Colonoware And Culture: The Changing Interpretation Of 17th Century Ceramic Traditions In The South Eastern United States: An Overview Of Current Thought And History, Michael Chodoronek

Colonoware is a low fired pottery tradition concentrated in the southeastern United States. It has been associated with native populations, enslaved populations and low- income populations in the American colonies of the seventeenth through to the nineteenth century. This paper is concerned with the history, development and current conceptions of colonoware in the southeastern United States, namely Virginia and South Carolina coastal regions. This paper will look at the possible future use of colonoware as diagnostic material culture beyond its current state.

Caving In: An Archaeology Of Historical Cave Exploration And Exploitation, Stephen Damm, Allison Young

While the archaeological investigation of caves with these dark zones has been developing for some time, this work has almost exclusively focused on prehistoric activities. This paper demonstrates the value of a historical archaeological examination of dark zone caves. Archaeology in caves with extended dark zones offers unique insight into the interaction of the natural world with the encroaching capitalist world system due both to the difficulty of access and the lack of generalized occupational sites. We propose a theoretical and methodological framework to explore how these caves have interacted with modern capitalist enterprises in the historical period

Adoption is a rather peculiar phenomenon of human society which is almost exclusive to our species, at least so far in how prolific it is. Adoption always involves some altruistic behavior at least initially (Silk 1987:40), and in our modern society it would certainly seem to be just that. Adoption of course is not simply an invention of modern times or western culture though as some may think, but exists crossculturally; in an HRAF search of 258 cultures 162 cultures are shown to have some form of adoption. The transition from a hunter-gatherer lifestyle to dependence on agricultural production is commonly considered one of the most important achievements of human history. This transition, often referred to as the Neolithic Revolution, ushered in a variety of changes in human dietary intake, food processing and procurement methods, settlement patterns, and physical activity. Skeletal analyses of human remains from early agricultural centers throughout the world indicate that this revolution significantly affected overall human health. Significant attention has been paid to issues of water and rural agriculture worldwide and the nexus of water and urban agriculture in developing countries; however, very little research has been conducted on how water is understood and managed to grow food in cities of the Global North like the United States. To address this literature gap, the author explores the relationship between urban agriculture and water in the United States using a collective case study approach to examine urban farms and community gardens based in Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri. Is there an ideal Christian family, or indeed, is the term "family" even the best way to think about Christian life together, especially in relation to the term "domestic church"? When it comes to marriage and family, scholars writing about the concept of "domestic church" often do one of the following: (1) focus on Gen 1 and 2 as putting forth an ideal nuclear family; or (2) make family out to be a redeeming or eschatological vision on its own, in place of Jesus Christ. Both engineering and human living take place in a messy world, one chock full of unknowns and contingencies. "Design reasoning" is the way engineers cope with real-world contingency. Because of the messiness, books about engineering design cannot have "ideal solutions" printed in the back in the same way that mathematics textbooks can. Design reasoning does not produce a single, ideally correct answer to a given problem but rather generates a wide variety of rival solutions that vie against each other for their relative level of "satisfactoriness." Since the founding of the United States, the task of determining who has the right to political participation has been difficult. As a result, many groups, including women, had to take dramatic steps to ensure their right to suffrage and access to public space. Beginning in 1913 with the first National Demonstration and the pickets that followed in 1917, these women began to claim national public space as a space for protest. This research seeks to determine and understand the evolution of identities embraced by suffragists as correlated with protest tactics used from 1913 to 1920 in Washington, D.C. The …

Ideas have consequences—for good or bad. The apostle Paul, in his letter to a group of Romans, stated that the metaphysical world could be known to humanity (Rom 1:18ff). Over 1,800 years later, Emanuel Kant, a German philosopher, challenged this view of the metaphysical world; that is, Kant claimed that God could not be known, and western Christian philosophy has scrambled ever since to make sense of the two.1 On a similar scale, Howard Gardner, professor at Harvard University, challenged the prevailing view of intelligence in 1983 with his book Frames of Mind, stating that there were a number of …

Many gathered here at this symposium on the consecrated life are members of these Marian congregations founded in the nineteenth century and are now interested in reclaiming some of these insights into the qualities of the person of Mary as manifested in the charisms, traditions, and roots of their congregations. This recovery is motivated not only by the desire for a deeper personal understanding but also for making these insights available to a larger and contemporary audience. Sometimes the charisms of the past, expressed in what today may appear to be a limited context, are not understood.
