English As An International Language: Perspectives From Instructors In A Mainstream English Class, Wutthiphong Laoriandee

PASAA

English as an international language (EIL) has mainly been addressed by non-native world Englishes scholars to non-native English students. Studies on explicit instruction of EIL that emphasizes plurality of the language and culture, and communicative strategies toward different speakers have rarely been conducted in mainstream classes where the majority of the students are native speakers. This preliminary study, inspired by Smith's ( 1983) idea that EIL concepts be taught to everyone, including native speakers, investigates perceptions of instructors at Purdue University, who are mainly English native speakers and teach a course on speech communication (COM 114) to mainly native-speaker students. …

Implementing Blended Learning With Graduate Students Using The Moodle Platform, Prateep Kiratibodee

PASAA

A few years ago, I heard about blended learning and Moodle from a colleague. He talked about its benefits and how the online courses have helped him and his students in their teaching and learning. This talk sparked the idea of using Moodle to help my students learn better. However, with my regular hectic schedule, I kept making excuses to postpone doing what I thought could be beneficial for my students.

Entanglement: Health, Healing And Society In Africa, Haley Noel Jul 2012

Entanglement: Health, Healing And Society In Africa, Haley Noel

Anthós

As a continent, Africa has been explored, exploited, and largely abandoned by the West. During the colonial era of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, foreign powers encountered diverse cultures, superstitions and disease before promptly labeling the entire continent a dangerous and primitive place. For early explorers and colonialists, disease and the threat of ill health is what defined Africa. They overlooked the pre-existing strategies and practices that Africans had adapted to guard against certain diseases, either ignoring them or labeling the misunderstood safety nets as primitive. Also overlooked was the importance of societal organization and communal cooperation among …

Toward A Culture Of Healing: Why Alternative Therapies And A Feminist Framework Are Needed In The Care Of Pregnant Women And Treatment Of Postpartum Mood Disorders, Angela Leonardo Jul 2012

Toward A Culture Of Healing: Why Alternative Therapies And A Feminist Framework Are Needed In The Care Of Pregnant Women And Treatment Of Postpartum Mood Disorders, Angela Leonardo

Anthós

Pregnancy, birth, and early motherhood are areas of human development that have systematically migrated away from their roots as a series of natural life events to a highly, and perhaps unnecessarily, medicalized arena. This shift has been detrimental for women, especially for poor, socially isolated, single, and/or ethnic minority women. In this paper, I outline my concerns with the increased medicalization of birth and postpartum care, as well as with the status of mothers in the United States, and critically examine the patriarchal context in which this shift has occurred. My focus is on maternal health and mortality, including depression …

Imperialistic Incentives, Katherine Jensen Jul 2012

Imperialistic Incentives, Katherine Jensen

Anthós

Within this essay I will summarize author Andrew Wender Cohen’s 2010 article entitled "Smuggling, Globalization, and America’s Outward State, 1870-1909." I will describe the structure of the article as three distinct sections with an introduction and conclusion and complete a deeper analysis of the function of each section on an individual basis. An investigation of the primary and especially secondary sources will help to put Cohen’s article into context as part of a greater discussion between other historical scholars. A closer look into the relevance and fit of the sources/evidence used for Cohen’s article will be complemented by a study …

Jacques Ranciere’S Politics Of Literature, Writing And Aesthetics In The Letters Of John Keats, Darcie Hart Riedner Jul 2012

Jacques Ranciere’S Politics Of Literature, Writing And Aesthetics In The Letters Of John Keats, Darcie Hart Riedner

Anthós

Through his numerous works on the philosophy of aesthetics, literature and writing Jacques Rancière has crafted a body of work based on the premise of equality as recognized through aesthetics. In the introduction to the English translation of Rancière’s The Politics of Aesthetics, author Gabriel Rockhill writes Rancière supports abolishing "any presupposed inequalities of intelligence". Rancière argues against any "privileged position usurped by philosophy in its various attempts to speak for others, be it the proletariat, the poor, or anyone else who is not 'destined to think'" Rancière's political positioning of aesthetics finds "those who have no name, who remain …

Palindromic Structure In The "Pardoner's Tale", Sister Lucia Treanor Jul 2012

Palindromic Structure In The "Pardoner's Tale", Sister Lucia Treanor

Peer Reviewed Articles

This paper explains the medieval writing process known as palindromic structure, a face of anagogy that, as far as we can determine, has largely been ignored in literary criticism. It begins by examining the "little verses" of Augustine of Dacia that were a staple of schoolboy studies, and demonstrates how the verses were used to teach the creative process to students of Latin composition. Then, after introducing Mary Douglas's criteria for identifying the structure, it sets forth Chaucer's ''Pardoner's Tale" as a well-balanced palindrome, arguing for authorial intentionality by referencing a section of the "Parson's Tale." It offers John Dryden's …

Valuing The Goodness Of Earth, Jame Schaefer

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

Though John Chrysostom, Augustine, and Thomas Aquinas, when reflecting on the creation story, valued all types of creatures, living and non-living, intrinsically for their unique goodness and instrumentally for the sustenance they provide to others, they valued most highly their complex interrelation in the physical world.

In recent years, following the boom of the cultural policies at the international level, Thailand has turned to place its emphasis on the idea of "cultural and creative industries" at the academic and policy-making level especially in its art and design institutions. Academic disciplines in arts management, information and technology, communication arts, media studies, and economics are developing into the world where they can be blended together into multiple levels of knowledge management. The policy development, and implementation plans are assimilating these industries into its national platforms, integrating culture and economics together. Theatre For Development - A Tanzanian Road Towards Citizenship And Cultural Renewal, Hilde Kvam Jul 2012

Theatre For Development - A Tanzanian Road Towards Citizenship And Cultural Renewal, Hilde Kvam

Journal of Urban Culture Research

During the 60s, Theatre for Development was introduced into several states in Africa. The focus at that time was to utilize theatre as a tool of communication in development projects. During the 80s Tanzania developed their own variant of this genre through the initiative of the University of Dar es Salaam's Department of Fine and Performing Arts offering lectures on Theatre for Development. They wanted to develop a supportive theatre and theatrical methods to improve the conditions in their communities. Self-determination and participation for the townspeople in the local conflict resolution process was the department's keywords. The basic idea was …

The following paper is drawn from a larger research project undertaken during2008-2009, in which I closely examined the immigrant music community in St. John's Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. To this end, I interviewed overtwenty-five people, most of them immigrant musicians, and in some cases viewedperformances and rehearsals, created jam sessions, and participated in variousmusic-making activities over an eight-month period. Here, I will present portraitsof some of my consultants from that time, whose negotiations in their musicmakingactivities demonstrate the diverse ways they see themselves in the Canadianmulticultural milieu and the issues faced in relocation. I will highlight someof their experiences that …

Through this comparison, I explore the significance of using a traditionalperforming art, the Javanese Gamelan in a case where it is a local tradition andone where it is not. In present day Javanese society, due to the effects …

A Comparison Of The Kenotic Trinitarian Theology Of Hans Urs Von Balthasar And Sergei Bulgakov, Katy Leamy Jul 2012

A Comparison Of The Kenotic Trinitarian Theology Of Hans Urs Von Balthasar And Sergei Bulgakov, Katy Leamy

Dissertations (1934 -)

Vital to Balthasar’s own articulation of the dogmas of the Incarnation and the Trinity is the kenotic Trinitarian theology of Sergei Bulgakov. The ways in which Balthasar both incorporates and modifies Bulgakov's Trinitarian theology provide an insight into his overarching theological agenda. My dissertation argues that Sergei Bulgakov, a 20th century Russian Orthodox theologian, is an important resource for Balthasar, directly and indirectly influencing key doctrinal points as well as the overall shape and direction of his theological project. This dissertation explores how Balthasar employs and adapts the thought of Sergei Bulgakov, with the Trinitarian theology of Thomas Aquinas to …

Doing Science Within A Culture Of Machismo And Marianismo, Karen Englander, Carmen Yáñez, Xochitl Barney Jul 2012

Doing Science Within A Culture Of Machismo And Marianismo, Karen Englander, Carmen Yáñez, Xochitl Barney

Journal of International Women's Studies

Women have been joining the ranks of professional scientists in increasing numbers although international statistics indicate that women‘s participation varies substantially in different regions. Variation in rates of participation can be explained in part by cultural contexts, and in Mexico, dominant cultural ideologies of machismo and marianismo prevail. To understand the impact, if any, of these ideologies on the lives of women scientists in their professional interactions, a case study was conducted at one research institute. The results indicate that the women scientists report different interactions with men and with other women, and interactions vary with the status of the …

Occupational Health And Safety In Small Scale Mining: Focus On Women Workers In The Philippines, Jinky Leilanie Lu

Journal of International Women's Studies

This study highlights women’s participation in small scale mining, and their occupational safety and health conditions. Small scale mining is a significant source of income in many developing countries such as the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Bolivia, Colombia, Indonesia, Mali, and Zimbabwe. In the Philippines, small-scale mining has been the leading occupational group among all mineral industries. However, data show that women face many issues in mining such as double burden of work-home responsibilities, chemical exposure to either cyanide or mercury used in extracting gold, dust from manganese and other minerals, and respiratory and systemic diseases from toxic chemical exposures. …

Why George Eliot Was Not A Political Activist, June Skye Szirotny Jul 2012

Why George Eliot Was Not A Political Activist, June Skye Szirotny

Journal of International Women's Studies

It is often thought that George Eliot’s refusal to campaign actively for feminist goals indicates that she was no feminist. But there were several reasons that make the charge mute. She disliked dealing with practical matters, especially legislative ones. Proselytizing was particularly repugnant to her because she knew that her scandalous liaison with Lewes could only make her discussion of controversial matters a liability. Furthermore, she thought that the factors facilitating success were so complicated that one could say little that would be helpful to the aspiring woman. Actually, she thought of herself as an activist, “teaching the world through …
