MPP Published Research
"Though the De Methodis results, for its essential structure and content, from a re-elaboration of a previous unfinished treatise composed in the Fall of 1666—now known, after Whiteside, as The October 1666 tract on fluxions ([22], I, pp. 400-448)—, the introduction of the term ‘fluxion’ goes together with an important conceptual change concerned with Newton’s understanding of his own achievements. I shall argue that this change marks a crucial step in the origins of analysis, conceived as an autonomous mathematical theory."

Grammy-nominated saxophonist Miguel Zenón and an array of supporting talent present a world premiere song cycle reflecting the myriad ways in which Puertoriqqueños define their identity. No matter the location - be it New York, New Jersey or countless places around the world - those that have emigrated from La Isla del Encanto (The Enchanted Isle) have a story to tell, and all would do well to listen.Over the past ten years, Miguel Zenón has blazed an incendiary trail across the jazz pantheon by consistently challenging the established notions of what jazz can be. His fusion of Puerto Rican “plena” …

A Brief Research On 1936 Soviet Constitution Under Joseph Stalin, Jingyuan Qian
A Brief Research On 1936 Soviet Constitution Under Joseph Stalin, Jingyuan Qian
The Macalester Review
The mission of this paper is to examine the Soviet Union's first constitution in 1936. It attempts to analyze how the social and economic conditions presented in USSR, as well as the personality of Joseph Stalin, stimulated the need to make a constitution. It also attempts to evaluate the influence of this constitution in the contemporary Soviet Society. I would like to thank Prof. Weisensel for his kind review and precious suggestions on this research paper.
On Chinese Foreign Policy: A Big Stick, An Equally Big Carrot, Hannah K. Fishman
On Chinese Foreign Policy: A Big Stick, An Equally Big Carrot, Hannah K. Fishman
The Macalester Review
This paper attempts to provide a framework for analyzing China's newfound assertiveness. Does a rising China pose a systemic threat to the world order, or will Beijing's rise be characterized by what policy officials refer to as a "Peaceful Rise"? This paper argues that China is "building a bigger stick and a bigger carrot" to increase its hard and soft power capabilities; however, this policy won't necessarily pose a threat. The United States must strengthen Western-central international institutions and guide Beijing into this framework if the US wants to see a "Peaceful Rise."
The Mother-Love Myth: The Effect Of The Provider-Nurturer Dichotomy In Custody Cases, Kalie Caetano
The Mother-Love Myth: The Effect Of The Provider-Nurturer Dichotomy In Custody Cases, Kalie Caetano
The Macalester Review
This paper is a discursive analysis that evaluates the effect of gender stereotypes relating to parenting roles and how they have influenced custody cases. Specifically it looks at the historically gendered distinction between the provider (typically the father) and the nurturer (typically the mother) and speculates as to how those identities may have initially formed in US society, what changes they have undergone and how these stereotypes still affect family court outcomes in cases of divorce. Particular focus is given to an article appearing in Working Mother magazine entitled “Custody Lost,” detailing a new trend in custody cases, which allegedly …

Does Mooch The Cat Speak French?, Frank Bramlett
Does Mooch The Cat Speak French?, Frank Bramlett
English Faculty Publications
In the 1990s, I lived in Athens, Georgia, where I was a doctoral student in linguistics. I read the newspaper almost every day, and I started reading a comic strip called Mutts, by Patrick McDonnell. I loved the strip — the sweetness and good intentions of the dog, Earl, was paired with the slightly self-centered cat, Mooch, who also happened to be not quite as smart as Earl in many ways. These two characters are neighbors who live in an urban area that is best characterized as a city in the northeastern United States.
In the series that this …
