Resurrecting Inanna: Lament, Gender, Transgression, Kimberly Torres
Resurrecting Inanna: Lament, Gender, Transgression, Kimberly Torres
HIM 1990-2015
This essay, which is at once a literary critical examination and a theological exploration of the Hebraic scriptural book of Lamentations in relation to ancient Sumerian lament, employs a mixed critical approach (e.g., form, feminist, postmodern, reader response), to address various lyrical, contextual, and thematic elements common to both the biblical Lamentations and the older Sumerian compositions. Specific focus is given to issues of gender and gender-malleability, as well as the notion of "transgression" and the various meanings that may be attached to this word in various contexts, theological or otherwise. Also addressed is the means by which the lament …
The Pastel Medium Communicating Sexuality And Promiscuity In Late Nineteenth-Century Paris, Adee S. Benartzy
The Pastel Medium Communicating Sexuality And Promiscuity In Late Nineteenth-Century Paris, Adee S. Benartzy
HIM 1990-2015
Throughout the history of art, the pastel medium has been considered a medium of secondary interest. Despite its pulsating textures, vibrant colors, and unique receptivity to touch, this medium has been recognized above all for its swiftness in stroke and subsequent ability of the artist to record images of fleeting moments and ideas almost instantaneously. The focus on the advantageous rapidity of the pastel, however, hindered the pastel medium's potential as a mere preliminary technique to working with grander mediums, such as oil paint, thus failing to recognize the prominence of pastel in capturing character. This research endeavor focuses on …
The Mayor And Early Lollard Dissemination, Angel Gomez
The Mayor And Early Lollard Dissemination, Angel Gomez
HIM 1990-2015
During the fourteenth century in England there began a movement referred to as Lollardy. Throughout history, Lollardy has been viewed as a precursor to the Protestant Reformation. There has been a long ongoing debate among scholars trying to identify the extent of Lollard beliefs among the English. Attempting to identify who was a Lollard has often led historians to look at the trial records of those accused of being Lollards. One aspect overlooked in these studies is the role civic authorities, like the mayor of a town, played in the heresy trials of suspected Lollards. Contrary to existing beliefs that …
The Nature Of Love A Phenomenological Approach, Samantha Schroeder
The Nature Of Love A Phenomenological Approach, Samantha Schroeder
HIM 1990-2015
As I hope to show, a philosophical study of love is highly relevant today, since the sciences have not adequately answered the perennial question: What is love?; Since the time of Socrates, the idea of love and the conception of the human heart have been devalued by thinkers who, by definition, are known as "lovers of wisdom." Considered pejoratively as "the passions," the subject of emotion was deemed inferior to thought centered upon the human faculty of reason. Many studies in the sciences, from biology to psychology, claim to have pointed us to the source of the human experience of …
All Roads Lead Through Rome: Imperial Armatures On The Triumphal Route, Machal E. Gradoz
All Roads Lead Through Rome: Imperial Armatures On The Triumphal Route, Machal E. Gradoz
Classical Mediterranean and Middle East Honors Projects
The cityscape of ancient Rome was filled with opulent buildings that created armatures— fluid, connective thoroughfares throughout the city. These armatures came together to form narrative pathways. The triumphal route, the memorialized, celebratory course of victorious generals, is one such narrative pathway. Among other strategies to legitimize his sole rule, Augustus constructed a self-promoting armature along the triumphal route, thereby linking him with the triumph. This paper examines how the construction of the Augustan armature along the triumphal route promoted Augustus and how the Flavians responded to it in advertising their own legitimacy in the wake of a civil war. …
Flawed And Beloved: The Spiritual Teachers Of Romola And George Eliot, Kathryn Mogk
Flawed And Beloved: The Spiritual Teachers Of Romola And George Eliot, Kathryn Mogk
Global Tides
Victorian novelist George Eliot presents a paradox: her writings seem highly religious and even specifically Christian, but she was an atheist who firmly rejected her Christian upbringing. In this paper, I examine Eliot’s attitude toward religion in the light of her novel Romola. Romola’s conflicted relationship with her mentor, Savonarola, presents a mirror image of Eliot’s own relationship with Christianity. In both cases, a profound message of duty, altruism, and self-sacrifice is presented by a messenger who is flawed by false and contradictory teachings and failure to live up to his own ideals. Romola and Eliot must learn to distinguish …
Theodore Roosevelt And The Boone And Crockett Club: The Saving Of America's Buffalo, Alexandra Mogan
Theodore Roosevelt And The Boone And Crockett Club: The Saving Of America's Buffalo, Alexandra Mogan
Global Tides
The American buffalo is a symbol of the American West. It is well established that this American species faced extinction in the late nineteenth century. Many also know that at the turn of the century, President Theodore Roosevelt was a champion for the protection of America’s natural beauty, including its wildlife. As I began my research on Theodore Roosevelt and his role in conservationism, I discovered that he was involved in wildlife preservation well before his presidency. Most historians, who focus on Roosevelt’s actions while in the Oval Office (1901-1909), have overlooked his early roles in conservationism. Thus, one of …
The Possibility Of Akrasia In The Protagoras And The Republic, Benjamin Kryder
The Possibility Of Akrasia In The Protagoras And The Republic, Benjamin Kryder
Global Tides
Many scholars have suggested that Plato’s accounts of akrasia in the Protagoras and The Republic are incongruent, which has led to a number of attempts at reconciling the account. I defend the view that the accounts do not square up, an explicit difference in Plato’s renderings of the concept of akrasia.

Reimagining The Visual Communications Of The Westcott Community Center, Kathryn Jean Marren
Reimagining The Visual Communications Of The Westcott Community Center, Kathryn Jean Marren
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
I sought to redesign and reimagine the visual materials produced by the Westcott Community Center, a nonprofit organization that serves the local Westcott area as well as the entire metropolitan Syracuse area. The Westcott Community Center is a venue for classes, dramatic performances, celebrations, community meetings, and more.
The Westcott Community Center has many diverse programs and events and is truly an asset to the community. I wanted to update their materials to convey a sense of cohesiveness as well as a more sophisticated and organized design aesthetic. I redesigned the Center’s logo and volunteer application, created a stationery system, …

Verbum
In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.
"Simply turning on the television leads to a bombardment of sights and sounds from around world. The various channels dedicated to news, such as CNN, NBC, BBC, and so on, have allowed people see even the most remote areas of the globe right from their sofas. In an era when such information is heaped onto the public, sorting through the pile is often made a difficult task. When the population is exposed to constant sound bites of Arabs calling for the downfall of disbelievers or of U.S. criticism aimed …

"Dr. Rev. Michael Costanzo asked me to write an article for Verbum 2012. I know Father Costanzo as my family is a member of the Church of the Holy Spirit in Penfield where Father Costanzo often helps out. I thought I would write a little about my experience at St. John Fisher College for the Alumni Corner. The Problem Of Evil And The Existence Of God, Timothy Ryan
The Problem Of Evil And The Existence Of God, Timothy Ryan
Verbum
In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.
"Throughout the history of mankind countless theologians, scholars, and philosophers have grappled with the concept of evil, the existence of God, and if God exists, whether He is omnipotent and representative of infinite goodness. Ever since the first human being gazed up to the heavens and contemplated the origins of natural phenomenon or the reasons dreadful things happen to good people, humanity has engaged in a continuous debate over evil and its relationship to God’s existence and whether He embodies boundless righteousness or tempered vengeance. Numerous scholars and philosophers …

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.
"My 11 year old son has Tourette’s syndrome; an obsessive compulsive disorder; and a germ phobia. He stutters. And periodically has panic attacks. He can be explosive; and destructive. He’s afraid to go to school; and to Church. He feels lonely; and depressed. He wonders why all this had to happen to him, and he sometimes wishes he wasn’t alive."

Teaching As Ministering, Bernard Ricca
Verbum
In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.
"It is sometimes said that we live in violent times, or in a violent world. While it is undoubtedly true that there is much violence in the world, and even overt violence in our schools, it is also true that there is a more subtle violence that permeates our schools. This violence calls for not just teaching, but ministering, and in doing so, provides a lens through which to look at teaching and teachers."

From Martyrs To Mothers To Chick In Choos: The Medieval Female Body And American Women's Popular Literature, Gina M. Sully
From Martyrs To Mothers To Chick In Choos: The Medieval Female Body And American Women's Popular Literature, Gina M. Sully
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Placing the generic conventions of medieval hagiography, Nina Baym's insights about nineteenth-century American sentimental fiction's overplot, and contemporary American women's popular literature into tension illuminates some important commonalities. First, biographers of the medieval virgin saints and authors of contemporary American women's popular literature deploy the same overplot that Baym identifies as characteristic of American women's nineteenth-century popular fiction. Second, in order to define feminine virtue and establish the virtue of their protagonists, nineteenth-century and post-millennial American women writers rework the contrastive tropes by which hagiographers establish their heroines' virtue. Third, struggles for ascendance in the domestic realm gesture toward its …
Mother Knows Best: The Rhetorical Persona Of Michelle Obama And The "Let's Move" Campaign, Monika Bertaki
Mother Knows Best: The Rhetorical Persona Of Michelle Obama And The "Let's Move" Campaign, Monika Bertaki
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Some first ladies are often condemned for being too involved with the presidents' power in politics while other first ladies find themselves condemned for the lack of involvement. First ladies, it seems, are damned if they do and damned if they don't. Consequently, Michelle Obama faces rhetorical problems that in some respects are similar to those of previous first ladies and in other respects are quite different. Along with the criticisms encountered by previous presidential wives, Obama faces the stereotypes African American women have endured since the inception of the nation. Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" campaign serves as a rhetorical …

Johannes Brahms, Vierzehn Deutsche Volkslieder, Woo 34, Nos. 1-14, An Arrangement, Transcription And Pedagogical Rationale For Wind Band, Robert Logan Biles
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This document illustrates how specific educational objectives can be met in the wind band rehearsal through the selection, transcription, and arrangement of the Vierzehn Deutsche Volkslieder, WoO 34, Nos. 1-14 by Johannes Brahms. It further defines the pedagogical appropriateness of these works and their transcriptions by outlining the educational goals that they accomplish.
The resulting wind band transcriptions and arrangements, for use at the secondary and post-secondary levels, are presented in two formats. The first is a convertible transcription where each instrumental part contains transpositions of all of the original vocal parts making it adaptable for various combinations of instruments. …

You Should Know Jack: A Qualitative Study Of The Jack Lalanne Show (1951-~1965), Robert Cochrane
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Jack LaLanne hosted the first and longest running fitness program in United States broadcast history from 1951 through 1985. Since LaLanne's rise as a broadcasting celebrity, the health and fitness industry has grown from a small, somewhat-maligned field into a multi-billion dollar per year economy of its own. As LaLanne reached iconic status through his show, his name became synonymous with good health and nutrition, but the messages of his show went far beyond simple exercises. He used religious, patriotic, and biomedical messages to get his points across. In addition, he was a showman who sang to his audience, used …
Monsters In Our Midst: An Examination Of Human Monstrosity In Fiction And Film Of The United States, Michelle Kay Hansen
Monsters In Our Midst: An Examination Of Human Monstrosity In Fiction And Film Of The United States, Michelle Kay Hansen
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The chapters within this dissertation concentrate on textual analysis of literature and film in which monsters appear in various forms, and particularly how those monsters still coincide with Noel Carroll's definition of "art-horror" in his book Philosophy of Horror, while proving that Carroll's definition of monster - and any others who may attempt to limit the definition of monstrosity - is incomplete and much too restrictive. I will be concentrating on monstrosity as it appears in gothic and horror fiction, film, and other elements of popular culture in order to explore the concept of "the monstrous" on multiple levels.

Love Is Just A Word For The Last Body I'D Like To Keep Vigil Over, Robert Jagger
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Love is Just a Word for the Last Body I'd Like to Keep Vigil Over is a collection of poetry that was composed during my time spent at UNLV. Comprised mostly of prose poems, it was heavily influenced by the works of Richard Hugo, Robert Coover, Joshua Marie Wilkinson and several French poets who are often categorized as being members of either the Symbolist or Decadent movement. At its best, the collection attempts to invoke a sense of Joseph Cornell's boxes--odd juxtapositions of everyday items and language that create new and uncertain circumstances. Unlike Cornell's boxes, however, the poems aren't …

Community Resources And Black Social Action, F Street, A Case Study, Robert Joseph Mckee
Community Resources And Black Social Action, F Street, A Case Study, Robert Joseph Mckee
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This study examines the resources employed by the predominantly African American residents of Historic West Las Vegas, Nevada, to protest a street closure in their community. Previous studies of collective social action in the black community have stressed the involvement and resources of the black church. Instead, the residents of this community relied on cultural, social, and economic resources that did not depend heavily on the church. In this ethnographic case study, I combined participant observation, ethnographic interviews, prolonged engagement, photographs, and document analysis. I argue that the resources a community employs in social action can be analyzed using my …
