Honor The King. Yes, But Emulate The King?, Michael E. Cafferky Feb 2012

Honor The King. Yes, But Emulate The King?, Michael E. Cafferky

Faculty Works

In seeking to discern God's will for their lives, top-echelon Christian leaders would do well to consider the biblical ideals embedded in the concept of kingship. The paper explores the biblical characteristics of the ideal king with the goal of identifying lessons for contemporary top-echelon leaders. It also reviews the connection between creation and kingship and the biblical concept of the Kingship of God, biblical guidance available in the selection, anointing and annual renewal of the king, and the duties and role of the king. It draws lessons regarding contemporary top-echelon Christian leaders in terms of personal traits, behaviors and …

Estudio Sociolinguistico De La Marca Diferencial De Objeto Directo (Dom) En Dos Variedades Del Espanol Contemporaneo, Sonia Balasch Rodriguez

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

This sociolinguistic-variationist investigation sheds light on two little-studied issues concerning Spanish DOM, or variable use of a before animate direct objects (DOs), in vernacular language: the complex interaction of co-occurring linguistic (type of verb; definiteness, specificity, grammatical number, topicality, type and syntactic position of DO) and social (speakers age, gender and occupation) features. The statistical analysis of over 1000 tokens of oral Spanish of Mérida, Venezuela, and Madrid, Spain, indicates that although a+OD is used more in Madrid (61% vs. 46%), both varieties show markedly parallel linguistic conditioning: the lexical effect of certain verbs (tener, ver, conocer, among others), as …

What Lies Ahead For The Oecd?, Richard Woodward Feb 2012

What Lies Ahead For The Oecd?, Richard Woodward

Books/Book Chapters

The “rise of the rest” has prompted questions about the capacity and willingness of the United States to lead the liberal international order established under its post-war hegemony. Some prophesize that stronger connections amongst emerging powers are the basis for a parallel international order parading different rules, norms and institutions. In contrast, Ikenberry argues that the visionary use of US power has woven capitalist and democratic societies together into a uniquely entrenched “Western” order that is “hard to overturn and easy to join.” Prevailing arrangements will condition the environment within which rising powers make their decisions; nevertheless, by joining the …

Family Affairs Newsletter 2012-02-01, Zack Paakkonen

Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)

FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Graven Images, Amish Aesthetics, And The "Affirmative Lie", Laura Fair-Schulz Feb 2012

Graven Images, Amish Aesthetics, And The "Affirmative Lie", Laura Fair-Schulz

Swiss American Historical Society Review

"Can I take your picture?" The answer was obvious, but it was a plumb opportunity to observe how the question would be received, Mr. Yoder merely replied, displaying a typical posture- of humility -practiced among the Amish (head slightly bowed but cocked sideways to maintain eye contact): "...we wouldn't appreciate that." There was nothing angry in his voice, denouncing the "worldliness" of the question, but a soft, rehearsed and purposeful tone.

Responsibility, Michael Christison Feb 2012

Responsibility, Michael Christison

The Intellectual Standard

In our society there is a systematic failure to recognize certain crucial principles about the human condition, especially by those in positions of power. Parents and policy-makers alike focus too greatly on removing personal responsibility and too little on allowing it. The result is a gradual removal of the individual's authority as the arbiter of his or her own life. Part of the reason for this problem is that "responsibility" as a concept has become somewhat ambiguous, and thus, it has become misunderstood. Reaching a solution requires the clarification of what responsibility is and an understanding of why it is …

Pilgrims Of Beauty: Art And Inspiration In 19th Century Italy, Crawford Alexander Mann Iii

Journals

Exhibition Notes, Number 38, Spring 2012. In the 19th century Italy was the most desirable destination for travelers from every corner of Europe and beyond. Thousands crossed mountains, even oceans, to go there, leaving their "barbarous” homelands to study and admire Italy’s unsurpassed aesthetic and cultural riches. A poem in the New England Magazine in 1831 described the goals and ideals of visiting Italy on a European Grand Tour, calling those who did so "pilgrims of beauty.” Like religious pilgrims of centuries past, these lovers of art participated in a ritual journey, a powerful shared experience of Italy’s magnificent landscape, …

Painting Air: Spencer Finch, Spencer Finch, Judith Tannenbaum

Journals

Exhibition Notes, Number 39, Winter 2012. Spencer Finch, an artist known internationally for artwork that captures fleeting or intangible natural phenomena and sensory experiences, received his MFA in Sculpture from RISD in 1989. In the two decades since, Finch has created drawings, watercolors, photography, and video as well as sculpture and installations—selecting mediums and methods that seem best suited to conveying his fascination with light, color, and atmosphere. His focus of attention ranges from a speck of dust seen in a shaft of light in his studio to grand glaciers in New Zealand.

As a graduate student Finch worked in …

The Ministry Of Service: A Critical Practico-Theological Examination Of The Ministry Of Presence And Its Reformulation For Military Chaplains, Mark Tinsley Feb 2012

The Ministry Of Service: A Critical Practico-Theological Examination Of The Ministry Of Presence And Its Reformulation For Military Chaplains, Mark Tinsley

Masters Theses

For centuries, the military chaplaincy has been guided by an applied ministry paradigm known succinctly as the ministry of presence. Although this model has served the chaplaincy well in many ways, it is not without its ideological, theological, biblical, and practical weaknesses. This work purposes to illuminate some of these weaknesses, while at the same time affirming the various strengths of presence ministry. In the end, however, this thesis will propose an alternate ministerial model for the military chaplaincy, namely, the ministry of service. Unlike its presence-ministry counterpart, the ministry of service will be shown to harmonize better with biblical …

Can Design Thinking Have A Social Life Through Networking?, Brenda Duggan Feb 2012

Can Design Thinking Have A Social Life Through Networking?, Brenda Duggan

Articles

‘The design process is best described metaphorically as a system of spaces rather than a predefined series of orderly steps. The steps demarcate different sorts of related activities that together form a continuum of innovation’. (Brown, 2008, 4) This paper addresses two different spaces for examining design thinking — the design research notebook and the digital space, the topic-driven blog. The premise for this paper arises from teaching digital media on a visual communication programme. I wanted to ask the question from my perspective as an educator — if the individual research notebook is a convention or vehicle for design …

Reconsidering The Avant-Garde Through Ritual, Clodagh Emoe Feb 2012

Reconsidering The Avant-Garde Through Ritual, Clodagh Emoe

Articles

This essay seeks to challenge, albeit in a modest capacity, the ostensible understanding of the avant-garde as a failed project. While acknowledging the criticisms arguing the failure of the avant-garde to motivate a new social order by leading cultural commentators, such as Raymond Williams and Peter Bürger, this essay follows critic Hal Foster’s retroactive model of art and theory to reconsider the avantgarde under conditions of enquiry that focus on the enactment of alternate modalities — this being ritual theory. A key concern of Fosters “new articulation” of the avant-garde is an understanding of the critical capacity of art by …

Buttering Up The British: Irish Exports And The Tourist Gaze, Mary Ann Bolger Feb 2012

Buttering Up The British: Irish Exports And The Tourist Gaze, Mary Ann Bolger

Articles

This paper argues that the advertising of Irish exports in the 1960s provided for their consumers a form of ‘tourism without travel’. (1) This concept is borrowed from Mark McGovern, who uses it to describe the experience of the consumer of the ‘Irish pub experience’ in his article ‘”The cracked pint glass of the servant”: the Irish pub, Irish identity and the tourist eye’ in Michael Cronin and Barbara O’Connor (eds) Irish tourism: image, culture, and identity. Clevedon; Buffalo, N.Y.: Channel View Publications, 2003 In particular, Kerrygold butter acted as an especially authentic souvenir of Ireland because it was, as …

Ernst Engelberg (1909-2010): Historian And Anti-Nazi Activist, Mario Kessler

Swiss American Historical Society Review

The life of Ernst Engelberg, historian and anti-Nazi activist, spanned over a century. Born in Imperial Germany, he witnessed World War I, became a political activist during the Weimar Republic, was a refugee during Nazism, and became a leading historian in Communist East Germany, He survived the collapsed of the DDR and he lived for two more decades in the Federal Republic of Germany. Engelberg's itinerary is, therefore, not typical for a professor of history in twentieth-century Germany.
