La Sociolinguistique Postcoloniale En Amérique Hispanophone Et En Afrique Francophone : Un Drame Linguistique En Deux Actes, Eva Valenti
Scripps Senior Theses
This thesis analyzes the sociolinguistic situations in postcolonial Latin America and francophone North Africa (the Maghreb) through a comparative lens. Specifically, it examines the ways in which Spain and France’s differing colonial agendas and language ideologies affected the relationships between colonizer and colonized, and, by extension, the role that Spanish and French play(ed) in these regions after decolonization. Finally, it explores how Spain and France’s contemporary discourses frame colonial participation in the two languages’ development, and the psychological effects these ideologies have had on the formerly colonized.

Defining Industry Expectations And Misconceptions Of Art And Technology Co-Creativity, Vanessa C. Brasfield
Department of Computer Graphics Technology Degree Theses
The primary purpose of this study was to establish whether or not students and industry professionals share the same views about what students should be learning in animation education, what skills are necessary, and whether or not students graduating with a bachelor’s degree would be adequately prepared for an entry level position. To establish where misconceptions lie, surveys were issued to three groups: undergraduate students, post-graduate students, and industry professionals. These surveys were then analyzed using paired t-test for validation and question relevance, and ANOVA models to establish whether or not groups shared viewpoints. These data established significance within the …

Theatre: My Undergraduate Experience, Erin Hemming
Theatre: My Undergraduate Experience, Erin Hemming
Honors Theses
For my honors thesis, I wanted to present my entire portfolio of work from my time in the theatre department at Western Michigan University. In the theatre department, we are encouraged to create a portfolio of work during our four years, which will be essential in future job applications as well as in graduate school interviews. This sounded like the perfect concept for my honors thesis: I would create a portfolio of work that would serve me in all of my future endeavors. My preferred presentation setting was URTA, a week-long conference, in which graduate school representatives from various theatre …

Method In Motion: Grounding A Movement Pedagogy In The Lessons Of Stanislavski, Kevin Inouye
Method In Motion: Grounding A Movement Pedagogy In The Lessons Of Stanislavski, Kevin Inouye
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is an exploration of movement pedagogy as a continuation of basic acting lessons from Stanislavski. Using the example of an introductory semester of movement instruction, physical acting and movement concepts are explained in terms of their connection to and derivation from universally accepted acting terminology and ideas. This is put forth as a way to facilitate the synthesis of movement instruction with other acting curriculum, as well as providing a new way to view some familiar acting concepts. Several specific examples are explored in more depth as case studies in physical equivalents to the intellectual, visual, or emotional …
Performing Tennessee Williams, Augustine Correro Iii
Performing Tennessee Williams, Augustine Correro Iii
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is dedicated to illustrating the unique challenges of staging works by the playwright Tennessee Williams, and to making suggestions on how to avoid common pitfalls in production, performance, and direction of his plays. It uses evidence from the playwright’s various biographical works as well as insight and conjecture from the author’s experience to illuminate these challenges and help the reader to avoid hackneyed or ineffective staging practices. It touches on the effect of film adaptations on stage performances; the typical portrayal of American Southern characters onstage; the aural ramifications of Williams’s poetry to a now-visually-centered audience; stylistic elements …

The Role Of Hsp70 In Cancer: A Study Of The Hsp70 / Akt Relationship, John Koren
The Role Of Hsp70 In Cancer: A Study Of The Hsp70 / Akt Relationship, John Koren
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Hsp70 family of molecular chaperones is essential for
protein folding, re-folding misfolded client proteins, clearance
of aberrant client proteins, and can also inhibit programmed
cell death. There are two major cytosolic members of this
family: the constitutive Hsc70, and the inducible Hsp72. Under
stress conditions the Hsp70 family protects the cell from
protein related damage by the induction of Hsp72. Hsc70 and
Hsp72 are highly homologous with minor differences in
substrate binding. In cancers, Hsp72 is commonly induced and
this induction is thought to aid in cancer cell survival. In these
studies we demonstrate the differential regulation of the …
Expatriates' Acculturation Strategies: Going Beyond "How Adjusted Are You?" To "How Do You Adjust?", Matthew Lineberry
Expatriates' Acculturation Strategies: Going Beyond "How Adjusted Are You?" To "How Do You Adjust?", Matthew Lineberry
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Expatriates' degree of adjustment to living and working in a foreign country is well-accepted as an important outcome variable in expatriate management research. However, measures of degree of adjustment do not capture the breadth of strategies expatriates may use to achieve such adjustment, which may be critical for understanding whether expatriates have achieved a healthy and productive orientation to life abroad. Borrowing from research on immigrant populations, this study examines the construct of expatriate acculturation strategies, which characterize expatriates' mode of adjustment along two independent dimensions reflecting maintenance of one's home culture and engagement of the host culture, respectively. One …

Buddhist Hard Determinism: No Self, No Free Will, No Responsibility, Rick Repetti
Buddhist Hard Determinism: No Self, No Free Will, No Responsibility, Rick Repetti
Publications and Research
This is the third article in a four-article series that examines Buddhist responses to the Western philosophical problem of whether free will is compatible with “determinism,” the doctrine of universal causation. The first article (“Earlier”) focused on the first publications on this issue in the 1970s, the “early period.” The second (“Paleo-compatibilism”) and the present articles examine key responses published in the last part of the Twentieth and the first part of the Twenty-first centuries, the “middle period.” The fourth article (“Recent”) examines responses published in the last few years, the “recent period.” Whereas early-period scholars endorsed a compatibilism between …

American Jihad: Understanding The Social Backlash Against Muslim Americans Through The Context Of Ethnotheatre, Sameehan Patel
Honors Projects
I am a brown person. The color of my skin dictates much of how American society has and will interact with me. Whether it is to my advantage or my disadvantage, the cultural fabric of America will isolate who I am because of the color that I am. American culture has racial assumptions embedded within its grain, lending to the alienation and eventual discrimination of certain races. The idea of a marginalized race is no foreign concept in the Anglo American hegemony, but the ever morphing idea of the “other” is my point of inquiry. On September 11th 2001, …

Modelización Social En Dos Novelas Novohispanas: Vida Y Hechos Del Famoso Caballero Don Catrín De La Fachenda Y El Periquillo Sarniento, Wilfrido M. Suárez
Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
