Ufnau An Island In Switzerland's Lake Zurich A Hamlet In The American State Of Texas, Martha Kumin-Jurt Feb 2012

Ufnau An Island In Switzerland's Lake Zurich A Hamlet In The American State Of Texas, Martha Kumin-Jurt

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Ufnau Island is a wonderfully quiet place that has kept its uniqueness and unspoilt nature, withstanding the turmoils of time. In 965 AD, Emperor Otto the Great gave the island and other estates bordering Lake Zurich to the Benedictine Abbey of Einsiedeln. His wife, Empress Adelheid, was the grandchild of Reginlinde, the founder of the Ufnau church. We can assume that the Empress prompted her husband to make this donation.

Correlating The Nevius Method With Church Planting Movements: Early Korean Revivals As A Case Study, Wesley L. Handy Feb 2012

Correlating The Nevius Method With Church Planting Movements: Early Korean Revivals As A Case Study, Wesley L. Handy

Liberty Theological Review

John Nevius served as a missionary to China in the late nineteenth-century. From his field experience, Nevius argued for radical changes in missionary methodology. His greatest influence may have been on the mission to Korea beginning in the 1890s. David Garrison, currently serving in South Asia, served for several years in influential administrative roles within the International (formerly Foreign) Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. He studied and advocated Church Planting Movements [CPM], necessitating a change in contemporary missionary methodology. Both men have made major contributions to the practice of missions. This article endeavors to show the similarities between …

An Application Of Discourse Analysis Methodology In The Exegesis Of John 17, Thomas W. Hudgins Feb 2012

An Application Of Discourse Analysis Methodology In The Exegesis Of John 17, Thomas W. Hudgins

Liberty Theological Review

This study applies discourse analysis methodology to the study of the seventeenth chapter of John. Instead of adopting the typical three-fold division of Jesus' prayer based upon the three referents (Jesus, the immediate disciples, and future disciples), greater attention is given to Jesus' requests and final commitment, the mainline verbs. By giving more structural significance to the mainline verbs, the structural division and natural outline of Jesus' prayer become more evident.

Perichoresis In Gregory Nazianzen And Maximus The Confessor, Brian T. Scalise Feb 2012

Perichoresis In Gregory Nazianzen And Maximus The Confessor, Brian T. Scalise

Liberty Theological Review

The doctrine of perichoresis applied to Trinity is the mutual coinherence or interpentration of the Persons of the Godhead. Applied to Christology, perichoreo is, first, the reciprocal passing of characteristics and titles between the divine and human natures hypostatically united in Yeshua. Secondly, it also describes the distinct but intimate union between Christ's natures. Historically, the Trinitarian use of perichoresis grew out of the christological use of perichoreo first developed by Gregory Nazianzen (A.D. 4th century) and then, subsuquently, explained by Maximus the Confessor (A.D 7th century). Maximus, often directly commenting on Gregory's use of perichoreo, seeks to expound …

The Burden Of Knowing: Camus, Qohelet, And The Limitations Of Human Reason, Justin K. Morgan Feb 2012

The Burden Of Knowing: Camus, Qohelet, And The Limitations Of Human Reason, Justin K. Morgan

Liberty Theological Review

In one of the most influential works of the twentieth century, The Myth of Sisyphus, Albert Camus writes this: “This heart within me I can feel, and I judge that it exists. This world I can touch, and I likewise judge that it exists. There ends all my knowledge, and the rest is construction.” Here, Camus addresses what he believes to be one of the main sources of the absurd: the limitations of human reason. He claims that his inability to fully understand human reality creates a gap between his existence and its meaning, and, in effect, renders the …

Ignacio Manuel Altamirano's Journey From 'Indio Puro' To Cultural Mestizo: Indigenous Identity, Mestizaje, And Nationalism In Nineteenth-Century Mexico, Angelica Sanchez-Clark Feb 2012

Ignacio Manuel Altamirano's Journey From 'Indio Puro' To Cultural Mestizo: Indigenous Identity, Mestizaje, And Nationalism In Nineteenth-Century Mexico, Angelica Sanchez-Clark

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

Like many Mexican Liberal intellectuals, Ignacio Manuel Altamirano (b. Tixtla, Guerrero, 1834; d. San Remo, Italy, 1893) played a central role in defining the role that the mestizo—and, by force of circumstance, the Indian—would play in the formation of national identity after Mexicos independence from Spain. This dissertation examines Altamirano's literary and political works, as well as his personal correspondence, and his experiences as a soldier, educator, and politician, in order to understand how Altamirano, represented as an 'indio puro' who underwent the transformation to mestizo, exemplifies the link between Mexico's colonial past and its struggle to define its national …

Glenn Clark, Judith Owens, And Greg T. Smith, Eds., City Limits: Perspectives On The Historical European City, Fiona Williamson Feb 2012

Glenn Clark, Judith Owens, And Greg T. Smith, Eds., City Limits: Perspectives On The Historical European City, Fiona Williamson

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

This extensive collection of 13 essays centres on relationships of time and space, place and actor in early-modern and modern urban society and culture. Markedly inter-disciplinary, this volume makes a timely contribution to urban historiography. Indeed, City Limits is ample proof of just how much urban history has developed over recent years, from a rather niche genre to cutting-edge mainstream history. More than this, the collection’s themes and methodology are of value not only to urban historians, but scholars of society, gender, politics and culture more broadly. As a result, the collection offers a far-reaching and comprehensive contribution to the …

Mentoring Men For The Master, International: The Unique Man, Ministry, And Model Of Discipleship, Mark Keith Huckaby

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this project is to research, illuminate, and communicate the model of discipleship developed by Dr. William L. Bennett of Mentoring Men for the Master, International (MMM). This project will examine the biblical nature of mentoring, and the history, philosophy, development, organization, functionality, and effectiveness of this unique model through the use of primary sources: interviews with Bennett, his writings, interviews with mentees, an online survey, and personal analysis. Supportive discipleship resources undergird the research. Special attention will be given to Bennett's call, influence, and involvement in the establishment and operation of MMM as its Founder and President.

Word And Place In Irish Typography, Brian Dixon Feb 2012

Word And Place In Irish Typography, Brian Dixon

Articles

Toponomic typography, or place-name typography, is not, in any sense a formal discipline. It is, however, common for typographers to find themselves setting the names of locations and settlements within a diverse range of projects. Wayfinding solutions, public transport information material and road signage are but some examples of the instances in which the designer is required to represent and visually interpret those words which mean so much to so many.

‘But my mind was too confused … so with a kind of madness growing upon me, I flung myself into futurity … What strange developments of humanity, what wonderful advances upon our rudimentary civilization, I thought, might not appear when I came to look into the dim elusive world that raced and fluctuated before my eyes. I saw great and splendid architecture rising about me, more massive than any buildings of our own time, and yet, it seemed, built of glimmer and mist … the earth seemed very fair. And so my mind came round to the business of stopping.’ …
