Digital Information Literacy At National Louis University: Embedding And Integrating Information Literacy Into Degree Programs, Deana Greenfield, Rob Morrison Apr 2012

Digital Information Literacy At National Louis University: Embedding And Integrating Information Literacy Into Degree Programs, Deana Greenfield, Rob Morrison

Faculty Publications

This presentation provided an overview of NLU Library faculty's experience developing a new teaching model that enhanced traditional library instruction through embedding in online courses and new courses on digital information literacy. Our integration into undergraduate degree programs with a required library course was the result of engaging with academic stakeholders and being “out in front” with technology. This resulted in a major shift in our roles and workload and brings us deeper into the teaching and learning process. We engaged participants in a discussion of useful strategies to integrate teaching into academic programs, the role and use of technology, …

Romanticism, Blake, And The Politics Of Nature (Flyer), Kevin Hutchings Apr 2012

Romanticism, Blake, And The Politics Of Nature (Flyer), Kevin Hutchings

The Idea of Nature Public Lecture Series

Because politics is a distinctly human activity, we often think of nature as something that exists apart from the political realm. However, in an era of revolutionary turmoil, William Blake, who championed “England’s green and pleasant land” against industrialism’s “dark Satanic Mills,” understood better than any other Romantic poet that nature was subject to myriad political uses. By showing how cultural institutions invoke nature to “naturalize” their authority, Blake reveals that nature can be thoroughly political. Join author and musician Kevin Hutchings as he explores the politics of Blake’s visionary ecology in poetry, painting, and song.

Bulgarian Chalga: Forming A Post-Communist Identity Through Music, Megan Drevits

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

During the mid-1990s, against the background of a dizzyingly unstable economy and a corrupt and transitional political climate, a new genre of popular music rose to prominence in Bulgaria and came to be viewed by many as a complex symbol of this new, post-communist society. Although it has been given several names in its short history, this genre is most commonly known today as chalga, a designation that has a variety of connotations, both purely musical and purely derogatory. At its core, chalga is a fusion music genre that combines elements of Bulgarian folk music, Roma and Turkish music, …

Comic Books Vs. Greek Mythology: The Ultimate Crossover For The Classical Scholar, Andrew S. Latham Apr 2012

Comic Books Vs. Greek Mythology: The Ultimate Crossover For The Classical Scholar, Andrew S. Latham

English Department Theses

The modern, serialized comic book is one of the most underutilized genres of literature in literary criticism today. While it is true that some graphic novels such as Alan Moore's Watchmen and Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns receive scholarly criticism, many monthly titles such as Action Comics or Batman are neglected by most of the scholarly community. The reason for this neglect cannot be traced to one single source, but it is unfortunate considering how valuable serialized comic books can be to modern scholars, particularly classical scholars studying Greek mythology. The similarities between the superheroes of serialized comic books …

A Pedagogical Perspective On Storytelling Through Movement And Dance, Penny Maas Apr 2012

A Pedagogical Perspective On Storytelling Through Movement And Dance, Penny Maas

Theses and Dissertations

Dance in most musical theatre is an assumed visual element and something that is often taken for granted in production. What is its purpose is the question being pondered in this paper. Since Agnes de Mille first presented her legendary dream ballet in Oklahoma! in 1943, theatrical dance has never been the same. She revolutionized the function of dance in theatre forever. No longer would dance merely be used as interludes or divertissements. Though a seemingly simple theatrical concept, to use movement and choreography to either further the plot or to communicate a character’s journey, it is not only much …

The Urban-Rural Dichotomy In The Indonesian Documentaries; "Nona Nyonya?" And "Untuk Apa?", Asri Saraswati Apr 2012

The Urban-Rural Dichotomy In The Indonesian Documentaries; "Nona Nyonya?" And "Untuk Apa?", Asri Saraswati

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The media play a pivotal role in the democratization process in Indonesia and this is among others apparent in the surge of films, both fiction and documentaries that have been produced after the end Suharto's decades of control over the media. It is important to note, however, that compared with fiction films, the documentary genre remains rather unpopular in Indonesia. Indonesian documentary films struggle to depict stories of the subaltern and those living in the "periphery" in order for them to be seen and heard by the greater masses and by those in power - the ones in the "centre" …

Gender Bias In A Patriarchal Society; A Media Analysis On Virginity And Reproductive Health, Billy K. Sarwono Apr 2012

Gender Bias In A Patriarchal Society; A Media Analysis On Virginity And Reproductive Health, Billy K. Sarwono

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Women and health are two very close issues as family health lies most often in the hands of women. Ironically, their awareness toward their own health is still low. Cultural constraints have made single, unmarried women or virgins feel reluctant to go to obgyn clinics, though there is an increasing prevalence of cervical cancer in Indonesia. Related to the role of the media to reduce the number of women with cervical cancer, a question rises. How do the media represent this conflict? The object of the study is a documentary film about several problems faced by women. The unit of …

"Pintu Terlarang"; A Disconcerting Spatial Interpretation Of Urban Dystopia, Bayu Kristianto

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The main character of the film Pintu terlarang (The forbidden door), Gambir, attains success in the art world by making statues of pregnant women. Part of his creative process is to insert dead foetuses into the wombs of the statues. His troubled soul meets a written request for help by a child he encounters in various places. The journey to find the child leads him to a secret door, revealing a terrifying reality of a dehumanized world. The city, commonly characterized by a sense of vastness, is set in opposition to small, enclosed spaces where individuals converse with their utmost …

Dutch-Indonesian Interlanguage; Psycholinguistic Study On Syntax, Sugeng Riyanto Apr 2012

Dutch-Indonesian Interlanguage; Psycholinguistic Study On Syntax, Sugeng Riyanto

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This article focuses on the psycholinguistic study of the syntactic aspects of Dutch-Indonesian interlanguage. The study is based on the interlanguage syntax observed in an oral test given to thirty Indonesian learners of Dutch as a second language, whose purpose is to test the processability theory of Pienemann (2005a, b, c, 2007). The results of the study provide evidence for the validity of Pienemann's theory. Learners who have acquired sentences with the highest level of processing will also already have acquired sentences with a lower level of processing. The results from learners with a high level of Dutch proficiency verify …

Understanding Experience: Reflections On The Empowering Nature Of Story, Sarah Provencal Apr 2012

Understanding Experience: Reflections On The Empowering Nature Of Story, Sarah Provencal

Theses and Dissertations

Technological growth has changed our relationships and interactions within society and theatre artists are calling into question the future of our art form. Are we still essential? And if so, how do we renovate our form in order to relate to our changing society? In my experience, I’ve found that all renovations of our art have one thing in common: the empowering nature of story. Story helps us to understand our experiences in life. It is not the self, the cause, or the goal that is behind the wheel, but the story itself. This thesis explores three instances of the …
