Dissolved Inorganic Carbon Uptake In Thiomicrospira Crunogena Xcl–2 Is Atp–Sensitive And Enhances Rubisco–Mediated Carbon Fixation, Kristy Jae Menning May 2012

Dissolved Inorganic Carbon Uptake In Thiomicrospira Crunogena Xcl–2 Is Atp–Sensitive And Enhances Rubisco–Mediated Carbon Fixation, Kristy Jae Menning

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Many autotrophic organisms living in environments with episodically low dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentrations compensate for these fluctuations by employing a carbon concentrating mechanism (CCM). By utilizing a CCM, these organisms can generate intracellular DIC concentrations much higher than extracellular, thereby providing sufficient substrate for carbon fixation. Carbon concentrating mechanisms have been well-studied in cyanobacteria but studies are lacking in other autotrophs. The gammaproteobacterium Thiomicrospira crunogena XCL-2 is a hydrothermal vent chemolithoautotroph that has a CCM, which is functionally similar to that of cyanobacteria. At hydrothermal vents, DIC concentrations and pH values fluctuate over time, with CO2 concentrations ranging from …

Biomechanical Testing On Cadaveric Spines For Different Treatments That Affect Lumbar Stability, Sabrina Alejandra Gonzalez Blohm May 2012

Biomechanical Testing On Cadaveric Spines For Different Treatments That Affect Lumbar Stability, Sabrina Alejandra Gonzalez Blohm

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Stenosis is one of the most common causes for spinal surgery. Laminectomy decompression and fusion are surgical procedures prescribed for this condition. The intention of this work was to investigate the effects of a laminectomy decompression, followed by fusion, on a lumbar functional spinal unit (FSU) through in vitro dynamic (±8Nm at 0.125Hz) and quasi-static (±7.5Nm at 0.1Hz) biomechanical tests, for flexion, extension, bending and rotation motions.

Six FSUs where disarticulated from four human cadaveric lumbar spines (63 ± 12 years) and were tested under the following sequence: (1) intact, (2) laminectomy decompression, and (3) Pedicle Screw System (PSS), using …

Seeing (The Other) Through A Terministic Screen Of Spirituality: Emotional Integrity As A Strategy For Facilitating Identification, Jarron Benjamin Slater May 2012

Seeing (The Other) Through A Terministic Screen Of Spirituality: Emotional Integrity As A Strategy For Facilitating Identification, Jarron Benjamin Slater

Theses and Dissertations

Although philosopher Robert Solomon and rhetorician Kenneth Burke wrote in isolation from one another, they discuss similar concepts and ideas. Since its introduction in Burke's A Rhetoric of Motives, identification has always been important to rhetorical theory, and recent studies in emotion, such as Solomon's, provide new insight into modes of identification—that human beings can identify with one another on an emotional level. This paper places Solomon and Burke in conversation with one another, arguing that both terministic screens and emotions are ways of seeing, acting, engaging, and judging. Hence, terministic screens and emotions affect ethos, or character, both …

Atonement In Romans 3:19-31, Norm Mathers May 2012

Atonement In Romans 3:19-31, Norm Mathers

SOR Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Pauline model of Romans 3:19-31 is a description of substitutionary atonement. Sin, guilt, righteousness, faith in Christ, justification, redemption, propitiation, Christ a covering, atonement in his blood, substitute, justice, justifier, and the principle of faith are descriptive of this view of the atonement. A barrage of literature has arisen against penal substitution. Penal substitution has been confused with substitutionary atonement. Penal substitution has also been referred to as penal substitutionary atonement which isn’t substitutionary atonement. Substitutionary atonement has been clouded by such atonement theories as Christus Victor. Aulen’s view of reconciliation doesn’t adequately describe the New Testament atonement. Substitutionary …

Projecting Pornography And Mapping Modernity In Mexico City, Ageeth Sluis May 2012

Projecting Pornography And Mapping Modernity In Mexico City, Ageeth Sluis

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Drawing on Elizabeth Grosz’s and Doreen Massey’s insights that place and gender are mutually constitutive, this article examines the articulation among the embodied city, sexual desire, and changing gender norms in the wake of the Mexican Revolution. At this time, a newly governing revolutionary elite sought to reinvigorate and “civilize” Mexico City through a series of urban reforms and public works, partly in response to their concern over women in public as a social problem. By analyzing depictions of female nudity as conversant with urban landscapes in the banned magazine Vea, the author argues that pornography connected Mexico City …

Traumatized Voices: The Transformation Of Personal Trauma Into Public Writing During The Romantic Era, Karalyne S. Lowery May 2012

Traumatized Voices: The Transformation Of Personal Trauma Into Public Writing During The Romantic Era, Karalyne S. Lowery

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Beginning as early as the 1790s and continuing throughout the nineteenth century, it is possible to trace in British literature a distinctive line of fascination among authors with what we now understand to be trauma and its profound effects on the lives and behaviors of it victims/survivors. With today’s neurological proof of the changes that take place in the brains of traumatized individuals, it stands to reason that these changes have taken place in every century, not just the century in which we have had the technology to view it or the vocabulary to describe it. This means that psychological …

Grand Arabesque, Second Time, Risd Museum, Julie Strandberg, Jeff Hesser May 2012

Grand Arabesque, Second Time, Risd Museum, Julie Strandberg, Jeff Hesser

Channel

Transitional poses such as this one were constant themes of Edgar Degas’s numerous sculptural studies made in wax, wire, and plastilene. Collected from his studio following his death, these models became the sources of small editions cast in bronze, including this one of a dancer posed in a grand arabesque. In the classic ballet position, the dancer bends forward while standing on one straight leg, with the opposite arm extended forward and the other arm and leg extended backward. In the 1890s the British artist Walter Sickert visited Degas in his studio and was shown the wax model for this …
