Carnival In The Creole City: Place, Race And Identity In The Age Of Globalization, Daphne Lamothe
Carnival In The Creole City: Place, Race And Identity In The Age Of Globalization, Daphne Lamothe
Africana Studies: Faculty Publications
In this essay I argue that Haitian-American artists Edwidge Danticat and Wyclef Jean employ Carnival symbolism to explore the practices and politics of belonging in "global" cities. While meditating on the cultural and social dynamism produced by transnationalism, they resist the impulse to idealize its effects. In song and nonfictional narrative, they reflect also on the ways that historical and structural violence shape the lives of Haitian migrants in creolized cities.

Introduction: Carnival In The Creole City: Place, Race And Identity In The Age Of Globalization, Cynthia Dobbs, Daphne Lamothe, Theresa Tensuan
Africana Studies: Faculty Publications
This cluster of "Life Stories from the Creole City" brings together essays that focus on figures negotiating subjectivity within different "creole cities" at specific historical junctures, as these urban spaces become compelling sites for narrating subjectivity in negotiation with forces of globalization, diaspora, and cosmopolitanism. The essays variously illuminate the difficulties and payoffs associated with narrating lives in—and of—porous urban space.

Eva Rossmann’S Mystery Novel «Russen Kommen» The Russians Are Coming: New Crimes, Old Fears, And Intercultural Alliances, Heike Henderson
World Languages Faculty Publications and Presentations
Eva Rossmann's mystery novel Russen kommen, the tenth in a popular series, takes up a hot topic in Austria’s tourism industry: the tensions surrounding the recent influx of newly rich Russian visitors. This article uses Rossmann's mystery as a case study to examine the impact of global culture and transnational investments on Austrian society. Trapped between provincialism and globalization, Austrians are forced to revisit old fears and find new ways of dealing with contemporary challenges. Due to its wide appeal, popular culture can lead the way in these negotiations.
Neither Single Nor Alone: Elizabeth Cellier, Catholic Community, And Transformations Of Catholic Women’S Piety, Lisa Mcclain
Neither Single Nor Alone: Elizabeth Cellier, Catholic Community, And Transformations Of Catholic Women’S Piety, Lisa Mcclain
History Faculty Publications and Presentations
Catholic midwife Elizabeth Cellier wrote during the volatile decade between the Popish Plot and the Glorious Revolution. Her writings treat subjects as diverse as the torture of Catholic prisoners in London jails, Presbyterian plots against the monarchy, and the incorporation of female midwives to form a college and run a foundling hospital in London. Though Cellier was widely vilified by critics for her faith, this article explores Cellier through the lens of her own understanding of Catholicism. Cellier’s writings reveal how she participated in several well-established Catholic networks that provided her with the means to practice her faith and share …
Beating Down The Lowly: The Criminalization Of The Homeless And Alternative Solutions, Amber Will
Beating Down The Lowly: The Criminalization Of The Homeless And Alternative Solutions, Amber Will
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
In the current economy, the issue of homelessness is increasingly pervading the normal constructs of society. Thousands of men, women, and children struggle to find a place to sleep and enough food to satisfy their hungry stomachs. While many people suffer under these conditions, local governments continue to create new anti-homeless legislation to further eject them out of society. Bans prevent the homeless from urinating, sleeping, camping, and panhandling in public through fines and prison sentences. The laws specifically target the homeless, discriminating against them for actions which are necessary for daily survival. The legal system only further hurts this …
Opening Space: The Relationship Of Contestation Between Women And The State In Nicaragua, Hana Masri
Opening Space: The Relationship Of Contestation Between Women And The State In Nicaragua, Hana Masri
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The relationship between organized women—particularly feminists—and the State in Nicaragua has been one of open contestation. As Daniel Ortega and the FSLN administration continue passing laws that the feminist movements perceive as attacks on women’s rights, the fight between them continues. For the women struggling against the actions of the State, the language of this contestation is often the language of open and closed spaces. They speak of a double closure: the closure of institutional spaces and of opportunities to express their autonomy, especially autonomy over their bodies. However, the perceived lack of space for women to make real change …

What Is Beauty?, Colby Kruger
What Is Beauty?, Colby Kruger
Collection of Engaged Learning
I had always wanted a way to reach out to high school girls who faced the modern complexities of beauty; what is beautiful and how do we decide what is beautiful. My goal, through the teachings of photography, was to show the girls there is beauty all around us - in everyone and everything. The girls learned photographic basics as well as how to capture natural aesthetics. By encouraging their creativity and exploration of beauty, many of the girls found confidence in themselves as females and as artists, and produced beautiful photographs along the way.

Addiction In Alaska: How Alcohol Abuse Is Impacting Community Members In Native Villages Throughout Rural Alaska, Cristina Casillo
Capstone Collection
Across rural Alaska are over 200 Alaska Native villages so isolated, they are only accessible by airplane, boat, and snowmachine. These villages strive to keep their Native culture alive and rich, but continue to struggle against Western influences. Introduced to Alaska Natives by European and Russian explorers in the 1700s, this paper examines how alcohol addiction is affecting community members throughout villages in rural Alaska. The research was conducted in two Iñupiaq Eskimo villages, Point Hope and Selawik, both located above the Arctic Circle in rural Alaska. Drawing from three years of personal observations and a series of interviews, this …

Music, Mood, And Memory: An In-Depth Look At How Music Can Be Used As A Trigger To Elicit Specific Emotional Responses And Associated Memories, Jennifer Lynn Stubing
Music, Mood, And Memory: An In-Depth Look At How Music Can Be Used As A Trigger To Elicit Specific Emotional Responses And Associated Memories, Jennifer Lynn Stubing
Academic Symposium of Undergraduate Scholarship
No matter how humans have evolved over the years, no matter how different the cultures or customs are across seas, every race in the history of humankind has had music. Music and emotions have been intertwined throughout history. While short-term memories are fleeting, it is theorized that music has the potential to become a long-term memory after just one hearing (Eschrich 48).
Music, memories, and emotions have all been proven to intertwine, yet not much research has demonstrated the interrelation of all three. Musicology focuses on the connection between the human psyche and music. The most common use of music …
