Toward A Further Understanding Of The Extensibility Of Sign Languages, Jason Hopkins
Toward A Further Understanding Of The Extensibility Of Sign Languages, Jason Hopkins
Theses and Dissertations
Sign language video recordings have limited extensibility when compared with live, face-to-face communication by signers. In an effort to improve the extensibility of video recordings this study explores the possibility of leveraging a common meaning negotiation technique, depictional signing, to increase understanding of recorded texts. In an effort to gauge the understanding of depictional signing compared to lexical signing a Recorded Text Test was devised using two texts, one with a high number of visual depictions, the other with a high number of lexical signs. While a comparison of the results of the two tests did not substantiate the hypothesis …
Jack London: Landscape, Love, And Place, Kristin Yoshiko Ladd
Jack London: Landscape, Love, And Place, Kristin Yoshiko Ladd
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In Jack London: Landscape, Love, and Place, American Studies theories and methods formed the prime basis for analysis of London's biography, historical context, and literary significance. Particularly, the ideas of agrarianism, the Turner Thesis moment, Western literature, American masculinity, Victorian ideals, and sustainable farm practices in America were used to understand London's motivations for writing and creating his farm, his influence on American literature, and his texts' abilities to open avenues between literature and place-based education. Key concepts that influenced how London's works could be incorporated into and applied to didactic theory included David Sobel's seminal works in place-based education. …

Dams, Roads, And Bridges: (Re)Defining Work And Masculinity In American Indian Literature Of The Great Plains, 1968-Present, Joshua Tyler Anderson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In the study of contemporary American Indian literature, the definition of work and the characterization of Native and non-native laborers—farmers, ranchers, lawmen, smugglers, Indian Affairs agents, academics, activists, "traditionalists," tour guides, artists, among others—are rarely the lenses that scholars use to interpret the texts. Instead, issues of class and labor often take a backseat to those of cultural survivance and traditional and/or "mix-blood" identity, resistance to historical and ongoing acts of colonialism, reassertion of treaty rights and cultural practices, and reclamation of land and cultural artifacts. However, although the canon of contemporary Native literatures warrants close attention to these issues, …

Colour And Light In Design - Levels Of Experiencing Colour And Light, Ulf Klarén, Harald Arnkil, Karin Fridell Anter
Learn X Design Conference Series
In our designed culture, every environment, object and picture is analyzed from the viewpoint of colour and light. Colour and light play an important role in social life and culture. This paper springs from an epistemological project about concept formation in the field of colour and light. Based on own observations and scientific and scholarly references it presents a graphic model describing possible constituent relations between colour and light experiences. Design is the art of using knowledge – implicit or explicit – about how humans perceive, experience, and relate to the world around. In design all senses are involved, but …

You don’t know anything about me. You’ve never been to my country; you don’t know my native language; you may not even be able to locate Vietnam on a map.
And that’s ok. What matters isn’t that you already know about my country and my culture. What matters is your attitude toward learning about it. [excerpt]

Pronoun Production Order In A Gender-Neutral Language: A Single Case Study Of A Typically Developing Indonesian Child, Bernard A.J Jap
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
Research in children with normal language development has shown that there is a certain order in the production and learning of pronominal forms. To one’s knowledge, there has yet to be a study on the pronoun development of Indonesian speaking children whose native language do not distinguish between the nominative-accusative form (e.g. in English, I/me – Indonesian, saya/saya) and at the same time being gender neutral (e.g. in English, he/she – Indonesian, dia/dia). The present study follows the personal pronoun development of a (Jakarta) Indonesian-speaking child from 24 months to 46 months of age.
Code-Mixing Among Students Of English Literature 2009 In Universitas Indonesia, Andari Ditya
Code-Mixing Among Students Of English Literature 2009 In Universitas Indonesia, Andari Ditya
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
People today are more globalized than before, and most of them are now able to speak more than one language. It also happens among the English Literature students 2009 in Universitas Indonesia who are able to speak English in their daily conversation. This may lead to the phenomenon called code- mixing. However, this code-mixing focuses more on written communication in their social media’s status. There are two major points that this paper attempts to make. First, the description of code- mixing itself according to the theory given by Wardhaugh (1986) and Hoffman (1991) and how it can be reflected into …

Fulla’S And Barbie’S Images In Relation To Women’S Beauty And Cultural Difference, Juwita Anindya
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
Most people know Barbie, a doll that conveys some values about culture and about the concept of women’s beauty. However, Barbie only represents one specific culture, which is Western culture. Different with Western culture, Eastern culture needs a doll who can represent their values. Then, Fulla appears as the representative of Eastern beauty. Fulla conveys some values about Eastern culture and about the new concept of women’s beauty which are different from Barbie. Fulla’s appearance here is thought can emphasize the cultural differences among the society, but it can give another choice to shape people’s new thought about the beauty …

Learn X Design Conference Series
Classroom Architect is a project-based curriculum that uses the principles of design thinking to review mathematical concepts, such as measurement, scale and area. The anchor task in this curriculum is to create a 3-D virtual model of the ideal classroom, based on the data the students collect. The curriculum uses design thinking as leverage to help students transfer classroom knowledge to real world problem-solving situations. Specifically, the students go through design thinking process -- user needs discovery, ideation, prototype and redesign. In each step of the process different mathematical concepts are reviewed and reinforced through their application to the task. …

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public
There's been a good deal of digital ink spilled recently over whether the sesquicentennial is over. A provocative question can erupt into a torrent of thought.
But those thoughts have been brewing in my mind for a while now, since the whirlwind here in Gettysburg died down to a dull roar from the fever pitch of a few weeks ago. The tourist tide has subsided. The streets are easier to drive.
But most importantly, the press inquiries have died away. Nearly every day of the anniversary week, I had an e-mail or a voice-mail asking me to help a reporter …
Voting Blocks, Julian Maxwell Hayter
Voting Blocks, Julian Maxwell Hayter
Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications
In 1971, Creighton Court resident Curtis Holt filed a monumental lawsuit against the city. His suit attacked an increasingly problematic, yet subtle form of institutionalized racism — the dilution of African-Americans’ growing voting power. Richmond had annexed 23 square miles of Chesterfield County a year earlier to head off the city’s growing black electorate and keep City Council predominantly white. Holt’s suit charged that blacks would have won a council majority in 1970 had Richmond not added 47,000 suburbanites, only 3 percent of whom were black.

Knowledge Generation In Doctoral Design Education, Martina Maria Keitsch

Knowledge generation in doctoral design education and its endeavour to meet a variety of interdisciplinary issues from engineering to aesthetics, sustainability and stakeholder requirements can be labelled with what Rittel and Webber called a “wicked problem” [1]. The following article reflects on conditions, methods and challenges to combine design theory and design research practice on a doctoral level. The study case for these reflections is the PhD course, PD 8300: “Topics in design research” at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. The course introduces among others a disciplinary architecture for industrial design and three theory of science philosophies related …

A few days ago, I was having a conversation with an older gentleman. He was friendly and very interested in my studies, but every now and then he would interject some racist slur or joke. He insistently referred to undocumented individuals as illegals because, according to him, “that’s exactly what they are.” He also made a few comments about Aryan dominance yet claimed that he wasn’t racist because he discriminates against all non-Aryans equally. The man clearly expected me to laugh along with him, especially with those last remarks, as if it were completely normal to utter them in an …
