La Noche De Los Mayas: A Misunderstood Film And Its Music, Abderrahman Anzaldua Feb 2012

La Noche De Los Mayas: A Misunderstood Film And Its Music, Abderrahman Anzaldua

The Hilltop Review

The intention of this study is to explore and evaluate the film La Noche de los Mayas. I will research the making of the movie and what surrounded production in 1939. In addition to this, I will seek a perspective of the music of Revueltas and its relation with the film. With this research I intend to acknowledge the importance that this film had in its time, and expectantly decipher the enigma that impedes its popularity today compared to other films of the 'Golden Age' of cinema in Mexico.

Hope, Elba Marcell Rivera Rodriguez

The Hilltop Review

This drawing—painted on the surface of one of the interior doors located in the first floor at East Hall—shows the preoccupation of people about the uncertain future of East Campus. In one way or another, it has kept awake my sensibility toward how educational institutions can affect community not only academically, but also personally, and how people consider education as a one of the foremost elements for progress. Location: East Hall, First Floor. Original painting by unknown artist.

The Art And Beauty Of Flight, Edmond Ing Huang Tan Feb 2012

The Art And Beauty Of Flight, Edmond Ing Huang Tan

The Hilltop Review

This picture nicely represents the art and gracefulness of flight with the beauty of sunset in a tranquil setting. In the picture is a powered paragliding, also known as paramotoring in the plains of Nebraska. The ability to fly both low and slow safely, the 'open' feel, the minimal equipment and maintenance costs, the portability, minimally regulated and requires no license are claimed to be this type of flying's greatest merits. Paramotors can be flown during any season of the year anywhere but not in high wind conditions which typically means at low Sun azimuths as shown in the picture …

Mousetraps And How To Avoid Them: The Convergence Of Utilitarian And Scientific Cases For Limiting The Mouse Model In Biomedical Research, Cynthia Townley, Brett Lidbury Feb 2012

Mousetraps And How To Avoid Them: The Convergence Of Utilitarian And Scientific Cases For Limiting The Mouse Model In Biomedical Research, Cynthia Townley, Brett Lidbury

Between the Species

The primary aim of biomedical research is to discover and develop new knowledge to advance human medicine. Frequently a ‘mouse model’ is taken to be a necessary step towards understanding a disease, biological mechanism or intervention. We argue for caution with respect to the mouse model: theoretical reasons, meta-analyses of empirical data, and viable alternatives all support a more restricted use of animals in laboratories than is current practice. On its own terms, a utilitarian scientific justification for using animals in biomedical research converges more closely with welfarist claims than is usually recognised.

A Multifaceted Analysis Of Early Stage Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Data, Madhusmita Behera Feb 2012

A Multifaceted Analysis Of Early Stage Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Data, Madhusmita Behera

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Some early stage NSCLC patients have a better survival prospects than others. In any event, the long-term prognosis for NSCLC patients is poor. Various measures were investigated to gain a better understanding of those patient characteristics that confer better survival or predict disease recurrence. A dataset comprised of stage 1 NSCLC patients (n=162) that underwent resection was investigated. Clinical variables (CVs) and tissue microarray (TMA) images with DNA repair protein and standard H&E expressions were investigated. Patients were dichotomized into two groups by survival characteristics and logistic regression (LR) modeling was used to predict favorable survival outcome. Various patient strata …

Tales Of Empire: Orientalism In Nineteenth-Century Children's Literature, Brittany Renee Griffin Feb 2012

Tales Of Empire: Orientalism In Nineteenth-Century Children's Literature, Brittany Renee Griffin

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Children's literature often does not hold the same weight in the studies of a culture as its big brother, the novel. However, as children's literature is written by adults, to convey information which is important for a child to learn in order to be a functioning member of that society, it can be analyzed in the same way novels are, to provide insight into the broad sweeping issues that concerned the adults of that era. Nineteenth-century British children's literature in particular reveals the deep-seated preoccupation the British Empire had with its eastern colonies, and shows how England's relationship to those …
