Collaboration: Talk. Trust. Write., Jim Fredricksen
English Literature Faculty Publications and Presentations
We have long recognized English classrooms, at all levels, as sites ripe for collaborative activity among students; when students read, write, and learn together, the classroom becomes a microcosm of the work we do as professionals in the field. In writing, collaboration can be vital. Collaborative writing often leads to projects that are richer and more complex than those produced by individuals, potentially engaging multiple audiences in broader conversations. However, collaboration can also present its own particular set of challenges, ranging from the practical (How do authors find each other and determine publication avenues?) to the more theoretical (Is the …

The Hispanic Profile Data Book For Idaho, Errol D. Jones, Rosaura Conley-Estrada, Greg Hill
History Faculty Publications and Presentations
The 2010 United States Census confirms the continuing dramatic growth of Idaho’s Hispanic people. Demand for demographic data and information regarding the Hispanic population continues to be essential for understanding and serving Idaho’s Hispanic community. In recognition of this need, in 2004 the Idaho Commission on Hispanic Affairs developed the first Hispanic Profile Project, a demographic report of Idaho’s Hispanic community at that time. Another Hispanic Profile report was published in 2007.

University Center for the Humanities Events
What does it mean to “perform race?” How do we, and how can we, understand the relationship between race and performance? This talk will examine the meanings of various performances and explore the interrelation of racial performances in everyday life to those on stage and in film; the case studies in this presentation will be far ranging, going from the horrible spectacle of slavery to the plays of Lorraine Hansberry to the film Bamboozled and finally to the 2012 presidential campaign. After the election, Dr. Elam will look at how power and politics figured into representations of Mitt Romney and …

2013-14 Series Brochure - Changing Climates, University Center For The Humanities
University Center for the Humanities Events
In our 2013-14 series, “Changing Climates,” the Center for the Humanities brings together scientists and humanists to consider how our climate is changing and what we need to know and do in response. Scientific research is defining issues that concern everybody, including the warming of the globe, the toxicity of our environment, and the fundamental changes we are making to the natural world. Scientists are giving us an opportunity, even a necessity, to talk across the usual boundaries within the University and throughout the community.

'A Century Of Transformations' Exhibit Design, Anne Giangiulio
'A Century Of Transformations' Exhibit Design, Anne Giangiulio
Selected Works Temporary Series
I designed this bilingual exhibit for the Centennial Museum located on the campus of The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) to commemorate the University's Centennial in 2014. 'A Century of Transformations' follows the Texas School of Mines and Metallurgy, which opened as a mining school in 1914, and evolved into the University of Texas at El Paso, a nationally recognized research university. Featuring over 40 text panels in English and Spanish, as well as video slideshows and an interactive sticky note feedback wall, the exhibit highlights the University’s rich history and traditions. It also features significant milestones, distinguished …

Chalk The Block 2013 Poster, Anne Giangiulio
Selected Works Temporary Series
I designed this poster for the annual Chalk the Block event which took place October 11–October 13, 2013 in downtown El Paso. For the pop-up gallery component of the event, I organized a group of 6 students from my 'Graphic Design 4: Typography' class at The University of Texas at El Paso. Their posters were judged and selected to be on sale in a downtown space, previously a vacant restaurant, which had been converted into a gallery for the three-day weekend event. All proceeds from the sale of the posters went directly to the students.

Conquistador Of The Useless, Anne Giangiulio
Selected Works Temporary Series
Book cover and interior template I designed for 'Conquistador of the Useless' by Joshua Isard, published by Cinco Puntos Press. Joshua Isard’s debut novel is a hoot. The hero Nathan Wavelsky moves into the burbs with his wife. Life is good. He’s a successful slacker. He doesn’t want to rock the boat. His definition of a good time is listening to his favorite bands on his iPod and staring at the grass and the poplar trees in his backyard. As a mid-level corporate manager, he does what his bosses tell him. If they want somebody fired, he fires them. No …

Next, Anne Giangiulio
Selected Works Temporary Series
Book cover and interior template I designed for the young adult novel 'Next' by Kevin Waltman, published by Cinco Puntos Press in both hardcover and paperback. Derrick Bowen has one thing on his mind when basketball practice starts his freshman year: winning the starting point guard job. (Well, a girl too.) But his old-school coach makes him sit on the bench. An elite prep school wants him to transfer from his inner-city public school, but all the adults steering him there have ideas of their own.

San Patricios T-Shirts, Anne Giangiulio
Selected Works Temporary Series
This is a logo I designed for a local El Paso Irish band called The San Patricios. The signos de exclamacion (¡!) refer to El Paso's location on the U.S.–Mexico border. The three-leaf clover depicts the numbers 915, which is the telephone area code of El Paso. The triple spiral is another Celtic symbol referring to the origin of the band' music. The band first wore T-shirts sporting the logo at their annual Saint Patrick's Day event at Ardovino's Desert Crossing in Sunland Park, NM on March 17, 2013.

Remember Dippy, Anne Giangiulio
Selected Works Temporary Series
Book cover and interior template I designed for the young adult novel 'Remember Dippy' by Shirley Reva Vernick, published by Cinco Puntos Press in both hardcover and paperback. Between helpings of mouthwatering shortcake, mysterious ferret disappearances, and a romance that misfires, thirteen-year-old Johnny discovers an unexpected, improbable friendship. 'Remember Dippy' is the 2014 Dolly Gray Children's Literature Award Winner for its focus on autism and a finalist for the The Texas Institute of Letters’ annual award—Fred Whitehead Award for Design of a Trade Book.

Rebecca & Adam's Wedding Invitations, Anne Giangiulio
Selected Works Temporary Series
I designed this wedding invitation for my good friends. It was inspired by a vintage Johnny Cash show poster that they both loved. The notched-cornered RSVP postcards are meant to resemble concert tickets, while still coordinating with the invitation. With matching lined envelopes and hand-calligraphy addresses, these hand silkscreened invitations helped complete the couple's music-themed wedding.

Wheatpaste Workshop / Large Typographic Panels Designed For Future Artspace El Paso Lofts Site, Anne Giangiulio
Selected Works Temporary Series
On March 1, 2013, I hosted a "Wheatpaste Workshop" for Department of Art students at The University of Texas at El Paso to learn the street art technique of wheat pasting. For the workshop, I designed a large-scale typographical graphic. The workshop wheat pasted the design over two, 4' x 8' plywood panels. These panels were then pieced side by side and installed upon the chain link fence on the 600 block of North Oregon Street in downtown El Paso, around the future site of Artspace El Paso Lofts. When completed in 2015, Artspace will blend 51 affordable live/work units …
The Desert Of The Ethical, Jules Simon
The Desert Of The Ethical, Jules Simon
Selected Works Temporary Series
As far as I can tell, the concept of “desert” in Levinas’s thought seems to retain itsfamiliar associations, namely, as an environment that can be empirically characterizedas inhospitable, barren, and destitute of the kinds of material resources necessary forthe growth of the autonomous and autochthonous subjective self. It also seems plausiblethat a relevant extension of desert conditions to human community in Levinas’stopography would be the “cities” of concentration camps of the Holocaust. In otherwords, there is a correlative interior type of desert that, with Levinas, can be intuitedas what I am calling a desert of the ethical . In what …
Angels, The Space Of Time, And Apocalyptic Blindness: On Günther Anders’ Endzeit — Endtime, Babette Babich
Angels, The Space Of Time, And Apocalyptic Blindness: On Günther Anders’ Endzeit — Endtime, Babette Babich
Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections
Anders was a preeminent critic of technology and critic of the atomic bomb as he saw this hermeneutico-phenomenologically in the visceral sense of being and time: the sheer that of its having been used (where the Nietzschean dialectic of the ‘having been’ reflects the essence of modern technology) as well as the bland politics of nuclear proliferation functions as programmatic aggression advanced in the name of defense and deterrence. The tactic of sheerly technological, automatic, mechanical, aggression is carried out in good conscience. The preemptive strike is, as Baudrillard observed, the opponent’s fault: such are the wages of evil. Violence …

Speaking The Language Of Destiny: Heidegger’S Conversation(S) With Hölderlin, James Magrini
Speaking The Language Of Destiny: Heidegger’S Conversation(S) With Hölderlin, James Magrini
Philosophy Scholarship
This essay offers the reader a unique interpretation of Heidegger’s notion of authentic destiny as it develops in the Hölderlin lectures and essays written in the 1930s through the 1950s. Ultimately, for Heidegger, the destiny of Germany, and perhaps beyond, that of humanity, is contingent on the receptivity of a people to the founding and grounding words of the “poet of poets” Hölderlin, who calls Dasein to participate in the awakening to a future that is as of yet indeterminate and historical in the highest degree, wherein, attuned by Hölderlin’s poetry, participants resolutely anticipate the potential “historical” arrival of Being …
The “Reproductive Destiny” Of Women: Constructing Women Solely As Reproductive Entities In Oral Contraceptive Medical Texts, Andrea Carson
The “Reproductive Destiny” Of Women: Constructing Women Solely As Reproductive Entities In Oral Contraceptive Medical Texts, Andrea Carson
Cultural Analysis and Social Theory Major Research Papers
This major research paper analyzes the representation of women and sexual reproduction in Western oral contraceptive medical texts. Drawing on previous feminist and sociological literature on the medicalization of women’s sexuality and reproduction, I suggest that these texts draw upon a particular discourse that confines/restricts the social construction of women as reproductive entities. This study is based on a discourse analysis of 10 oral contraceptive medical texts, published between 1965 and 2007. Drawing upon the theoretical frameworks of feminism and medicalization, I interrogate how womanhood and motherhood become inexplicably linked and how women are homogenised based on their reproductive capacities. …

Hirsch, Sebald, And The Uses And Limits Of Postmemory, Kathy Behrendt
Hirsch, Sebald, And The Uses And Limits Of Postmemory, Kathy Behrendt
Philosophy Faculty Publications
Marianne Hirsch’s influential concept of postmemory articulates the ethical significance of representing trauma in art and literature. Postmemory, for Hirsch, “describes the relationship of children of survivors of cultural or collective trauma to the experiences of their parents, experiences that they ‘remember’ only as the narratives and images with which they grew up, but that are so powerful, so monumental, as to constitute memories in their own right”. Through appeal to philosophical work on memory, the ethics of remembering, and Peter Goldie’s discussion of empathy, I explore the virtues and limitations of Hirsch’s concept of postmemory, and the risks involved …
Talfourd’S Ion: Classical Reception And Gender In Nineteenth-Century Philadelphia, Lee Pearcy
Talfourd’S Ion: Classical Reception And Gender In Nineteenth-Century Philadelphia, Lee Pearcy
Greek, Latin, and Classical Studies Faculty Research and Scholarship
In mid-nineteenth-century Philadelphia, plays with classical subjects were nearly as popular as Shakespeare. Contemporary reac- tion to one of these plays, Thomas Talfourd’s Ion, or The Foundling of Argos, reveals its audiences’ expectations about gender on stage and in society. American audiences, unlike their English counterparts, expected to see the role of Ion played by a woman. Especially in the 1830s, actresses playing Ion faced audiences who expected to see their feminine qualities preserved. They were disguised as a boy on the edge of manhood, but to be successful, the disguise had to fail by preserving their essential character as …
Lessons In Playing: A Current Work Of Art As A Biopolitical Milieu, Tim Stott
Lessons In Playing: A Current Work Of Art As A Biopolitical Milieu, Tim Stott
Conference Papers
This paper will examine how, when certain current works of art are presented as playgrounds, in which previously unknown persons encounter one another, their play is both complexly organised around play objects and other constraints and governed within what Foucault termed a biopolitical milieu. On the one hand, this development changes the values and qualities that might describe aesthetic play, or the play particular to the encounter with works of art. On the other hand, it tests Foucault’s analysis of how biopolitical techniques of governance “make live” and allow players “to be free to be free.”
