"Painter Melinda Cootsona chose the title 'A Sense of Place' for her September 2013 show at The Studio Shop long before “Richard Diebenkorn: The Berkeley Years” opened at San Francisco’s DeYoung Museum and art historians launched a series of lectures on his sense of place, though perhaps this is no coincidence. Cootsona expresses a clear love for the work of Diebenkorn and shares his figurative/abstract aesthetic and love of color. The paintings in Cootsona’s newest body of works offer similarly sensuous appreciation for the particular pleasures of California sunlight, but the “sense of place” she depicts may reflect a more …

Constellation Translation: A Canadian Noh Play, Judy Halebsky

Daphne Marlatt’s play, The Gull, explores the form and structure of traditional Japanese Noh theatre to expand the possibilities of translating Noh for a Canadian audience. Marlatt developed the play out of her 1974 collection of poems, Steveston, which touches on the experience of Japanese-Canadian residents of the fishing community of Steveston, BC, who were evacuated and interned during World War II. In 2006, under the direction of Heidi Specht, Pangaea Arts staged The Gull through collaboration among Japanese Noh master Akira Matsui, Noh professionals from Tokyo, and Canadian actors. The Post-World War Ii Origin And Evolution Of Mountain Snowshoes And Mountain Snowshoeing In North America, Karl Lillquist

The origins of mountain snowshoes can be traced back to the 1940s and 1950s, when small, maneuverable wooden frames were developed in the Adirondacks and Green Mountains. Fixed traction devices and forward hinge points originated in the Cascades in the late 1950s, enabling better access to steep terrain. The 1960s brought strong, lightweight aluminum-framed snowshoes from the Sierra Nevada. During this time, neoprene-coated nylon began to replace rawhide lacing and bindings in the Adirondacks, while neoprene-coated nylon decking was first used in the Cascades. Integrated plastic frame/decking snowshoes were a 1960s Rockies weight- and labor-saving innovation. From the Cascades in …

“Publishing the Victorian Novel” looks to the methods of book history and literary criticism to ask how we might understand the ways Victorian publishers and authors (alongside editors, publishers’ readers, librarians, and booksellers) worked together to make novels. Paying attention to both the material and literary aspects of this making, the essay examines a few different scenes of novel publication with a particular focus on the way Victorian novelists, publishers, and reading publics understood aspects of the publication process like the serialization of novels, the three-volume novel, and the authority of the novelist and publisher. In this issue, PASAA is very honoured to have an opportunity to interview Richard Kiely, Professor of Applied Linguistics and Language Education in the Centre for International Language Teacher Education (CILTE) at University College Plymouth, St Mark and St John, in the UK. Professor Kiely's research interests include language programme evaluation, language teaching and teacher training, and language learning explored from language socialisation and identity perspectives. Using Journal Writing With Peer Feedback To Enhance Efl Students' Writing Ability Across Proficiency Levels, Watcharee Kulprasit, Thanyapa Chiramanee

This quasi-experimental research integrated journal writing with peer feedback in an EFL writing classroom to examine its impact on writing ability of 42 Mathayomsuksa 3 Semi-English-program students in terms of accuracy and fluency across proficiency levels. The findings revealed that all students' overall writing ability improved significantly. The middle and the low groups' writing ability improved significantly in terms of accuracy and the word count in their writing significantly increased while the high group's did not. However, no significant improvement was found in all students' production of consistent language structures and vocabulary use: an aspect of fluency. The data analysis …

This study aimed to investigate the effects of KWL to help struggling college EFL readers to read informational texts. Thirteen Thai college second-year students received instruction on how to use KWL through a process of teacher modeling. They were engaged in activating their background knowledge and interest, generating their own questions, and discussing the texts with peers and teachers before, during and after reading. Four reading tests and interviews were used to investigate the students' reading performance. The results revealed that the struggling readers did improve their reading performance over time and had active engagement in reading the informational texts. …

This study focuses on Thai accented English in one suprasegmental aspect—tonality (tone group chunking and rhythmic group division). Prior studies mostly compared the productions of learners at different proficiency levels with reference to native speakers as a norm. This study goes further by investigating the degree of difficulty in understanding Thai accented read speech by two groups of native speaker judges with different amounts of contact with Thai learners. Writing a quality literature review is important for success in publication and graduate studies, but it is a difficult task for many novice researchers and graduate students to achieve as noted by several scholars.
