This project seeks to examine the emerging cultural significance of the modern hipster and determine their contribution to the greater discourse of counter-cultural formations of subversion and identity. Hipsters are depicted as and expected to live life and form tastes using irony. They come to represent the insincerity and lack of authenticity of a group that builds its identity using material representations of previous generations. Their use of irony comes to shape how they interact with each other and with mainstream society, which surrounds them. Whether reinforcing sexism through the use of ironic rhetoric or questioning dominant culture, irony plays …

In 1822, Mexico's boundaries held the territories of what is now Central America and Texas. Just after independence from Spain, it seemed Mexico would emerge as a powerful nation to challenge the United States in North America due to Mexico's vast lands and mineral wealth. That did not transpire. Political struggle in Mexico City and challenges from its peripheries undermined Mexico's political and economic stability. Central Americans chose to detach from Mexico in 1823 due to ideological differences based on colonial traditions, differences in the ethnic makeup of the populations of Central America and the Mexican plateau, and a shift …

Today the Champs-Élysées serves as one of the most iconic boulevards in the world; however, in the eighteenth century the area functioned similar to a modern day park. The transitional space provided fresh air and entertainment to the citizens of Paris.Contemporary documents illustrate both the many uses of the Champs-Élysées and the Comte d'Angiviller's determination to conserve the area as a transitional space. Although ultimately Angiviller failed to preserve the Champs-Élysées, he deserves recognition, as his efforts predate the park movement by nearly sixty years.

The Walloon Immigrants Of Northeast Wisconsin: An Examination Of Ethnic Retention, Jacqueline Lee Tinkler

This thesis examines the unusually enduring retention of ethnic culture by the Walloon Belgian immigrants who settled in northeastern Wisconsin between 1853 and 1857, as well as the combination of circumstances which enabled this ethnic island to form and continue, well into the twenty-first century. A review of the historiography focusing on European immigrants to the United States from the post-revolutionary period to the present reveals an emphasis on urban settlement and the assumed inevitability of the weakening of ethnic identity. Prior to August 6, 1945, the end of the world had been an abstract concept left to the gods to enact via supernatural means. Yet on that day, humanity saw for the first time the actual mechanism whereby it might end the world. So it was that in the aftermath of Hiroshima, two diametrically opposed messages emerged to give Americans a framework in which to assimilate the advent of nuclear weaponry. The first, articulated by atomic scientists and other intellectuals, reasoned that the threat of nuclear annihilation meant that war must be abolished through the formation of a One World …

In the process of narration, codeswitching, the use of words from one or more language by the same speaker within the same speech situation, reflects certain resistant strategies within the written text, forging a bridge to introduce alternative or alien viewpoints. Because languages develop, change, and often merge over time, reflecting societal and political shifts, the practice of codeswitching in the novel opens new spaces for interpretation, expanding the dialogic interaction within the text. This is an inquiry into school desegregation, Black Women, and spirituality with the focus on three young Black Women who desegregated a small rural high school in the South. Theoretically drawing upon the works of Alice Walker (1983, 1997, 2006), Audre Lorde (2007), Emilie Townes (1995, 1996, 1997), Toni Morrison (1988, 1993, 1998), James Anderson (1988), and William Watkins (1993, 2003, 2001, 2005, 2006), I gather testimonies of key events that help understand desegregation in Queensburg, Alabama, a fictional town that represents many rural Southern towns during the era of school desegregation. The Western North Pacific Ocean (WNP) produces more frequent and intense tropical cyclones (TC) than anywhere else in the world, and these storms greatly impact society. This study examines synoptic scale atmospheric patterns and their effects on landfalling typhoons in Japan, Taiwan and Vietnam using composite analysis at upper and mid-levels of the atmosphere, as well as analyzing teleconnection impacts on tropical cyclone frequency, duration and intensity.

Examined Best Track data (1946-2010) shows an increased likelihood of Taiwan landfalls earlier in the season, Japan landfalls mid-season, and Vietnam landfalls towards the end of the typhoon season. The formation locations also …

Warren, Maine is located in the midcoast region of southeastern Maine. The small town has a long history that is intrinsically linked to the maritime activities of the region, which began in the mid-seventeenth century. Sometime around 1782, Sarah Peters was brought to Warren as a slave on a ship owned by Captain James McIntyre. After slavery was outlawed in Massachusetts in 1783/1784, Sarah successfully sued for her freedom and married a man named Amos Peters. Together, they raised a large, mixed-racial family, and settled near South Pond, a good distance away from the main village. By the 1820s, they …
