University Center for the Humanities Events
With the demise of the Ben Ali and Mubarak regimes in Tunisia and Egypt, Islam’s role in future regimes is a topic under considerable discussion. In light of current events, Dr. Cesari makes two counter intuitive claims. First, she broadens the approach of religion beyond ideas or beliefs by adopting an institutional approach. Second, she introduces State’s actions and policies as a factor in the politicization of Islam. She will ground her demonstration in original data produced in 2011-2012 as the Minerva Chair at the National War College. The findings shed new light on secularity and the role of Islam …

2013 Topic: Primed to Serve, a Benefit of a Liberal Arts Education
In Professor Marshall Gregory's forthcoming book, Good Teaching and Educational Vision: Not the Same Thing as Disciplinary Expertise, he writes of the importance of "[making] some kind of positive contribution to the world: to do something to make the world more sensible or more peaceful or more civil or more intelligent, and more congenial to human flourishing." Write an essay that analyzes how your liberal arts experiences (in your core and major classes, your community requirements, your service work, or other experiences) have inspired or prepared you …
Unsettling The Bildungsroman: Reading Contemporary Ethnic American Women's Fiction, By Stella Bolaki., Ania Spyra
Unsettling The Bildungsroman: Reading Contemporary Ethnic American Women's Fiction, By Stella Bolaki., Ania Spyra
English
Stella Bolaki gives us in Unsettling the Bildungsroman a useful review of the rich corpus of Bildungsroman scholarship already existing, invoking Franco Moretti, Iris Marion Young, Bonnie Hoover Braendlin, Martin Japtok, Rosemary Marangoly George, Pin-chia Feng, and many others. In order to situate her own intervention in this field, she goes back to early definitions of the traditional Bildungsroman, which saw radical individualism and upward mobility as the most desired end of the Bildung’s trajectory.

Enabling Faculty To Write; A Short Course On Successful Scholarly Publication For Faculty At A Liberal Arts College, Carolyn Richie, David Mason, Michael Zimmerman
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
This paper describes a course on scholarly publication that was offered to faculty at a liberal arts college. The course was designed to increase scholarly productivity by offering information and resources, developing a sense of community, and showing how teaching and research can co-exist for faculty with heavy teaching loads. The course was innovative because faculty who differed in terms of discipline and experience orchestrated it, and the participants comprised a similarly diverse group. Lessons learned from implementation of the course are shared, as well as the results of a survey administered to participants on its conclusion.

Must Do @ VCU is a set of annual collegial activities that can be performed throughout the year, by faculty, staff and students. These VCU-centered activities are considered to be the things that give VCU its identity. The goal of Must Do @ VCU is to generate a sense of community and of belonging to the University. VCU is a relatively new University and its traditions are therefore not well-established. Must Do @ VCU aims to build on shared experiences as a method to establish VCU culture.

Theme one in the Quest for Distinction is for VCU to become a leader among national research universities in providing all students with high quality learning/living experiences focused on inquiry, discovery, and innovation in a global environment. Quest is grounded in a commitment to providing students with a diversity of experiences which are available at a premiere public research university. The goal of this project is to take advantage of the wealth of research resources at the Medical College of Virginia Campus, coordinate cross campus efforts to facilitate the use of these resources and increase faculty participation in mentoring undergraduate …
