Christian Mysticism As A Threat To Papal Traditions, Hayley E. Pangle
Christian Mysticism As A Threat To Papal Traditions, Hayley E. Pangle
Grand Valley Journal of History
A human universal found across many of the world's cultures is the mystical aspect of a religion that serves, in many ways, as a reaction against the dogmatic, ritualistic tradition of the same religion. Christian mystics of medieval Europe presented a direct confrontation to papal traditions in that they challenged the church through their theological interpretations of scripture, their graphic visions, and their threat to established gender roles.
Korean Perceptions Of Chastity, Gender Roles, And Libido; From Kisaengs To The Twenty First Century, Katrina Maynes
Korean Perceptions Of Chastity, Gender Roles, And Libido; From Kisaengs To The Twenty First Century, Katrina Maynes
Grand Valley Journal of History
The kisaengs were highly educated performing artists that contradicted the historical view that Korean women should be chaste, quiet, and inconspicuous. Beginning in the twentieth century, kisaengs declined in popularity as sexual services became widely available, and despite the abiding insistence on chastity, millions of Koreans became involved in the prostitution industry. Although the traditional kisaengs have disappeared, the sexual and social oppression that has pervaded throughout Korean history has resulted in the enduring dominance of the prostitution industry. This paper accordingly traces the historical foundation of Korean kisaengs, analyzing the contradictions they posed to traditional values and accounting for …

Race, Ethnicity, And Exclusion In Group Identity, Rochelle Milne Burnaford
Race, Ethnicity, And Exclusion In Group Identity, Rochelle Milne Burnaford
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The current project investigates exclusion in terms of racial/ethnic identity and group behavioral norms. Research concerning the "black sheep effect" evidences the tendency for group members to derogate a fellow in-group member who has violated an important social norm (Marques, Yzerbyt, & Leyens, 1988). Similarly, Oyserman's (2007) model of identity-based motivation argues that any group identity can shape behavior through a process of identity infusion such that group members are motivated to behave in ways that are in-group identity-infused and equally avoid behaviors that are out-group identity-infused. Finally, identity misclassification research provides evidence that individuals feel threatened by the notion …
The Causes And Effects Of Get Tough: A Look At How Tough-On-Crime Policies Rose To The Agenda And An Examination Of Their Effects On Prison Populations And Crime, Cheyenne Morales Harty
The Causes And Effects Of Get Tough: A Look At How Tough-On-Crime Policies Rose To The Agenda And An Examination Of Their Effects On Prison Populations And Crime, Cheyenne Morales Harty
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The paper analyzes the rise of get-tough crime legislation to the American public policy agenda and examines the effects of these policies on crime and inmate populations. Get-tough policies analyzed include sentencing reform, the War on Drugs and collateral consequences. Because there is no empirical literature on the effect of collateral consequences on crime, the paper employed an OLS regression model partly derived from institutional anomie theory to test for criminogenic effects. The study then employed OLS regression analysis to determine the affect of these independent variables on crime rates in each of the 50 states. The study concluded that …

Bahasa Melayu Di Kerajaan Buton (Studi Berdasarkan Naskah Kuno Koleksi Abdul Mulku Zahari Di Buton), La Niampe
Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya
Buton is one of the Malay Kingdoms located in Southeast Sulawesi. As time went by, more and more people from the Malay world came to Buton. This was due to the strategic position of Buton as a trade route in Eastern Nusantara. In addition, this movement was encouraged by the intention to spread Islam. As part of the Malay Kingdoms, the use of the Malay language was indispensable. The script collection of ancient texts of the Buton Kingdom (Abdul Mulku Zahari’s collection) indicates that the Malay language was taken as one of the official languages used in the kingdom, alongside …

Dekonstruksi Sistem Patriarki Dan Pencarian Identitas Novelis Perempuan Indonesia Tahun 2000-An, Wiyatmi Wiyatmi
Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya
This article is intended to understand the phenomenon of women writers in Indonesian literature in the 2000s. Their literary works emerged amid a literary field dominated by male writers. Viewed from a feminist perspective, these women writers strive to assert their position by attempting to deconstruct the patriarchal system. Through their works, they seek identity through literary production and literary criticism. Their existence in Indonesian literature in the 2000s became a pioneering form of women’s rebellious action against the patriarchal system in Indonesian literary history. Through works that received awards from Dewan Kesenian Jakarta and the Khatulistiwa Literary Award, their …

Teori Sastra Marxis Dan Aplikasinya Pada Penelitian Karya Sastra Arab Modern, Fadlil Munawwar Manshur
Teori Sastra Marxis Dan Aplikasinya Pada Penelitian Karya Sastra Arab Modern, Fadlil Munawwar Manshur
Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya
Many works of modern Arabic literature contain themes of class struggle, especially the struggle of the oppressed against the oppressors. Indeed, the theme of class struggle in Arabic literary works serves as a moral and social mirror of Arab society itself. By reviewing modern Arabic literary works from the perspective of Marxist literary theory, these works can be understood as representations of intense social class conflict within Arab society. Therefore, the use of this theory can help reveal more meaningful and authentic interpretations of Arabic literature and avoid the marginalization of Arab literary works in the construction of cultural and …
The Underclass In The Works Of Charles Dickens And Its Marxist Themes, Kukuh Prayitno Subagyo
The Underclass In The Works Of Charles Dickens And Its Marxist Themes, Kukuh Prayitno Subagyo
Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya
In his novels, Dickens delivers important social messages through his empathetic characters living lives of misery, oppression, slavery, degradation, and exploitation under the so-called capitalistic system. These underclass people holler their plight of injustice and crises of the actual social milieu. From a Marxist perspective, these multiple crises are embedded in themes of exploitation, class consciousness, sacrifice, and revolution. Hence, the realism disguised under literary devices could hopefully accomplish dual purposes: both as a means of provoking a new kind of “social consciousness” among the bourgeoisie and as a means of raising the proletariat’s class consciousness.
Makna Simbolis Srimpi Lima Pada Upacara Ruwatan Di Desa Ngadireso Poncokusumo Malang, Ninik Harini
Makna Simbolis Srimpi Lima Pada Upacara Ruwatan Di Desa Ngadireso Poncokusumo Malang, Ninik Harini
Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya
In Ngadireso, Poncokusumo, Malang, the Srimpi Lima dance is performed by five dancers wearing similar costumes but different colors of sampur. The floor pattern is rectangular, allowing clockwise movement by the dancers. Moreover, this dance has symbolic meaning due to its function as a ruwatan ceremony for ontang-anting, or an only child who is considered a sukerta child. The aim of this study is not only to describe the performance and function but also the symbolic meaning of the Srimpi Lima dance in the ruwatan ceremony. To obtain a clear description, the researcher applied a qualitative descriptive method through interviews, …
Renegotiating Identities, Cultures And Histories: Oppositional Looking In Shelley Niro's "This Land Is Mime Land", Jennifer Danielle Mccall
Renegotiating Identities, Cultures And Histories: Oppositional Looking In Shelley Niro's "This Land Is Mime Land", Jennifer Danielle Mccall
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
My master's thesis explores the photographic series "This Land is Mime Land," which Shelley Niro made in 1992. Despite this work's complex form and structure, there are currently no sustained studies of this series alone, or books solely dedicated to Niro's art. Instead, "Mime Land" is often discussed in compilations that address a number of Native artists, Western feminist practices, or multiple works in Niro's oeuvre. My thesis fills this gap, as I closely investigate how "Mime Land" asks the viewer to look at visual culture, histories and Niro herself. Bell hooks's definition of the "oppositional gaze" - meaning a …
