Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public
Reading the official Facebook page of one of my favorite history authors yesterday, I saw a pithy note about a "day of note." Ninety years ago this week, President Warren Harding dedicated the Lincoln Memorial at the west end of the National Mall in Washington, D.C. [excerpt]
Discovering My Passion As An Ally: Gaining Awareness Of The History Of The Gay Rights Movement, Meghan R. Callaghan
Discovering My Passion As An Ally: Gaining Awareness Of The History Of The Gay Rights Movement, Meghan R. Callaghan
Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection
Forty years have passed since the civil rights movements in the 1960s and 70s, and even with significant social and political strides made for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) communities, some parts of life look and feel the same. The negative effects of homophobia still reign large and can be seen in state and national policies and through the harassment and violence towards LGBT youth. As a heterosexual, I want to know the best ways I can support and advocate for LGBT rights, and I wonder if through my privileges as a straight woman, compared to being a …
Born-Again Artist: Lessons, Prophets, And Visions On Developing An Identity As An Artist, Alison Palmucci
Born-Again Artist: Lessons, Prophets, And Visions On Developing An Identity As An Artist, Alison Palmucci
Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection
Being an artist involves the creation and maintenance of an artistic identity. Because there are no specific prerequisites for becoming an artist, like academic degrees or professional licenses, anyone can call him- or herself an artist. Working as an artist differs from working in more typical careers. This paper seeks to examine the ways artists build and maintain artistic identities, and the various actions or modes of thinking needed in order to do so. The author reflects on her own life as an artist, which includes considering how she lost sight of her artistic self, and the steps she is …
The Abaya: Fashion, Religion, And Identity In A Globalized World, Elizabeth D. Shimek
The Abaya: Fashion, Religion, And Identity In A Globalized World, Elizabeth D. Shimek
Lawrence University Honors Projects
The abaya is a traditional robe worn by women in the Arab Gulf states as both a symbol of national identity and as a part of Islamic veiling customs. Over the last twenty years, partly due to exposure to Western couture fashion, the abaya has changed from a plain, voluminous black robe to a unique signifier of personal taste through variations in fabrics, cuts, colors, and detailing. This study explores both the physical and symbolic changes the abaya (and the industry surrounding it) has undergone, as well as how these changes both reflect and provoke the conflicts in identity residents …
Bradenton, Fl: A Patchwork City, Rebekah G. Brightbill
Bradenton, Fl: A Patchwork City, Rebekah G. Brightbill
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The City of Bradenton is a patchwork city, whose neighborhoods vary greatly in quality. While its neighborhoods differ in type based on consumer preference, they vary in quality because of federal, state, and local planning and urban policy. These policies have resulted in inequality of place and race, clustering racial minorities in center city neighborhoods with deteriorated infrastructure and income inequality. This impacts the ability of the City to be competitive with other cities as a metropolitan whole. The City's economically and racially segregated neighborhoods are not the inevitable outcome of market forces, but rather reflect decades of federal, state, …
Jewish Ethnic Identity And The Dissolution Of The Black-Jewish Alliance, Nathan G. Caplin
Jewish Ethnic Identity And The Dissolution Of The Black-Jewish Alliance, Nathan G. Caplin
Theses and Dissertations
Since the early 20th century, Jews promoted civil rights for Black Americans in law, society, and employment. The Jewish hand of friendship developed into a natural alliance of African-American and Jewish leaders committed to racial equality that blossomed in the 1950s and 1960s and culminated with the passage of the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act. Despite their long term mutual efforts towards racial equality, the Black-Jewish Alliance faltered after Jews and Blacks cooperated to achieve these victories, and their alliance lay in ruins by the late 1960s and early 1970s. The Black-Jewish Alliance began to wane as …

Behind Bars: Prison Abolition And Collective Work Toward Social Justice, Emily M. Pulsfus
Behind Bars: Prison Abolition And Collective Work Toward Social Justice, Emily M. Pulsfus
Capstone Collection
Work toward the collective movements for liberation has proven to be a difficult task for those who have chosen to dedicate their lives and work to make social change. A close examination of the non-profit industrial complex and the connections with the prison-industrial complex will enable social change agents to better articulate the ways in which we can move forward toward a more just world. The question central to my research asks: Is prison abolition necessary for social justice? To answer this question I will use an analysis of the non-profit industrial complex to explore how a social justice institution, …
The Meeting School: An Alternative Mode Of Education, Hallel Parsons
The Meeting School: An Alternative Mode Of Education, Hallel Parsons
Capstone Collection
What role do spirituality, community, and farming play in contemporary US education? As a farm and faculty intern at a small, private, Quaker boarding high school in rural NH I gained an interesting perspective on this subject. Using Robert G. Hanvey’s working thesis: An Attainable Global Perspective: Education for a Global Perspective as a standard by which to measure my experience at The Meeting School, I explore the implications of an education founded upon the Quaker values of simplicity, peace, integrity, community, and equality (SPICE), within the context of an intentional community committed to organic farming as a means to …

Feminine Leadership: Spenser's Britomart And Lewis's Reason, Jonathan Himes
Feminine Leadership: Spenser's Britomart And Lewis's Reason, Jonathan Himes
Inklings Forever: Published Colloquium Proceedings 1997-2016
Scholars have debated the apparent sexism in many of Lewis's statements and in his views on female clergy. Without addressing these particular issues of importance in Lewisian studies, this paper will analyze Lewis's choice of a female virgin in the role of Reason who topples the giant Spirit of the Age in his early allegory, The Pilgrim's Regress. Besides the obvious influence of Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress on this work and the feminine figures of the divine in George MacDonald's fiction as another influence, Edmund Spenser's female knight Britomart may have provided Lewis with the idea of a strong feminine …

Essays On Mental Accounting And Consumers' Decision Making, Ali Besharat
Essays On Mental Accounting And Consumers' Decision Making, Ali Besharat
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is structured in the form of two empirical essays, each investigating one type of irrational decision caused by mental accounting. The first essay, titled "Managing the Cost of Multiple Debt Accounts: A Behavioral Perspective", explores why many people pay off credit cards' with the lowest rate first when rationally speaking they should repay the debt with the highest rate most quickly. This essay suggests that irrationality emerges when people seek to close `mental accounts' associated with their credit cards and reduce the total number of outstanding loans rather than decrease the amount of total debt among all credit …
The Sound And The Fury: Comparative Sociolinguistic Studies In German, Logan C. Pecinovsky
The Sound And The Fury: Comparative Sociolinguistic Studies In German, Logan C. Pecinovsky
Honors Theses
The German nation has a long history of fragmentation, from the mini-states of the Middle Ages to the eastern and western republics of the recent past. These barriers affected the speech community in particular. Among the various borders that shifted through Central and Eastern Europe for centuries, dialects arose as a result of strong political and cultural identities. Without a strong centralizing force to integrate them, the many communities remained relatively homogenous, which provided fertile soil for unique linguistic development. The most recent partition of East and West scarcely lasted half a century and did not create a discrete speech …

On The Efficiency Of Us Equity Markets, Mikael Carl Erik Bergbrant
On The Efficiency Of Us Equity Markets, Mikael Carl Erik Bergbrant
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Most papers in empirical finance implicitly or explicitly assume the same price of risk, for each priced systematic risk factor, across all risky assets within a given domestic market. In doing so, they rely on the assumption that markets are domestically integrated and, as such, that the price of risk is determined independently of individual investors attitude towards risk. This is true in frictionless markets where investors have complete information, homogenous beliefs, and hold the mean-variance efficient combination of the market portfolio and a risk-free asset. However, investors might not hold the market portfolio because of exogenous reasons. In fact, …
