Transformational Leadership In The Life And Works Of C.S. Lewis, Crystal L. Hurd

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The author of this study explored the works of C.S. Lewis as well as memoirs and scholarship concerning his work to illustrate his transformational leadership. Works reviewed included Lewis's fiction, such as his science fiction trilogy and his children's series, The Chronicles of Narnia, as well as his works of nonfiction, such as essays that addressed social issues. The secondary aim for the author of this study was to determine whether the transformational qualities Lewis exhibited also existed in his characters.

Transformational leadership served as the conceptual framework for the descriptive explanatory qualitative design. Essentially the study analyzed the primary …

The Edenton Tea Party, 25 October 1774: A Patriotic Female Community In Revolutionary North Carolina, Eliza Love Shelton May 2012

The Edenton Tea Party, 25 October 1774: A Patriotic Female Community In Revolutionary North Carolina, Eliza Love Shelton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My thesis examines the background and significance of the women who participated in the Edenton Tea Party, which took place in 1774. By examining this important event and the community that supported it, I illuminate the common political and domestic struggles of white women in the American Revolution as well as how they changed. The time period includes Edenton's part in the colony's participation in the war, the women's demonstration, their subsequent wartime experiences, and the legacy of their unprecedented rebellion, all of which place women on the path to attain the right to participate in American government. I analyze …

A Search For Balance, Scott Matthew Brown May 2012

A Search For Balance, Scott Matthew Brown

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

"Art is contemplation. It is the pleasure of the mind which searches into nature and which there defines the spirit of which nature herself is animated" (Auguste Rodin). My intention as a sculptor is to explore the intersection between nature and industry. I seek to find a balance between the industrial (steel) and the natural (stone). Steel represents societal obligations. Stone (river rock) is specific to place and representative of family. With these juxtaposed elements I strive to create sculptural forms of wonder and contemplation. I attempt to interpret and understand my involvement with the complex world through the process …

Party Of The Century: Juárez, Díaz, And The End Of The "Unifying Liberal Myth" In 1906 Oaxaca, John Radley Milstead May 2012

Party Of The Century: Juárez, Díaz, And The End Of The "Unifying Liberal Myth" In 1906 Oaxaca, John Radley Milstead

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

I will analyze the posthumous one-hundredth birthday celebration of former Mexican president and national hero, Benito Juárez, in 1906 Oaxaca City, Mexico. The Juárez celebration took place during the lengthy presidency of fellow Oaxaca native and former political rival Pofirio Díaz (1876-1911). Even though the two men experienced an antagonistic relationship, Díaz embraced the celebration and emphasized his connection to Juárez and, by extension, liberalism, the dominant political ideology. By all accounts, people enthusiastically took part in this official commemoration. But the festivities hid three years of contentious preparations whereby people questioned the political legacy of both men and even …

On The Absence Of Self: A Critical Analysis Of Tsongkhapa’S Philosophy Of Emptiness., Jesse Shelton May 2012

On The Absence Of Self: A Critical Analysis Of Tsongkhapa’S Philosophy Of Emptiness., Jesse Shelton

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This paper addresses the Madhyamaka philosophy of emptiness as interpreted by the fourteenth-century Tibetan Tsongkhapa. Tsongkhapa’s emptiness maintains that all phenomena are “empty” of intrinsic existence, an idea which starkly contrasts common Western worldviews that rely of belief in self-enclosed identities or souls. Here I analyze Tsongkhapa’s arguments for emptiness and relate them to the reader using examples easily understood by Western undergraduate students. I also provide several critiques of Tsongkhapa’s position and attempt to answer them according to his philosophy. This paper is aimed to be a simple, yet thorough introduction to Tsongkhapa’s philosophy of emptiness.

Religious Symbolism In Salvador Dali's Art: A Study Of The Influences On His Late Work., Jessica R. Hawley May 2012

Religious Symbolism In Salvador Dali's Art: A Study Of The Influences On His Late Work., Jessica R. Hawley

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Salvador Dalí was an artist who existed not long before my generation; yet, his influence among the contemporary art world causes many people to take a closer look at the significance of the imagery in his paintings. For the most part, Dalí is categorized as a Surrealist artist, yet in this essay, I also plan to explore other possibilities of influence that surrounded Salvador Dalí’s generation and inspirational background. Around 1941, Dalí’s work began to shift away from Surrealism and, instead, moved toward a more Classical style that contained many religious themes, a style which he called “Nuclear Mysticism” (Taylor …

"Ya'll Come Back" Continuing Arts And Crafts In Gatlinburg., Molly Noseworthy

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Gatlinburg, Tennessee is a tourist town. I was born and raised in this area, and am currently employed at a ceramics shop in the historic Arts and Crafts Community. Due to this job, I have decided to research the importance of the town and crafts area. In this paper, I will present an overview of the history of the town and its art community, and also present an inside look at life and business in a tourist town. Although the Arts and Crafts Community has grown to be a tourist attraction, its roots still lie in the traditional handmade trades, …

Everybody Lies., Justin Doak May 2012

Everybody Lies., Justin Doak

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Everybody lies. Everybody. The fact that everyone lies, however, is by no means a judgment; it is a good thing, a necessary thing. As far as I am concerned lying is the very foundation of our society. Nobody in the world tells the truth all the time, not because they are trying to be malevolently deceitful, of course, but out of necessity. Like the old adage says, the truth hurts. That is, in essence, the very heart of this body of work. Everyone tries so hard to not only convince others that the truth is a moral imperative, but also …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis looks at the social, political, and military effects of epidemic polio on America's war effort during World War II. The primary sources consulted include newspapers, military medical reports, photographs, memoirs, speeches, and archival collections. It looks at the effects of polio on the home front, more specifically how epidemics and the rising rates of polio were a detriment to the civilian war effort. It also focuses on the American military's preparation for and response to polio outbreaks among troops both at home and abroad. Finally, it discusses the experiences of the servicemen who contracted polio during the war. …

Librarians at National Louis University have been engaged with stakeholders for the past four years to integrate Information Literacy into the undergraduate curriculum that goes beyond traditional instruction. The outcome was a 2 credit course on Digital Information Literacy now required in three undergraduate degree programs. The success of this course resulted in the creation of additional credit courses tailored to the learning outcomes of specific programs. We have learned from this process how to strategically discuss Information Literacy with academic departments. In this session, we will draw from our experience to facilitate a group discussion on transforming Information Literacy …

"A Cosmic Rorschach Test": The Origins And Development Of The Search For Extraterrestrial Intelligence, 1959-1971, Sierra E. Smith May 2012

"A Cosmic Rorschach Test": The Origins And Development Of The Search For Extraterrestrial Intelligence, 1959-1971, Sierra E. Smith

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) emerged in the 1960s and quickly attracted much attention from both scientists and the public. The breadth of terms included in SETI discourse provides an excellent lens view the effects of context and the multiplicity of reactions on the part of scientists to ongoing contentious debates over science’s relationship to society and the federal government. This thesis presents three case studies of the development of SETI during the 1960s. The first case study analyses the origins of SETI as a scientific research project and speaks to the relationship between science and technology. The second …

Evocation Of Memory And Place, Colleen Pendry May 2012

Evocation Of Memory And Place, Colleen Pendry

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

My work investigates the inseparability of memory and emotion. Guided by what remain of my mother’s tattered memoirs, I have investigated a place from her past that suggests an intense search which filters through her writings and in tandem with my own visual remembrance. Through the manipulation of materials, technique and space, my work reveals a simple yet complex connectedness to memory and place.

Art From The Outpost, Field Notes, New Territory, And The Invisible Hamster, Dymphna De Wild May 2012

Art From The Outpost, Field Notes, New Territory, And The Invisible Hamster, Dymphna De Wild

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

The outpost installations I create reveal my choice to be inventive with mostly found materials that I discover on my walks. Calling myself an artist-archeologist, I write down field notes as I collect my art-bound specimens and make a descriptive inventory for each of the works. I often surprise my viewers (and myself) by creating something fabulously strange and compelling with things that were cast aside. I hope to increase my viewers’ abilities to find beauty in these forgotten and trashed items and to generate an innovative dialogue and an outside-of-the-box way of thinking.

Hidden Kisses, Walled Gardens, And Angel-Kinder: A Study Of The Victorian And Edwardian Conceptions Of Motherhood And Childhood In Little Women, The Secret Garden, And Peter Pan, Leah Marie Kirkpatrick

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

In this paper, I explore the evolving conceptions of childhood and motherhood as expressed in Victorian and Edwardian children’s literature generally, and specifically in Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women, Frances Hodgeson Burnett’s The Secret Garden, and J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan. An overview of the history of children’s literature and its development with relation to the changing cultural concept of childhood, as well as a discussion of social, economic, and creative factors impacting the ideological position of women at the turn of the 20th century provide the necessary background for said exploration. A variety of primary and secondary sources relating to …

Are All Things Equal In The Back Row?: Issues Of Bias And The Female Percussionist, Pamela Rae Riggles May 2012

Are All Things Equal In The Back Row?: Issues Of Bias And The Female Percussionist, Pamela Rae Riggles

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

In observing bands or orchestras at all levels of performance proficiency, very often it becomes apparent to the onlooker that certain sections of instruments tend to be made up of a greater number of either male or female performers. For instance, the percussion and trumpet sections of ensembles often tend to be predominately male (Steinberg, 2001). This begs the question as to what implications there may be for those who have chosen an instrument that is not considered a “typical” instrument for their gender to play? What challenges might these musicians face, and what biases, if any, might they have …

Self / Center, Jason J. Anderson

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

The act of photographing myself has had a profound effect on my personal healing after surviving a suicide attempt in the winter of 2008. Coming to the end of my rope after years of trying ex-gay therapy and countless bullying in the workplace and from others left me with a fragmented self that was collapsing. It was through the reawakening and rebuilding of myself that I began to photograph myself as a means of therapy and closure. My work has consistently dealt with the elements of faith and sexuality and the problems that one goes through in attempting to reconcile …

Signs Of The Times, Felicia Hersh May 2012

Signs Of The Times, Felicia Hersh

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

This research project endeavors to apply current museum education theory and practice to existing museum education programming, specifically at the Neon Museum in Las Vegas, Nevada. As today’s museums are considered leisure-time activities and compete with a host of other leisure and tourist attractions for visitors’ discretionary time and income, the development of enjoyable, effective, and memorable museum experiences is crucial to the survival of these traditional institutions. Based on these ideas, this project seeks to incorporate new theories of learning and methods for educating the public into the Neon Museum’s development of successful educational programming, including active engagement with …
