Transient Motel, Bryce Hammond Jan 2013

Transient Motel, Bryce Hammond

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

"Transient Motel" is an exhibition that investigates the interactions of people and physical environments in low-income areas of Daytona Beach, Florida. The purpose of the exhibition is to raise social awareness of low-income communities among the public through visual art. Interactions between motel guests were documented as first-hand sound recordings of conversations, interviews and other activities. These recordings are projected through speakers within a constructed life-sized replica of the motel rooms in which they were recorded. Found and appropriated furniture and fixtures from the actual rooms are arranged within the replica as objects of art to familiarize the public with …

The Role Of Christian Faculty In Restoring Accounting Professionalism, Joshua Sauerwein Jan 2013

The Role Of Christian Faculty In Restoring Accounting Professionalism, Joshua Sauerwein

Faculty Publications - College of Business

In light of decreasing public perception, The Pathways Commission of the American Accounting Association currently drew increased attention to the study of ethics in the accounting curriculum. In spite of decades of implementation and research, accounting education has struggled to define effective objectives and delivery methods of ethics education. Further, there is evidence accounting professors are reticent to teach ethics courses. This paper explores the unique voice of faculty at faith-based institutions in this discussion. Given the unique incentive structures, familiarity with integration, and freedom to be more student-centered, Christian faculty have much to contribute to accounting ethics, research, and …

From Hegel To Paz: Re-Reading Orientalism In Latin American Writing, Koichi Hagimoto Jan 2013

From Hegel To Paz: Re-Reading Orientalism In Latin American Writing, Koichi Hagimoto

Hipertexto

Over the past few decades, the presence of Asia in the history of Latin American literature has received considerable scholarly attention. An increasing number of studies on Asia in relation to Latin American politics and economy has been accompanied by a growing interest in cultural relations between these geographically distant regions. While the trans-Atlantic ties between Europe and Latin America have been scrutinized by critics for many years, the analysis of a trans-Pacific connection is still considered to be a relatively new subject. In general, previous research can be divided into two main branches. On the one hand are the …

“Ilustrando” A Rosario De Velasco: Desarrollo De Una Estética, Beatriz Caamaño Alegre Jan 2013

“Ilustrando” A Rosario De Velasco: Desarrollo De Una Estética, Beatriz Caamaño Alegre

Hipertexto

The “Carousel Effect” In Forensic Research, Daniel Cronn-Mills, Stephen M. Croucher Jan 2013

The “Carousel Effect” In Forensic Research, Daniel Cronn-Mills, Stephen M. Croucher

National Forensic Journal

Our purpose is to determine if an anecdotal pattern we have seen emerging at the National Communication Association (NCA) conference holds true. We have noticed that forensic panels at NCA, and specifically individual events (IE) panels, appear to revolve around similar themes. Scholars interested in IE issues may be repeating themselves. The result is a “carousel effect”: the papers/panels go round‘n‘round the same ideas. Our analysis identified two findings: (1) 25 research themes are evident in forensics and three themes comprise the focus of most of the research; (2) qualitative analysis showed repetition among the titles of forensic research. We …

Universal Design In First-Year Composition – Why Do We Need It, How Can We Do It?, Danielle Nielsen Jan 2013

Universal Design In First-Year Composition – Why Do We Need It, How Can We Do It?, Danielle Nielsen

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

Ensuring that all students can access information, demonstrate mastery, and feel comfortable in the classroom is important, yet first-year composition faculty may find reaching the diverse populations in their classrooms daunting. Learning styles, comfort levels with writing and English language skills, disabilities, and family life impact all students, leaving us to wonder how best to facilitate student success. This essay, in taking up the question of universal student success, explores Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in the first-year composition classroom and its benefits to both students and teachers. I first define Universal Design for Learning and then attend briefly to …

""More Than Slightly Mad": Beverley Nichols And The Merry Hall Trilogy.", Joshua Adair Jan 2013

""More Than Slightly Mad": Beverley Nichols And The Merry Hall Trilogy.", Joshua Adair

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

This essay analyses Beverley Nichols’s Merry Hall trilogy—frequently dismissed as ‘garden writing’—as an often overlooked form of queer literature. Using Jack Halberstam’s theories about queer failure, this essay examines the ways in which the now relatively obscure author was able to commodify himself and his lifestyle for a specific audience. In so doing, the author argues, he attempted to further the cause of queer acceptance in the process, even to the detriment of what some consider could have been a more important or worthwhile career.

Antidosis For A Forensics Life: An Isocratic Defense Of Modern Practices Of Competitive Forensics, Aaron Duncan Jan 2013

Antidosis For A Forensics Life: An Isocratic Defense Of Modern Practices Of Competitive Forensics, Aaron Duncan

National Forensic Journal

The forensics community is under attack from inside and outside the coaching profession. It is important that we as coaches defend our practices and justify the value of the activity. Despite his prominence in his own time and his influence over the development of rhetoric, the work of Isocrates has not been utilized to craft a defense of forensics. Similar to the situation we face today, Isocrates also had to defend his practices as a teacher of rhetoric. Using his works Antidosis and Against the Sophist, I attempt to craft a defense for the practices of the modern forensics community.

Analysis Of Gender Relations In The Industrial Community Of Aguirre, Puerto Rico, Alejandra Alvarez Jan 2013

Analysis Of Gender Relations In The Industrial Community Of Aguirre, Puerto Rico, Alejandra Alvarez

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

This thesis is a study of the gender relations of the residents of Aguirre, Puerto Rico, between 1940 and 1991. The primary goal of the project was to explore how gender roles and relations in the Aguirre community were impacted by the social class system introduced by the Aguirre Sugar Company. This project was based on the interpretation of the past and present situation of the Aguirre community using oral history, by conducting a series of interviews among its residents. The interviews resulted in three main themes. First, the concepts of `normal and natural' were used to distinguish gender roles. …

Technology And Culture: Humans Inventing Themselves, William Paul Haas Jan 2013

Technology And Culture: Humans Inventing Themselves, William Paul Haas

Community Scholar Publications

Since the ancient Greek myth of Prometheus who stole fire from the god, Zeus, humans have been befuddled by their own cleverness. We make useful tools and devices which seem to free humans for higher pursuits only to discover that the unintended consequences demand that newer and even more clever devices be invented. Sooner or later we find out that the instruments of our technologies are shaping our destiny rather than the other way around. Throughout history this struggle has gone on till the present when the consequences of technological progress seem to many to be overwhelming. If culture is …

On Reading Julian Of Norwich, Luke William Mills Jan 2013

On Reading Julian Of Norwich, Luke William Mills

Quidditas

This essay focuses on Julian’s intended audience, claiming that it is more limited than one might at first assume. This leads to a discussion of Julian’s use of paradox, her abrupt changes in modes of discourse, and the conclusion that unless her work is read according to the Augustinian rubric of love, it will be misunderstood.

Self And Others: The Work Of 'Care' In Foucault's Care Of The Self, James Wong Jan 2013

Self And Others: The Work Of 'Care' In Foucault's Care Of The Self, James Wong

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Recent discussions on Foucault's work on the care of the self have centred on its apparent excessive individualist focus. Ella Myers for example argues that the practices of the care of the self do not correct the depoliticizing effects of disciplinary power and biopower. Amy Allen takes Foucault to task for his account of the care of the self because the relations with others in Foucault's account are inadequate for the formation of an ethical subject. In this paper I offer an alternative interpretation of Foucault account of the care of the self. I argue that the social and reciprocal …

Home // A Site Of Exploration, Delaney Vartanian

Art Honors Papers

From the interior architecture to the furnishings and objects that inhabit it, a lived space plays an intimate role in the unfolding of daily life. Without pause or question, consistent interaction between body and space lends itself to pattern and routine. Domesticity hovers as a romantic ideal rooted in history, disparate from the present situation. When nostalgia for a domestic ideal abates, one may interact with and acknowledge a lived space anew. This body of work explores and questions normative ideas of the home and their translation into the material environment. A lived environment as a site of investigation can …

Central Falls Welcome Sign Project, Lindsay Guastafeste, Elyssa Roketenetz, Jorge Saenz, Arnold Robinson

Graphic Design

Our inspiration for this modern style welcome sign came mostly from the welcome sign for Vancouver, Canada. This approach would give Central Falls a look of it’s own among the more traditional syle signs of surrounding towns. The double paneled structure design of this option would make for the option of having a bilingual sign, showcasing the multi-cultural heritage of the City.
