On The Poetry Of The ChineseAnd Early Overseas Dissemination Of The Chinese Classical Poetry, Yan Wang, Yan Fang May 2012

On The Poetry Of The ChineseAnd Early Overseas Dissemination Of The Chinese Classical Poetry, Yan Wang, Yan Fang

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The book On the Poetry of the Chinese was the first monograph attempting to introduce and translate Chinese classical poetry comprehensively and systematically in the history of British Sinology. With its popularity and significant influence in Europe, the book was regarded as the foundation stone on the research of the Chinese poetics in the West. It attaches great importance to the Chinese folk poems, and displays undue favor toward Western-style poems written by Chinese, it also involves some initiative and highly constructive views on Chinese epics, pastoral poetry and poetic dramas. Especially, the view that the Chinese has no epics …

The Linguistic Refashioning Of An Internal Exile: Duoduo And His Pre-Exile Poetics, Chee Lay Tan May 2012

The Linguistic Refashioning Of An Internal Exile: Duoduo And His Pre-Exile Poetics, Chee Lay Tan

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

This paper investigates Chinese Misty poet Duoduo's early pre-exile poems. As Duoduo uses punctuation abundantly in an orderly structure and dates his poems, his works projects themselves as being more transparent than obscure or misty. Even Duoduo himself denied writing Misty poetry, although most critics classified his works as "Misty" and described them as "weird" and "difficult". This paper will examine such confusion by focusing on Duoduo's pre-exile linguistic refashioning via musicality and juxtaposition of unrelated images, which I regard as his main constituent of Mistiness.

Yan'an Lu Xun College Of Art Before And After "The Rectification Movement", Siyun Zhao

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

"Yan'an Rectification Movement" has become an important watershed in Yan'an period and the 20th Century Chinese history. The education policy, aesthetic idea and mores of Lu Xun College of Art changed drastically after rectification movement, and it became the miniature of literature education under wartime conditions. As Yan'an in 1930s is a typical society of wartime communism modal, Lu Xun College of Art focuses on political disciplines more than cultural inheritance. The purpose of education is not to cultivate academic talent with an independent spirit of scientific and truth pursuit, but to develop the better tools of war. The way …

Levels Of Altruism, Martin Zwick, Jeffrey Alan Fletcher May 2012

Levels Of Altruism, Martin Zwick, Jeffrey Alan Fletcher

Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series

The phenomenon of altruism extends from the biological realm to the human sociocultural realm. This paper sketches a coherent outline of multiple types of altruism of progressively increasing scope that span these two realms and are grounded in an ever-expanding sense of “self.” Discussion of this framework notes difficulties associated with altruisms at different levels. It links scientific ideas about the evolution of cooperation and about hierarchical order to perennial philosophical and religious concerns. It offers a conceptual background for inquiry into societal challenges that call for altruistic behavior, especially the challenge of environmental and social sustainability.

Going To Town: Family Recreation In Picher Oklahoma, Cassie Drake

Theory and Practice: HIST430

In the days of mining money was scarce. Along with lack of disposable income also came a lack of free time. Miners worked long and tiresome days with little rest and little family time. The wives of miners also spent long days keeping house and raising children and much like their husbands, had a tiresome job. However, when the income became available they would do something fun with their families, or even take a trip to a nearby town. Picher had a wide variety of things to do and see, almost something for all ages. Spending time off at home …

An Exploratory Study To Determine If Marching Band Rehearsal Activities Could Satisfy National Physical Education Standard Three As Measured By The Heart Rates Of Collegiate Marching Band Members, Serena Weren

Student Theses and Dissertations

An increasing number of states allow high school curricular credits earned in marching band to substitute for required physical education credits. Legitimizing this substitution would required that marching band meet contemporary recommendations for frequency, duration, and intensity of physical activity as stated in the Third National Standard for Physical Education. The purpose of this exploratory descriptive study was to determine the intensity of physical activity occurring in a marching band rehearsal by measuring the heart rates of collegiate marching band members using pulse counts and heart rate monitors. Some marching band activities were found to raise the average heart rate …

Citizen Action, Power Relations And Wetland Management In The Tampa Bay Urban Socio-Ecosystem, Cornelius Owusu Adjei

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Wetlands are vital ecosystems that provide ecological, economic and social benefits to societies. In the Tampa Bay region in West Central Florida, a growing population has put immense pressure on wetlands. The situation has not gone unnoticed in the public domain with concerns raised about the need to formulate policies that would protect them. However, it has been difficult to ascertain the level of citizen involvement in the decision making process.

This study aimed at investigating whether the perceptions and concerns of citizens drove them to influence local water policy. Questionnaires were used to collect data from residents living in …

Predictors Of Latino Mothers' Involvement In Their Children's Education, Liza Maria Arango May 2012

Predictors Of Latino Mothers' Involvement In Their Children's Education, Liza Maria Arango

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Parental involvement has a major influence on students' academic and overall success; however, Latino parents tend to be less involved than non-Latino parents. Additionally, Latino students have higher dropout rates than other ethnic groups, and their continued underachievement is of great concern to many educators. The purpose of this study is to better understand Latino mothers' involvement and identify the precursor factors that may influence these mothers' involvement in their children's education. Specifically, the study investigated specific family factors that may potentially impact Latino mothers' involvement at school and at home (i.e., mothers' number of years residing in the U.S., …

A Cross-National Analysis Of The Human Papillomavirus, Sexually Transmitted Infections, And Sexual Behavior Among Men, Euna Marie August May 2012

A Cross-National Analysis Of The Human Papillomavirus, Sexually Transmitted Infections, And Sexual Behavior Among Men, Euna Marie August

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

There is a paucity of research on the risk for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and sexual behavior among general populations of men. Research with male populations predominantly has focused on those subgroups considered to be at high risk of disease transmission, such as gay and bisexual men, injection drug users, and adolescents/young adults. Considerably fewer studies have examined factors among men, in general, and heterosexual men, specifically. Therefore, I conducted analyses with a cross-national sample of adult, sexually active men in Brazil, Mexico, and the United States to investigate sexual behaviors and risk factors associated with the human papillomavirus (HPV) …

La Littérature Des Enfants De Harkis : Mémoire Et Réconciliation, Vincent Jouane May 2012

La Littérature Des Enfants De Harkis : Mémoire Et Réconciliation, Vincent Jouane

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This dissertation focuses on a corpus of autobiographies and novels produced since 2002 by children, mainly daughters, of harkis: Algerian civilians who fought on the French side during the war of independence of Algeria between 1954 and 1962), including Dalila Kerchouche, Fatima Besnaci-Lancou and Zahia Rahmani. In this study, I have argued that this emerging literature differs from other "minor literatures," as defined by theorists Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, by the fact that these young authors withold the traditional discourse of victimization to emphasize dialogue and reconciliation. In the first chapter, I examine how the notion of historicity can …
