Between Capitalism And Socialism: Religion And Distributive Justice, Nicole Guarnieri '12 May 2012

Between Capitalism And Socialism: Religion And Distributive Justice, Nicole Guarnieri '12

College Honors Program

Takes up the issue of “devout Catholics” who seem to have forgotten the significance of traditional Catholic ethics, or obligations to society as a whole. Capitalism is the most appropriate economic system, however this thesis will re-address ethics and morality in relation to our current situation, because capitalism today is lacking something that the capitalism of Adam Smith was not.

Ed Lai Interview About Grace Lai, Thomas Matt May 2012

Ed Lai Interview About Grace Lai, Thomas Matt

Asian American Art Oral History Project

Artist Bio: Grace Lai painted downtown Chicago in concrete and steel bloom, for two decades producing vibrant montages of skyline-shaping buildings as they climbed. An "on-site" artist who didn't seriously take up painting until nearly 60 because of a promise made to her deceased husband, Mrs. Lai donned a hard hat and was unafraid to board construction elevators for rides high into the sky to complete her work. In winter she'd wrap herself in plastic garbage bags and substitute rubbing alcohol for water in her paints, so they wouldn't freeze.

Korsgaard And Non-Sentient Life, Gregory L. Bock May 2012

Korsgaard And Non-Sentient Life, Gregory L. Bock

Between the Species

Christine Korsgaard argues for the moral status of animals and our obligations to them. She grounds this obligation on the notion that we share a common identity, our animal nature, with them and that animal pain represents a public reason that binds us; nevertheless, her distinctive attempt to enlist Kantian arguments to account for our obligations to animals has a startling implication that she fails to adequately consider: that we have direct duties to plants as well.

Anonymous Narrator, Ellen Hoffman May 2012

Anonymous Narrator, Ellen Hoffman

Oral Histories

As an Ohio native that became actively involved in her Native heritage later in life, my narrator presents an interesting perspective. She is an urban Indian, never having lived on a reservation. She was raised Catholic and attended Catholic schools. Her story is a testament to the fact that even Native Americans that do not grow up with a strong tie to their Native heritage can go on to become very involved and influenced by Native activity.

Daily Experiences Of Older Adults With Mild Cognitive Impairment, Elizabeth Hahn May 2012

Daily Experiences Of Older Adults With Mild Cognitive Impairment, Elizabeth Hahn

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Rationale and study aims: Persons with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) experience declines in everyday functioning and cognitive performance greater than what is experienced in normal aging but less than that of dementia. Daily stress and daily memory complaints associated with cognitive deficits may contribute to greater psychological distress in the day-to-day experiences of persons with MCI. However, research examining the occurrence of daily stressors, daily memory complaints and psychological distress in MCI is limited, and it is not clear how the daily processes of stress and affect in persons with MCI compare to cognitively healthy older adults. This dissertation examined …

A Framework For Participatory Sensing Systems, Diego Mendez Chaves May 2012

A Framework For Participatory Sensing Systems, Diego Mendez Chaves

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Participatory sensing (PS) systems are a new emerging sensing paradigm based on the participation of cellular users in a cooperative way. Due to the spatio-temporal granularity that a PS system can provide, it is now possible to detect and analyze events that occur at different scales, at a low cost. While PS systems present interesting characteristics, they also create new problems. Since the measuring devices are cheaper and they are in the hands of the users, PS systems face several design challenges related to the poor accuracy and high failure rate of the sensors, the possibility of malicious users tampering …

Exploring The Connections Between Science And Spirituality: Conversations About The Afterlife, Ellen Jackson May 2012

Exploring The Connections Between Science And Spirituality: Conversations About The Afterlife, Ellen Jackson

Staff Scholarship

This research explores the possibilities, through literature and the experience of others, that the physical body is the container for “something” often referred to as the soul or ethereal substance which lives beyond the body after death. My work examines the intersection of science and spirituality related to conversations and writings about the afterlife. This investigation was conducted relying on the findings and the beliefs/opinions of ancient and modern philosophers, scientists and spiritual leaders’ concepts of death and the possibility that other worlds (or dimensions) exist. Despite many centuries of exploration, there is no conclusive scientific evidence of an afterlife; …

The Road To Gaining Acceptance And Status For Women In American Medicine, Terrie S. Ahn May 2012

The Road To Gaining Acceptance And Status For Women In American Medicine, Terrie S. Ahn

Honors College Theses

For my honors thesis, I discuss the history of women in American medicine during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In particular, I focus on how the social and cultural time periods affected women’s efforts in pursuing further medical education, how these women were perceived and treated by not only their male colleagues, but also the outside world, how it affected their future career choices in medicine, and finally, how their efforts ended up changing the medical career path for future female generations.

It begins with a discussion of the variety of obstacles, both private and public, that hindered …

Two Essays On The Sell-Side Financial Analysts, Xi Liu May 2012

Two Essays On The Sell-Side Financial Analysts, Xi Liu

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In the first essay titled "The Information Role of Analysts' Contrarian Revisions," I study a special group of revisions: contrarian revisions, defined as recommendation changes that are inconsistent with sizable stock price movements during the past week. I find that contrarian revisions are relatively more informative than trending revisions. In particular, contrarian revisions are associated with a both statistically and economically larger post-announcement drift. I also find contrarian downgrades are less likely to be issued by all-star analysts and analysts with more experience. After implementation of Regulation RD, the market reaction to contrarian revisions issued by all-stars significantly decreases, indicating …

Women And War: Power Play From Lysistrata To The Present, Shuyang Cynthia Luo May 2012

Women And War: Power Play From Lysistrata To The Present, Shuyang Cynthia Luo

Honors Scholar Theses

"Women and War: Power Play from Lysistrata to the Present" is a three-fold project intent on analyzing the role of women in war and comedy. The intentions are: demonstrating how Aristophanes’ famed comedy, Lysistrata, was a subversive text for its time, as it presented a challenge to men’s authority that otherwise remained unchallenged, creating a modernized retelling of Lysistrata, which she holds would still be a subversive text, because men still have nearly absolute authority in war, and finally, analyzing the comedic nature of Lysistrata in a modern text; namely, why women’s choices constitute a comedy, and the comedic potential …

The Black Experience In Postwar Germany, Jamie Christopher Morris May 2012

The Black Experience In Postwar Germany, Jamie Christopher Morris

Honors Scholar Theses

This paper endeavors to find the extent of anti-black racism in various sectors of German society following World War Two through an examination of primary sources and secondary scholarship. While some Germans, often women, tolerated and even loved African-American soldiers, many German men actively sought to keep black GIs out of their communities, encouraged by white GIs. Afro-German children were viewed as a huge and shameful problem to be dealt with en masse by the government. The development of German anti-black racism is interesting to track how the German people shifted from Nazi attitudes towards Americanized ones.

Beliefs And Coping With Life Stress Among Uconn Students, John Paul Beninato May 2012

Beliefs And Coping With Life Stress Among Uconn Students, John Paul Beninato

Honors Scholar Theses

Previous studies of religion and coping have looked at how an event can strengthen or weaken beliefs. However, few studies have explicitly examined the linkages between beliefs, coping strategies, and well-being. In an attempt to look at this more closely, the present study surveyed 193 undergraduates that believe or do not believe in God to see how they report coping with stress. The relationships between beliefs in God, worldview beliefs, different levels of life satisfaction, psychological well-being, and coping methods after a stressful event were also assessed in this study. We expected that stronger beliefs in a benevolent world, control, …

Using Music To Study: Variables That Affect A Student's Incorporation Of Music In Their Academic World, Kelly Perez May 2012

Using Music To Study: Variables That Affect A Student's Incorporation Of Music In Their Academic World, Kelly Perez

Honors Scholar Theses

This study reports relationships made between a student’s personality and his or her preferences to use music while studying. Other behaviors regarding music in a non-academic setting are also discussed. Data from 67 participants suggest that highly organized individuals show a tendency to use music for studying and to make use of playlists they created. They use music to enhance their mood. Many of the dimensions that describe agreeable people are related to using music for academic purposes, but also highly correlated to studying with other people. The results suggest that the way we use music in our lives is …

"The Wicked Flee When None Pursueth": A Formalist Critique Of Three Crime Films By Joel And Ethan Coen, Timothy Semenza

Honors Scholar Theses

By analyzing the artistic and technical components of film (e.g. cinematography, writing, acting, etc.), similarities and differences between three crime films by the American directors, Joel and Ethan Coen, are assessed. The films that are analyzed are Fargo, No Country for Old Men, and True Grit. The purpose of this endeavor is to investigate in great detail three critically acclaimed works by some of the most influential filmmakers in America today, and to advocate for a more widespread scholarly appreciation of these directors.

Commedia By Zabbo, Laura Zabbo May 2012

Commedia By Zabbo, Laura Zabbo

Honors Scholar Theses

After studying Commedia Dell'arte with world renowned maestro, Antonio Fava, in Reggio Emilia, Italy, I returned to the States and continued to develop my craft by teaching others and creating a self-produced Commedia Dell'arte show. Using Fava's training from the month-long course in Italy, I used the foundation of the traditional Commedia Dell'arte characters, their physicality, and the stock story-lines to build my own one-woman comical performance that was completely relevant to the setting. The show was completely self-written and directed, and was performed using sculpted Commedia Dell'arte masks from Bart Roccoberton and his puppetry students.
