The Ethics Of Vaginal Birth After Cesarean, Sonya Charles Jul 2012

The Ethics Of Vaginal Birth After Cesarean, Sonya Charles

Philosophy and Religious Studies Department Faculty Publications

The decline in providers and facilities that will allow a trial of labor after cesarean forces many women to choose a repeat cesarean. The choice is frequently not much of a choice, however, since the full range of options are often not on the table. This limited 'choice' violates obstetricians' obligations both to respect patients' autonomy and to offer them good care. There has been a vigorous but so far not very fruitful debate in the last few years about the lack of access to a trial of labor after cesarean. Some recently released documents express concern about the limited …

An Author And A Bookshop: Publishing Marlowe’S Remains At The Black Bear, Andras Kisery

Publications and Research

Bookshops and the spaces occupied by the early modern book trade have received attention as social environments. This study of the early publication history of Christopher Marlowe's poems -- Hero and Leander, his translation of Lucan, as well as the lyric now known as "The Passionate Shepherd to his Love" -- shows that, the bookshops may also turn out to be agents shaping the fate of books, authors, and literary afterlives. Shifting our emphasis from the individual bookseller to the networks of a plurality of human agents and environments allows us to consider the intersections of various commercial and …

The Dorothy And Herbert Vogel Collection: Fifty Works For Rhode Island, Alison W. Chang Jul 2012

The Dorothy And Herbert Vogel Collection: Fifty Works For Rhode Island, Alison W. Chang

Journals

Exhibition Notes, Number 41, Summer 2012. RISD Museum was the recipient of fifty contemporary works from the celebrated collectors Dorothy and Herb Vogel. Both worked as civil servants throughout their lives so they never had extraordinary means with which to build a collection, but acquired more than 4000 works since their marriage in 1962. Their commitment to minimal and conceptual art is well-known, but their taste was much broader and included work rooted in Abstract Expressionism as well as figurative compositions. Most of the collection was given to the National Gallery of Art. The gift to Rhode Island is part …

Quilting: An Examination Of Harriet Powers And Elizabeth Hobbs Keckley, Jennifer J. Moreland Jul 2012

Quilting: An Examination Of Harriet Powers And Elizabeth Hobbs Keckley, Jennifer J. Moreland

Art & Art History ETDs

African American quilting exhibits a long and rich history in antebellum and post-bellum America. Although hindered by their social status as slaves, African Americans were adroit artisans adept at producing exceptional quilts for personal use as well as for the plantation household. In the few surviving examples, slave quilts demonstrate a range of geometric improvisation, decorative patterning, and asymmetrical ornamentation. African American quilts are unique in their ability to articulate personal histories and narratives, religious ideologies, and communicate messages through color, pattern, and emblematic imagery. A close investigation of African and Euro-American design aesthetics is crucial to understanding the hybrid …

Three Rivers As Transitional Zone: Considering A Collective Metanarrative In Pueblo Prehistory, Heather Kline Jul 2012

Three Rivers As Transitional Zone: Considering A Collective Metanarrative In Pueblo Prehistory, Heather Kline

Art & Art History ETDs

The Three Rivers petroglyph site in what is presently south central New Mexico represents important concepts for the study of southwestern prehistory. This site has been studied to a limited degree from the perspective of archaeological site surveys that have categorically classified the motifs represented on the petroglyphs, but at this point very little is known about the cultures that lived and created art in the Three Rivers area. The iconography of these images is remarkably similar to that represented on ceramics at both Mimbres during the Classic period (ca. AD 1000-1150), as well as Casas Grandes during the Medio …

Between Theory And Reality: Cosmopolitanism Of Nodal Cities In Paweł Huelle’S Castorp, Ania Spyra

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

FIVE YEARS BEFORE the publication of his novel Castorp, the Gdansk writer Pawel Huelle published a short piece of the same title in the essay collection Inne historie (1999), the title of which-translated as either "other stories" or "other histories"-consciously plays with the difficulty of writing a history of Gdansk, a theme to which almost all of the short pieces in this collection somehow return. The essay tells the story of a literary correspondence between a Lvov pastor and the writer Thomas Mann, in which Mann voices regret over some unelaborated ideas and abandoned storylines in The Magic Mountain. …

Matthew Henson And The Antinomies Of Racial Uplift, Anthony S. Foy Jul 2012

Matthew Henson And The Antinomies Of Racial Uplift, Anthony S. Foy

English Literature Faculty Works

Matthew Henson's 1912 memoir, A Negro Explorer at the North Pole, seems to adopt a vindicationist discourse of work, merit, and recognition that accords with Booker T. Washington's vision for racial progress, but Henson's narrative actually demonstrates how such a discourse inadequately resolves the complex tangle of race, masculinity, and citizenship during the Jim Crow era.

In What Ways Does Research-Based Gender-Specific Youth Programming Affect Girls’ Development Post-Program?, Alaina Ennamorati

Capstone Collection

Current girls’ development research in the United States shows that female adolescents are experiencing an increase in depression rates, eating disorders, and lower self-esteem. Many feminists believe the societal culture in which girls are growing up in is hazardous, with the acceptance and perpetuation of oversexualization, objectification, and stereotyping by all different types of media. The following capstone research takes a case study real world flexible design approach at the high school leadership program at Hardy Girls Healthy Women (HGHW), a nonprofit in Waterville, Maine that works to create a world where women and girls feel equality, independence and safety. …

Paul's Witness To Biblical Monotheism As Isaiah's Servant In Acts, William Kurz Jul 2012

Paul's Witness To Biblical Monotheism As Isaiah's Servant In Acts, William Kurz

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

The influence of the book of Isaiah on Luke and Acts has been widely discussed and generally admitted.' It has also become a consensus that Luke used the Septuagint (LXX) Isaiah rather than pre-Masoretic Hebrew texts. The Greek translations of Luke's time had already applied and modified the theology of Hebrew Isaiah in usually small but sometimes significant ways.' It is also important to realize that the Lukan author was not aware that the especially influential section, "Second Isaiah;' was a separate writing by a later author. Rather, Luke read the canonical Isaiah as a unified biblical book.
