Religion, Science And Morality: Concentric Circles Or Mutually Exclusive?, Singapore Management University
Religion, Science And Morality: Concentric Circles Or Mutually Exclusive?, Singapore Management University
Perspectives@SMU
It was termed a debate on religion, science and morality, and two academics – one a self-declared atheist and the other, a Christian – squared off to give their takes on two questions that have plagued many minds: Can atheists be truly moral, and can a scientist be truly religious?
The End Of Nowhere: The History Of Tuberculosis In Ri, Emma G. Sconyers
The End Of Nowhere: The History Of Tuberculosis In Ri, Emma G. Sconyers
Senior Honors Projects
The World Health Organization estimates that approximately one third of the word's current population had been infected with tuberculosis. Prior to the 1940's TB was considered an incurable, chronic affliction. Historically, many people were forcibly detained in tuberculosis sanatoria to lessen the spread of the disease; my great granfather being one of them. In 1939, without warning, he was taken from his pregnant, jobless wife and one-year-old daughter, who were left to fend for themselves for two years without government planning or assistance. He spent those two years at Wallum Lake Sanitorium in northern Rhode Island, a place my great-grandmother's …

Baptism, Katie Kreutter
Verbum
In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.
"As a conveyor of God’s grace, baptism holds a significant role within Christianity and has been regarded as a sacrament by essentially every Christian tradition throughout history as a result. This reality is striking in light of Christian history, which has consistently demonstrated that contention and debate often surrounds central Church doctrine rather than unified agreement, the latter of which is far more challenging to obtain. Even though baptism is upheld as tantamount to the Christian faith and tradition, a variety of primary sources from the Reformation Era indicate …

"Saints" Reaching Out, Don Irving
Verbum
In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.
"Last semester in a” Saints in Film” course we did a project that related our class to the real world and helping others. In an effort to act on what we learned about saints, their love of God and their desire to express it through their lives, we contacted a parish in Brazil and came up with a class project to help their youth soccer program. The children there love the sport of soccer and we believed it would be a great gesture of love to give them proper …

Hearing The Game And Listening To The Player, Chris Sawyer

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.
"Football is one of America’s pastimes that have played a crucial role in my life along with many other people across the country. To the average person that might not know a lot about the sport it may bring negative vibes. Football may draw these vibes from the trash talking and violence included in the game. This game has so much more to offer though. On top of discipline, brotherhood, and a sense of pride for one’s team, football can give so much more. Looking at faith through football …

Mary Magdalene: Saint Not Sinner, Lisa Merry
Verbum
In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.
"I was attracted to the topic of Mary Magdalene because very little concrete information is known about her. SHe is mentioned a mere 12 times in the New Testament and is only acknowledged in the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. I was hoping that throughout my research I would be able to acquire more information about her, and understand why through the centuries she has been described as both a prostitute and a sinner. In truth, she was a beloved follower of Jesus and the first …

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.
“Learning is the key constituent of the human mind and family is the core of the social-relational structure” (Galia 243). This is the main point of Confucianism, a philosophic religion founded by Confucius. Confucianism was viewed in China as a moral code for how one should live their life."

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.
"I have always considered myself an artist even though my artistic endeavors had been limited to literature and music. However, in the past few years, since my time at Saint John Fisher College, I have been studying at the Katholiek Universiteit Leuven in Leuven, Belgium; and as part of my continuing seminary education, I was fortunate enough to have taken instruction in iconography. I initially thought that this exercise would be rather uninteresting and I didn’t take it seriously, but I have found a true home as an iconographer, …

"Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the greatest leaders of the civil rights movement during the 1960s. Dr. King’s rhetoric gave African Americans hope and pride in the color of their skin and that one day freedom and equality would envelop their lives. On April 3, 1968, Martin Luther King Jr., gave his final speech in the Mason Temple in Memphis, Tennessee. King was in Memphis to speak about unity, economic actions, boycotts, and nonviolent protest. At the end of this speech he spoke about an early …

"Images Of Polish Jewish Literature", Book Review Of Hava Bromberg Ben-Zvi, 'Portraits In Literature: The Jews Of Poland: An Anthology', Justine Pas
Faculty Scholarship
Excerpt:
"In her introduction to Portraits in Literature: The Jews of Poland, Hava Bromberg Ben-Zvi writes that “Jewish literature and culture did not perish from the face of the earth. Inherited and transformed by a new generation of writers, it was reborn, changed and enriched, finding new configurations, images and expressions” (p. xxxv). This sense of homage to a literature and culture of Polish Jews permeates the entire anthology, beginning with Bromberg Ben-Zvi’s essay on the historical context of Jewish life in Poland and ending with selections from writers like Anna Cwiakowska, who continues to write and publish in …
