In Translation: Modern Muslim Thinkers

The publication of this essay in Egypt in 1925 took the contemporaries of Ali Abdel Razek by storm.

At a time when there was widespread turmoil over the abolition of the caliphate by Ataturk in Turkey, Ali Abdel Razek, a religious cleric trained at Al-Azhar University, argued in favour of secularism.

The abolition of the caliphate had re-ignited the question of Islam and its relationship to political power. This essay unleashed the Arab world’s first great public debate published in the press with polemics supporting or refuting Ali Abdel Razek’s ideas.

Zeugma As The Provenance Of 12 Mosaic Fragments At Bowling Green State University, Stephanie Langin-Hooper, S. Rebecca Martin, Mehmet Önal

Art History Research

Bowling Green State University (BGSU) in Ohio is the current owner of 12 sections of floor mosaic dating to the 2nd-3rd c. A.D. Purchased by the university in 1965, these mosaic fragments were believed to be from the site of Antioch. In 2010-11, the mosaics were conserved and installed in BGSU’s Wolfe Center. In the following year the first-named author, organizing a symposium to celebrate the new display of the mosaics, invited R. Molholt to be the keynote speaker. This article analyzes James Joyce’s “Eveline” (1904), looking at the moral panic about “white slavery” in Europe and South America. The article especially focuses on Argentina, the foremost recipient of trafficked women between 1880 and 1930 (and, of course, Joyce’s destination choice for Eveline). By looking at Frank, the sailor who intends to take Eveline to Buenos Aires, this article explores the possible links between Joyce’s story and the sex trafficking industry thriving in Buenos Aires through the Jewish criminal association Zwi Migdal. Frank’s representation allows us to draw this connection because his behavior with Eveline coincides with the seduction …

Terracotta Figurines And Social Identities In Hellenistic Babylonia, Stephanie Langin-Hooper

Art History Research

Terracotta figurines are proposed as a particularly useful object corpus through which to access social identities in Hellenistic Babylonia. Cross-cultural interaction between Greeks and Babylonians has traditionally been the primary interest of scholars researching this society, and figurines were often recruited as evidence for the opposition of ethnic identities. In this work, a new approach to the figurines is proposed, which deemphasizes the categorical rigidity of typology and substitutes a flexible methodology of accessing multiple inter-object entanglements. A particular case study of “nude heroic” figurines (which are often considered evidence for display of cultural difference) is explored in detail, utilizing …

Serdok Paṇchen Shakya Chokden (1428–1507) stands out as one of the most remarkable thinkers of Tibet. The enormous body of his collected works is notable for the diversity and originality of the writings it contains, and for their exceptional rigor. One of the few Tibetan intellectuals affiliated with both the Sakyapa and Kagyiipa orders, which were often doctrinal and political rivals (see chapters 7 and n), he was also among the sharpest critics of Jé Tsongkhapa (chapter 16), the founder of the Gelukpa order that would come to dominate Tibet under the Dalai Lamas. The goal of this study was to present the most effective weekly sermon that is fresh, clear, interesting, relevant and life-changing for those that hear it. Congregational feedback was gathered over four weeks, through surveys, biometrics captured on film, and simultaneous sermon feedback. Adjustments, based on the feedback gathered during the first four weeks, were utilized in sermons during two additional weeks. The desired outcome was that the sermonic moment will be meaningful to the congregation, help them to internalize God's desires and expectations for His people, and contribute to the transformation of His children into Christ-likeness.

Communication Of Emotion In Music, Jesse Paul Huhnerkoch

The communication of emotion in music has been shown to be dependent on musical structure and emotional prompting with lyrical messages. This study seeks a new approach to researching the communication of emotion in music by creating musical samples that are based upon the sound wave frequency parameters of emotive speaking. An electronic survey containing six different emotive musical samples was conducted to gather listener interpretations of the intended emotional quality. Further research is needed to properly distinguish the parameters of emotive frequencies in order to provide for exposure of the functionalities of this phenomenon.

Gaps still exist in the history written about German Americans and how they assimilated or acculturated into American society from the late seventeenth century until the present day. History written about how German Americans became Americanized contains fifteen distinct types of scholarship that can roughly be divided into urban and rural disciplines. Because historians have not applied ideas introduced in urban studies into research about rural areas and vice versa, the overall arguments advanced by historians suffer. Additionally, historians have not researched colonial Germans, Germans who immigrated to America before the Revolution, in extensive depth. Furthermore, scholars can do more …

The purpose of this work is to demonstrate the importance of the Chattanooga Campaign. The campaign was important to the war because the Confederate loss opened the deeper Southern states to the advancing Union Armies. Due to the ineptitudes and failures of their leader, Braxton Bragg, the Army of Tennessee was forced to relinquish their hold on east Tennessee. Bragg's failures were equally matched by the insubordination he received from his subordinate officers, Leonidas Polk, William Hardee, and James Longstreet. These men failed to work together and consequently Tennessee was lost to the Union. Chattanooga was a major rail hub …

Book bindings and binding decor can reveal deep parts of our attitudes toward books and toward culture. Changes in attitudes toward the codex book during the French Revolution and the Industrial Revolution are part of continual change in book culture. The re-binding of early printed books is exemplary evidence of these changes. The new bindings express both a rejection of pre-Enlightenment culture and an attempt to stabilize traditional cultural values. This also suggests how we might view events customarily considered to be "revolutions".

The word feminist is often associated with negative connotations that prevent many individuals from adopting the feminist label and self-identifying with the women's movement. This creates challenges for feminists and the movement because individuals choose to believe stereotypes and distance themselves from feminism before fully understanding its purpose or positive aspects. The negative stereotypes and misconceptions associated with feminism and the women's movement contribute to individuals' hesitation to claim the feminist label.
