obermueller

Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this paper is to examine the practice of Applied Theatre in order to better define the genre and make a case for its legitimization and inclusion in higher theatre education. By looking at the theatre practitioners of the 20th century who paved the way for its existence as well as modern practitioners, a definition will be distilled down to five core characteristics of the practice with several case studies illustrating those characteristics. Once a clear distinction has been made between Applied Theatre and other similar genres, the case will be made for why the field should be …

In Their Footsteps, In Their Words: Special Section, 1914-1963

Colby Magazine

Three wars. A devastating economic depression. Construction of an entirely new campus from scratch. And all in 50 years.

The period that began as World War I erupted and ended as the tumult of the 1960s loomed was marked by a series of unprecedented events that could have mortally wounded a modestly funded liberal arts college in central Maine. The Great War emptied the campus. World War II turned Colby into a military training center. The bold decision to move the College to Mayflower Hill was sandwiched by the Depression and the Korean War and marked by the return of …

Developing (Architectural) Design Knowledge: A Learner-Researcher Study, Tanja Golja, Lynette Schaverien Jul 2013

Developing (Architectural) Design Knowledge: A Learner-Researcher Study, Tanja Golja, Lynette Schaverien

Learn X Design Conference Series

While design researchers use diverse approaches to study designing, non-designers face specific impediments in adopting these research approaches in their quest to gain design knowledge. Recognizing such challenges, this paper outlines how one education academic engineered a first-person methodology to investigate the nature of designing. Through undertaking a learner-researcher study in an undergraduate architectural design basics subject, learning about design through learning to design, she tracked her developing design ideas and crystallized a view of architectural designing as a three-phase heuristic for value selection: imagining possibilities, interpreting ideas to form architectural principles and distilling quality. Her subsequent small-scale test of …

The Physical Theatre Of War: Language, Memory, And Gender In Black Watch And War Horse, Andrea M. Gunoe Jul 2013

The Physical Theatre Of War: Language, Memory, And Gender In Black Watch And War Horse, Andrea M. Gunoe

Theses and Dissertations

The public's perception of war is influenced by every media story they see, every account they read, and every story they hear. News telecasts and newspapers tend to lean towards a focus of the grand narratives of war such as political involvement and overarching strategy. Media such as books and film can tell a more personal narrative of the events of war and attempt to display how war "really is" through the use of written and visual language that focuses more on how things happened as opposed to simply what happened. Theatre provides a unique perspective on war as the …
