Democratizing Indian Popular Music: From Cassette Culture To The Digital Era, Peter L. Manuel

The history of Indian popular music constitutes in itself a significant development in modern culture, as this set of genres—especially but not only in their Bollywood forms—have been cherished by hundreds of millions of listeners not only in South Asia but internationally as well. At the same time, the trajectory of Indian popular music represents a dramatic case study of media culture as well, as its patterns of ownership, consumption, and even musical structures themselves have been conditioned by technological changes. Learning to be self-directed involves taking responsibility for the objectives of learning. This paper will consider the challenges involved in the promotion of independent autonomous learning and the taking of an active role in learning within the confines of a British institutional higher education setting in Egypt. The paper raises the discussion that if autonomous learning is to be encouraged at Egyptian universities, faculty staff need to develop new conceptions of teaching and learning; be willing to test various methods and techniques of instruction; and acquire new skills as they shift from the role of knowledge provider to the role …

This chapter both explains the origins of emotivism in C. K. Ogden and I. A. Richards, R. B. Braithwaite, Austin Duncan-Jones, A. J. Ayer and Charles Stevenson (along with the endorsement by Frank P. Ramsey, and the summary of C. D. Broad), and looks at Alasdair MacIntyre's criticisms of emotivism as the inevitable result of Moore's attack on naturalistic ethics and his ushering in the fact/value distinction, which was a historical product of the Enlightenment.

Evaluating Flat Glass Thickness At The Isaac Miles Farm (13cd139), Herbert Hoover National Historic Site West Branch,Ia, Laura Bender

Flat glass thicknesses can be used to date historic sites (Ball 1982; Chance & Chance 1976; Moir 1982; Richner 1996, 1997; Roenke 1978; Schoen 1990; Walker 1971; Weiland 2007). Schoen (J 990) identified a trend in thickness of window glass on the Great Plains. He noted that window thicknesses increased over time throughout the nineteenth century and developed a formula for dating panes. This paper will examine flat glass from the Isaac Miles Farm (13CD139) at Herbert Hoover National Historic Site. It is hoped that by employing statistical analysis, knowledge about the large deposit of flat glass excavatedfrom Test Unit …
