Redefining, Crafting, And Re/Presenting Contemporary Ethnicities: Honduran National Identity, 1994–2006, Cordelia A. Frewen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Since the last quarter of the twentieth century, Fourth World populations, including those in Honduras, have been steadily gaining partial recognition of cultural rights; yet often official discourses of national identity continue to subsume cultural traditions of indigenous and Afro-descendant communities. Honduras's heterogeneous ethnic pluralism has historically been combined to promote a more cohesive national identity of a homogenized, mayanized, indo-Hispanic mestizaje. Exclusion and mis- or under-representation of indigenous groups is reinforced by popular imagination, particularly in the cultural heritage and tourism sectors. Firmly situated within regional Latin American and global trends, over the past two decades, official discourse on …

Towards A Swiss American Colony
Towards A Swiss American Colony
Swiss American Historical Society Review
The biography of Johann Rudolf Ochs (1673-1749) is a work in progress. Despite numerous entries in Swiss dictionaries of artists and artisans, not even a basic curriculum vitae exists. Perhaps worse,
upon enquiry in Bern archives and libraries, surprisingly the learned librarians could not name or locate a single work of art by the famed Piitschiergriiber (seal engraver) or "Gemmenschneider" ( cutter of gems, or cameos) Ochs. The legendary art of the young Swiss is as elusive as the young artist himself. This is surprising as he is usually praised as an extraordinary artist, even as the best engraver of …

Family Affairs Newsletter 2012-06-01, Zack Paakkonen
Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)
FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Disease And Humanity: Ba Jin And His "Ward Four: A Wartime Novel Of China", Haili Kong
Disease And Humanity: Ba Jin And His "Ward Four: A Wartime Novel Of China", Haili Kong
Chinese Faculty Works
"Family" as Ba Jin’s intense concern seems to be a central icon of his literary works, carrying through from his Family (1933) to Cold Nights (1947). After briefly reassessing Ba Jin’s literary contribution in his early phase, this essay will focus more on Ba Jin’s novels written in the 1940s, particularly his Ward Four, which rarely attracts critical attention. For Lu Xun, mental disease in China was more crucial than physical disease. Ba Jin uses both mental and physical diseases to explore humanity in a wartime hospital. Ba Jin’s early novels were infused with more radical ideas, but as a …

Communication Studies
Flavor of SLO is a fundraising event put on by Cal Poly students to raises thousands of dollars to benefit the local non-profit United Way. This paper recounts how various aspects of the communication discipline played a part in making the event successful and how it contributed to achieving the goals of improving education, income and health for San Luis Obispo County.
The Intersection Between Science And Computer Science Is Almost Empty, Dick Hamlet
The Intersection Between Science And Computer Science Is Almost Empty, Dick Hamlet
Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series
Traditionally, a science such as physics overlaps with mathematics and engineering in a way that has been astonishingly productive. The math provides precise expression for the science, which in turn supplies the engineering with the information it needs to exploit physical phenomena. Computer science naturally wishes to put itself in the center of the traditional picture as a science. Unfortunately, it won't wash. The `science' of programming is pure and simple mathematics, not science. The distinction is more than linguistic, since science and mathematics have quite distinct goals and methods. By making the wrong choice, computer science research has been …

Reflections On Associative Word Links In Judges, Joel Kaminsky
Reflections On Associative Word Links In Judges, Joel Kaminsky
Religion: Faculty Publications
Attempts to read Judges in a unified fashion have shed much light on this book. Yet, such readings often are not fully convincing because they gloss over details that do not easily fit into the literary, theological, or ideological perspective being advanced. This essay moves in a new direction by exploring a thick web of verbal resonances that brings various distinct components within Judges into a complex literary and theological conversation. Even as this webbing draws various parts of the book into association with each other, it at the same time highlights the distinct elements of each story. While many …

Femmes Arabes Au Harem : La Magie Et Le Pouvoir De L’Oralité Dans L’Écriture De Fatima Mernissi, Samira Farhoud
Femmes Arabes Au Harem : La Magie Et Le Pouvoir De L’Oralité Dans L’Écriture De Fatima Mernissi, Samira Farhoud
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
This article examines the polysemy of the word harem in several of Fatima Mernissi’s texts. Moreover, it considers the role of orality in the form of “oral archives” that were nurtured, maintained and passed on from mother to daughter. The related issue of Mernissi’s feminist activism is also analyzed. Women in Mernissi’s harem constructed complex narratives and “stories” that incorporated many fragments of “professional” or “national” histories, including the “official” history of Morocco’s attainment of independence in 1956. Accounts of femininist movements in the Middle East and Morocco, including the al-Safaa Akhwat or Sisters of Purity (1946) and the group’s …

Enhancing Listening And Spoken Skills In Spanish Connected Speech For Anglophones, Elena Paz Vizcaya
Enhancing Listening And Spoken Skills In Spanish Connected Speech For Anglophones, Elena Paz Vizcaya
Doctoral
Native speech is directed towards native listeners, not designed for comprehension and analysis by language learners. Speed of delivery, or economy of effort, produces a speech signal to which the native listener can assign the correct words. There are no discrete words in the speech signal itself therefore there is often a linguistic barrier in dealing with the local spoken language.
The creation, development and application of the Dynamic Spanish Speech Corpus (DSSC) facilitated an empirically-based appreciation of speaking speed and prosody as obstacles to intelligibility for learners of Spanish. “Duologues”, natural, relaxed dialogues recorded in such a manner that …
The Construction Of Locative Situations: The Production Of Agency In Locative Media Art Practice, Conor Mcgarrigle
The Construction Of Locative Situations: The Production Of Agency In Locative Media Art Practice, Conor Mcgarrigle
Doctoral
This thesis is a practice led enquiry into Locative Media (LM) which argues that this emergent art practice has played an influential role in the shaping of locative technologies in their progression from new to everyday technologies. The research traces LM to its origins at the Karosta workshops, reviews the stated objectives of early practitioners and the ambitions of early projects, establishing it as a coherent art movement located within established traditions of technological art and of situated art practice. Based on a prescient analysis of the potential for ubiquitous networked location-awareness, LM developed an ambitious program aimed at repositioning …

They Love To Tell The Story: Five Contemporary Novelists Take On The Gospels, Kevin Brown
KSU Press Legacy Project
The Virgin Mary. Joseph. Peter. Mary Magdalene. Judas Iscariot. Pontius Pilate. Jesus. In They Love to Tell the Story: Five Contemporary Novelists Take on the Gospels, Kevin Brown examines how Nikos Kazantzakis, Anthony Burgess, Norman Mailer, Jose Saramago, and Nino Ricci portray each of the major figures from the gospel stories against the backdrop of biblical and legendary lore and depictions by some other contemporary novelists. The result is a many textured tapestry of insight and reflection in which Mary encourages her son to lead a normal life; Peter is coarse and rash, loyal and treacherous; Judas may well …
