Choral Intelligibility When Recording With An Orchestra: An Audio Engineer's Perspective, Michael F. Gates Apr 2012

Choral Intelligibility When Recording With An Orchestra: An Audio Engineer's Perspective, Michael F. Gates

Faculty Publications

From an audio engineer's perspective, producing a recording that features a choir and orchestra requires many careful considerations. It is reasonable to suggest that paramount to the final product is the intelligibility of the sung text. It is well known that the singer's formant, visible as a spectral peak around 3,000 Hz, assists a singer to be heard over an orchestra. Research indicates however that in choral singing this region is much lower in amplitude than in operatic singing. Because of many acoustic variables, the singing may well be masked and the text obscured. Critical listening analysis of recordings of …

The Sociology Of Harriet Martineau In Eastern Life, Present And Past: The Foundations Of The Islamic Sociology Of Religion, Deborah A. Ruigh Apr 2012

The Sociology Of Harriet Martineau In Eastern Life, Present And Past: The Foundations Of The Islamic Sociology Of Religion, Deborah A. Ruigh

Department of Sociology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This paper is a critical analysis of Harriet Martineau’s philosophical stance and epistemological modes, her systematic sociological methodology, her use of this methodology, and her sociology of religion. How to Observe Morals and Manners (1838), Eastern Life, Present and Past (1848), and other relevant works will be used to examine Martineau’s evolving epistemological modes as well as her sociology of religion. How to Observe, Martineau’s treatise on systematic sociological methodology and cultural relativism, will serve as an exemplar for analysis of Martineau’s methodological practice as evidenced in Eastern Life. The research problem herein is three-fold: (1) to examine …

Dead Is Dead: Why 20% Doesn't Matter, John M. Rudy

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public

Over at Cosmic America, Keith Harris beat me to the punch on this one. But Jake can attest to the fact that, since the "news" of the revision of Civil War dead up by 130,000 broke, I have been grumbling on and off.

King's Theatre Queens: Three Successful Women In The Early Classical Era, Ashley Mchugh

2012 Awards for Excellence in Student Research & Creative Activity - Documents

In the early Classical era, three particular women are accredited with encompassing the vocal style and techniques of the timeframe: Madame Gertrud Mara, Brigida Giorgi Banti, and Mrs. Elizabeth Billington. They were of different nationalities, statuses, educational backgrounds, vocal qualities, and performance strengths. However, they were all frequently associated with similar repertoire, critics and audiences, and companies- especially the King's Theatre in London.

2012 Awards for Excellence in Student Research & Creative Activity - Documents

Graphic narratives around the world have found lhemselves today beirlg read by certain types of readers. Literature scholars focus on elements such as character and plot structure, occupying their minds with what makes literature great and what some graphic nurratives share with that great literature. With a similar attitude, art historians focus on style, composition, and other artistic elements in graphic narratives that connect them to the art history timeline that goes back to cave paintings. Another type of audience exists, one that does not consider what graphic narratives are and whether they belong to an existing formal area …

Housing E.L.'S G.L.S And Married Students: The Story Of Trailers, Barracks, And Apartments At Eastern Lllinois University, Philip Mohr

2012 Awards for Excellence in Student Research & Creative Activity - Documents

Eastern illinois University's campus was small before the 1940s when compared to its size and buildings of today. It handled students by the hundreds, instead of thousands. Except for the women living in Pemberton Hall, students found their own quarters around Charleston. The administration did not consider housing for married students a priority simply because the number of people who were both married and college students made no significant blip on the radar. Then, as many twentieth century narratives go, World War II changed everything. Providing on-campus housing options for postwar populations became a driving force in the development of …

Hot Pink Love, Katherine R. Sloan Apr 2012

Hot Pink Love, Katherine R. Sloan

Theses & Honors Papers

The purpose of this thesis is to explore the definition of power and control in relationships usually between men and women, but not always. The seven screenplays that make up my thesis all examine power that is uniquely feminine. In a power relationship, does the aggressor have all the power or, is he/she given power by the submissive party? The relationships between men and women, as in "Blood, Buzzed," are examined through a sub-cultural lens that explores sadomasochistic behavior. What line one has to cross in order to be a sadist and what personal sacrifices are made in order to …

Buddhist Reductionism And Free Will: Paleo-Compatibilism, Rick Repetti Apr 2012

Buddhist Reductionism And Free Will: Paleo-Compatibilism, Rick Repetti

Publications and Research

This is the second article in a four-article series that examines Buddhist responses to the Western philosophical problem of whether free will is compatible with “determinism,” the doctrine of universal causation. The first article focused on the first publications on this issue in the 1970s, the “early period”; the present article and the next examine key responses published in the last part of the Twentieth century and first part of the Twenty-first, the “middle period”; and the fourth article will examine responses published in the last few years. Whereas early-period scholars endorsed compatibilism, in the middle period the pendulum moved …
